Tomato Pink Spam: reviews, photos, yield, characteristics and description of the variety, advantages and disadvantages

Description and characteristics of the variety

This hybrid variety was bred using the Bull's Heart tomato. The result was fruits of large size, the same color and other similar properties. The hybrid was created by Russian breeders, registered and entered into the State Register of the Russian Federation under the name Pink Spam tomato F1 . The variety is intended for cultivation in simple greenhouses and greenhouses.

  • The plant belongs to the indeterminate type and requires timely pruning and a good support system. Such bushes do not stop growing throughout the summer season. They can grow up to 2 meters or more in height if left unchecked.

Important! The top of the plant at the desired height must be pinched so that it stops its growth. In this case, it is necessary to trim unnecessary shoots.

  • The variety is early ripening: its fruits begin to ripen 95 - 100 days after emergence.
  • Since Pink Spam tomatoes are hybrid varieties, they are best grown in greenhouse conditions. However, in southern regions with a milder climate, tomatoes are planted in open ground.
  • The plant is resistant to most nightshade diseases: cladosporiosis, tomato mosaic, verticellosis and other fungal diseases. Weakly resists late blight virus.
  • The variety of Russian selection tolerates sudden weather changes well.
  • Usually the bush is formed into 1 stem, removing all the stepsons.
  • The leaves of the plant are small, green, and the inflorescence is simple.
  • In order to get good tomato yields, you should follow all agrotechnical procedures. Productivity is high. On average from 1 sq. m. up to 20–25 kg of ripe fruits are collected. With good care, one bush can produce almost 12 kg of delicious tomatoes.
  • The formation of ovaries occurs amicably. The variety bears fruit from mid-June until the onset of cold weather. This tomato productivity is much higher than most other varieties.

Care

Further care for the Pink Spam tomato includes performing a number of actions:

  1. Watering. It is recommended to carry out it in a timely manner, twice a week, in the morning or evening, after sunset. It is necessary to water only at the roots.
  2. Mulching. Covering the soil with natural organic or man-made inorganic materials will retain moisture in the soil.
  3. Loosening, weeding. High-quality loosening and removal of weeds will ensure access of oxygen to the root system of the plant.
  4. Hilling. The procedure will allow the roots to branch intensively.
  5. Feeding. 2 weeks after planting the seedlings in the ground, when the seedlings begin to grow, they must be fed once a month with mineral fertilizers and natural organic matter, for example, potassium salt, superphosphate, onion peels, nettles, and infusion of chicken manure. The best time to feed is during watering or immediately after it.
  6. Topping. To limit the growth of the bush at the main shoot, you need to pinch the top at the desired height.
  7. Bush formation, garter. The bush is formed into 2 stems, using a stepson under the lower ovary. The garter is necessary to support the weight of the tomatoes.
  8. Treatment against pests and diseases. To prevent fungal diseases, seedlings and the soil underneath them are sprayed with a fungicide solution 7 days after planting. During the period of growth and formation of fruits, treatment with chemicals is stopped, once a week a solution of Fitosporin is added to the water for irrigation, and the bushes are sprayed with it. To protect against pests, the hybrid is treated with preparations containing copper.

Plant immunity can be strengthened with growth stimulants. It is necessary to ensure that the soil does not become waterlogged, to prevent the tomatoes from thickening, and to ventilate the greenhouse premises in a timely manner.

Fruit characteristics

  • The fruit contains a large amount of useful substances and various vitamins.
  • The fruits have several chambers containing a small number of seeds.
  • The skin is thin and the flesh is fleshy, but not entirely dense.
  • The fruit tastes sweet, with a pleasant tomato aroma.
  • Tomatoes are pink in color.
  • On one bush there are heart-shaped fruits and, less often, round ones.
  • The weight of one tomato varies from 160 to 300 g.
  • You can transport tomatoes over long distances only immediately after picking them. When stored for a long time, tomatoes lose their presentation.

Agricultural technology

This variety is best grown in seedlings. In order for the plants to be strong and strong, care must begin from the very first days.

Sowing seeds

Seeds are planted in prepared soil approximately 30 days before the seedlings are planted in a permanent place. Depending on the region, this may occur in late March or early April. Before planting, the seeds are treated:

  • first kept in a solution of potassium permanganate;
  • then washed;
  • for 45-60 minutes they are placed in a product that enhances resistance;
  • dried.

The land for sowing must be of high quality. You can buy it or prepare it yourself. To do this, you need to take the soil where the bush will subsequently grow. Mix it with peat, sand and ash. If necessary, the soil can be disinfected with potassium permanganate.

The seeds are placed on the surface of the soil and lightly sprinkled with soil in a 1 cm layer. After this, water. It is best to use a sprayer to prevent the soil from being washed away. Then the container with the seeds is covered with glass or film and placed in a warm, bright place.

Seedling care

After the seeds hatch, the containers are opened and placed in a warm, bright place, but so that direct rays of the sun do not fