Tomato variety Sunrise - characteristics and growing regions
Amateur tomato growers are always in search of new varieties with better characteristics. And more and more often they give preference to hybrid varieties rather than varietal tomatoes. After all, it is hybrids that are able to show the best qualities of their parent varieties, while being many times superior to them. One such successful hybrid is the Sunrise F1 tomato. Its applicants are Dutch breeders, whose work has long been appreciated by domestic gardeners. Tomato Sunrise is even included in the State Register. This happened not so long ago - in 2007.
Dutch breeders are great masters in creating varietal and hybrid tomatoes
Varietal characteristics

The hybrid bush is compact and belongs to the determinant species. Its height in open ground is on average 55 cm. In a greenhouse it can grow up to 70 cm. At the beginning of growth, the set of green mass is active, but in general, the plant can be called medium-leaved. The leaf is medium in size, color from light green to green. The inflorescence is intermediate. The peduncle has an articulation. One fruit cluster consists of 3 – 5 fruits.
Sunrise tomato fruits are very attractive in appearance. Tomatoes have a flat-round shape and pronounced ribbing. The unripe fruit is green, the ripe fruit is bright red. The consistency of the pulp is dense, fleshy and juicy. The number of nests is more than 4. The taste is very good, with sourness. The fruits are quite large - on average from 160 to 180 g. But specimens weighing 200 grams or more are often found.
Thanks to the dense and fleshy pulp, Sunrise tomato fruits keep their shape perfectly
Description of the Sunrise tomato variety
Sunrise is a determinate tomato variety that was bred in Holland for planting in open ground and greenhouse cultivation. This variety is used by farmers all over the world because tomatoes easily adapt to any climate. The maximum height is 70 cm. The variety requires regular pinching, because many leaves grow, which take energy from the plant. When 4–5 branches grow for fruit, the growth of the bush stops.

For reference: determinant means “limited.” That is, the variety that grows to a certain point and stops growing (low and medium). Indeterminate varieties are those that can grow indefinitely (tall varieties).
Cultivation regions
Sunrise is considered a successful hybrid in terms of the fact that it adapts well to any region. It is popular in Russia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine. Where the climate is cold, tomatoes are planted in greenhouses.
Productivity
Sunrise is an early ripening tomato variety. The first harvest can be harvested 60 days after planting the crop in the ground. On 1 bush, up to 5 clusters grow, each of which produces 4–6 fruits, provided that the crop is properly cared for. They are quite large - 150 grams on average for 1 tomato.
Due to the long fruiting period, you can harvest about 2 kg of tomatoes per season from 1 bush. Approximately 4 bushes per 1 square meter are planted in the ground. m., due to which you can get about 8–10 kg from it.
Area of application of fruits
Tomatoes are widely used in cooking. Sunrises are meaty and juicy enough, due to which they can be salted, canned, and made into salads. When fresh, the vegetable is very tasty, with a rich tomato aroma.
Tomato juice is not made from this variety because the tomatoes are meatier. Ideal for adjika, borscht dressings and ketchup. Due to their aroma, the fruits can be dried in an oven or electric dryer and used to make dry seasonings for various culinary masterpieces.
Resistance to diseases and pests
The Sunrise tomato has strong immunity to fungal diseases. There is little chance that it will develop spotting, plaque or root rot. However, tomatoes are not protected from attack by insects and other plant diseases, therefore, at all stages of growth and development, it is necessary to carry out prevention, and when planting, disinfect the soil and rhizomes.
Features of the Sunrise tomato, its advantages and disadvantages, comparison with other varieties
A special feature of the Sunrise variety is that it is equally suitable for growing in open and closed ground. The hybrid is also successfully used for year-round cultivation in suitable greenhouses. In a greenhouse atmosphere, the variety copes well with high humidity and lack of lighting.
In addition, Sunrise can be stored for long-term storage. Thanks to this quality, the variety is popular with farmers and can often be found on supermarket shelves and at the market.
Good keeping quality and ability to withstand transportation make Sunrise a popular variety among farmers

Description and characteristics of Sunrise F1 tomatoes, reviews, photos
An early-ripening, determinate, productive, large-fruited tomato hybrid of Dutch selection. Recommended for growing in open ground and film shelters. The period from germination to the beginning of ripening is 85-100 days.
The height of the bush is about 50 cm; it requires tying to a support and pinching up to the first flower cluster.
Basic qualities of fruits
Sunrise tomatoes are flat-round, dense, red in color at maturity, weighing 180-240 grams, good (for hybrids) taste. These tomatoes are suitable for fresh salads, pickling, making juices and sauces.
The hybrid is resistant to Alternaria stem cancer, gray leaf spot, and Verticillium wilt.
Productivity - up to 4.5 kg of fruits per plant (with proper agricultural technology, watering and fertilizing).
Originator : Monsanto (Holland).
Features of cultivation
Since the Sunrise hybrid is grown with equal success in open ground and in protected ground, the following planting methods are practiced: sowing seeds and planting seedlings.
Seed preparation is carried out in the usual way. Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in March. Seeds germinate at a temperature of 25°C. In the phase of 2 true leaves, the seedlings dive. Hardened seedlings are planted in protected or open ground at the age of 35–45 days.
The seedling method is most suitable for cool regions. But in areas where spring comes early and the soil quickly warms up to the 12–14°C required for planting, this method also enjoys well-deserved respect. Thanks to grown seedlings, gardeners have the opportunity to get a harvest earlier than by sowing a variety with seeds.
The seedling method of growing Sunrise tomatoes is suitable for any region
Since the Sunrise tomato has fairly compact bushes, the distance between seedlings in the garden bed can be left up to 40 cm. Row spacing also does not differ in width - 50 cm is quite enough.
Such a dense planting scheme is very helpful for owners of small plots, allowing them to plant more plants per 1 m².
The seed method, although not as successful as the seedling method, is also suitable for growing this variety. It is used only in the southern regions. The sowing time for seed material falls at the end of April - beginning of May. To create comfortable conditions for seeds to germinate, a shelter is installed above the bed.
Seeds are sown thickly on the garden bed so that later they can be thinned, leaving the strongest seedlings for further cultivation.
Growing technology
All procedures are similar to planting and caring for other varieties of tomatoes. It is important to water on time, feed with mineral fertilizers, and tie up bushes if necessary.
We grow seedlings
- Seed material is planted in pre-prepared boxes 50 - 55 days before planting in open soil.
- You can prepare a nutritious soil mixture yourself: mix 8 parts of peat, 2 shares of turf soil and 1 share of sawdust. The soil will be loose and light. Moisture will pass through perfectly, and oxygen in the right amount will penetrate to the root system.
- Make a furrow 1 - 1.5 cm deep in the soil where you place the seeds. Sprinkle a small amount of soil on top. Moisten the soil with a spray bottle.
- Next, the containers are covered with polyethylene or a piece of glass to create greenhouse conditions with the desired level of humidity. Periodically, the cover is removed to ventilate the planted plants. It is also necessary to regularly moisten the soil. Place the containers in a dark and warm place.
- When shoots appear, the shelter is removed and the container is moved to a windowsill or to a lighted place.
- After 2-3 independent leaves appear, plant the tomatoes in different containers. Peat pots or plastic cups with a diameter of 10 cm are suitable.
- When the seedlings grow, you need to harden them: take them outside on dry and windless days. Gradually, the time spent in the fresh air needs to be increased.
Planting in open ground
Seedlings of this variety should be transplanted to a previously prepared and fertilized area. In regions with a temperate climate, it is better to plant in the third ten days of May, when the soil has warmed up well and the residual night frosts have finally disappeared.
- Planting pattern: since the plants are compact, the gaps between seedlings should be 40 x 50 cm. This is enough for the tomatoes to develop and grow well.
- At night, it is better to organize a shelter to be on the safe side. Then the seedlings will better take root and adapt to the new place.
Tips for growing in a greenhouse
- If you plan to plant in a greenhouse, then it can be done in the second half of April. During the growing season, it is important to apply fertilizers at least 2 - 3 times.
- Pay special attention to calcium (so that the inflorescences do not fall off and black spots do not appear on the leaf blades); humus is also added. For tomatoes, the presence of boron, magnesium, nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil is important. If the soil is poor, it is necessary to add fertilizer before planting.
- In a greenhouse, the soil must be changed at least once every 5 years to protect the plants from contamination by viruses and infections.
- Every year after the end of the season, it is necessary to treat the soil with the following solution: Bordeaux mixture (1%), copper sulfate solution (1%), as well as liming the soil with dolomite flour at the rate of 50 g per 1 m2.
- To have more nitrogen in the soil, you can plant legumes between the rows of tomatoes. If you need to improve the taste of tomatoes, which will not be superfluous when growing hybrids, plant basil next to the bushes.
- To nourish this variety of tomatoes and increase the green mass, prepare the following infusion: per bucket of water you will need 1 kg of chopped greens and 1 glass of ash. Let it brew for 7 - 10 days. Then dilute it with water (1:2) and water it at the root of each bush.
Features of care
The procedure for caring for the Sunrise hybrid is, in general, standard. The beds should be kept clean by carrying out timely weeding and loosening after watering. But there are some nuances, without which the taste of the fruit and its yield may not reach its standard.
- Watering. The planted seedlings are watered as usual, allowing the plant to quickly adapt and begin to form a crop. But then, when the fruits are in the ripening stage, the frequency of watering is reduced to 1 time in 10 days in hot weather. If the weather is cloudy, then water even less often. This watering regime will allow more sugars to accumulate in the Sunrise tomato fruits, so that the sourness present in the taste does not become dominant.
- Shaping and garter. During the growth period of the Sunrise tomato, pinching is required. Despite the short stature of the bush, during the ripening of the fruit clusters they should be tied up, since heavy fruits can cause a break in the fragile branch.
- Fertilizers. Potassium nitrate and phosphorus-containing compounds are most often used as the main fertilizer. Most of them are introduced during the period of fruit formation.
To prevent the soil under the Sunrise tomato bush from becoming waterlogged, try to use a drip irrigation system
Features of planting and care
One of the main and important features of Sunrise f1 tomatoes is increased resistance to diseases and mechanical damage. These qualities provide an excellent opportunity to facilitate the processes of growing and caring for crops.
It is worth noting that tomato bushes that have stopped growing do not need special care. The main rule in successfully growing the Sunrise f1 variety is to pay attention to the choice of seed and properly care for the seedlings.
How to prepare seeds
Preparing Sunrise f1 tomato seeds for planting is carried out in several stages:
- Warming up. Sunrise f1 tomato grains are well heated in the oven or oven for about 10 hours to a temperature of 45 degrees.
- Soak. The seed is disinfected by soaking in salt water. After half an hour of treatment, the seeds are washed with water and dried.
- Second disinfection in potassium permanganate. The seeds are kept in potassium permanganate for no more than 15-20 minutes.
- Soaking the seed in a pre-purchased growth stimulator.
If each stage of seed preparation is carried out correctly, you can rid the plant of future pests and diseases, as well as accelerate the growth of the crop.
It is worth taking into account that it is recommended to plant seeds in the soil two months before the date of planting the seedlings in a greenhouse or under the open sky.
Planting seeds
By following the correct algorithm for planting tomato seed of the Sunrise f1 variety, you can get a bountiful harvest.
Seed planting process:
- Place a small layer of expanded clay in specialized containers with holes for drainage.
- Pour the soil mixture (turf soil, sawdust, peat) preheated in the oven or over a fire into the box and tamp it down well.
- Make small depressions up to 1.5 cm in the ground. Pour grains into the holes, sprinkled with a small layer of soil.
- After planting the seeds, spray.
- Cover containers with planted grains with cling film or other transparent material. Leave in a warm place until shoots appear.
- As soon as the seeds hatch, remove the film from the box and place it in a well-lit place - a windowsill.
- After the first pair of leaves appear, the seedlings must be planted in other containers. The diameter of one pot is at least 10 cm.
- You can transplant seedlings to a permanent place in late May - early June. If the Sunrise f1 tomato is planned to be grown in greenhouse conditions, then planting can be done much earlier - at the end of April.
- When planting in the soil, seedlings are placed quite distantly. The minimum distance between bushes should be 50 cm.
- At the first stages of bush growth, unadapted tomatoes should be covered with cling film. As soon as the tomatoes take root, the shelter can be removed.
Important! Do not forget about regular fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers.
During the growth period, the crop needs at least two, or even three useful supplements.

Possible diseases and pests, how to resist them
The best protection against diseases and pests is compliance with agricultural practices and preventive treatment. Therefore, it is this stage of care that should be given more attention, because, despite the strong immunity of the Sunrise tomato, anything can happen.
It’s probably worth starting with pests, since they most often threaten tomato beds. The most dangerous for a hybrid are:

For the purpose of prevention, you can use folk remedies:
- infusion of onion peels - fill a liter jar with dry onion peels and fill with hot (40 - 50°C) water. Leave for 2 days, strain, add a little soap shavings. Before use, dilute by half with water;
- wormwood infusion - 1 kg of chopped fresh herb or 100 g of dried herb, pour 10 liters of water, preferably rainwater, but you can just use well-settled tap water. Keep the container in a warm place for 10 days, stirring the fermenting solution every day. Then filter the infusion. Before use, mix 1 part of wormwood infusion with 9 parts of water.
If pests have already been noticed in the tomato beds, then it is best to use chemicals:
- Aktaroy;
- Confidor;
- Prestige;
- Karbofos.
Many drugs can be used to control pests, for example, Confidor
Of the diseases, the Sunrise tomato is most threatened by late blight, which loves damp and cold weather. The fungus can infect all above-ground parts of the plant - leaves, stems and fruits. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, diseased bushes must be dug out from the garden beds and destroyed. The following drugs have proven themselves to be the best for fighting fungus:
- Fitosporin;
- Gamair;
- Quadris;
- Fundazol;
- Ridoml Gold.
As a preventive measure, treatment is carried out with a light pink manganese solution, whey diluted with water 1:1 or a solution of copper sulfate - 2 tbsp. l. substances per 10 liters of water.
It is easier to prevent late blight on tomatoes with proper agricultural practices than to fight it by losing the harvest.
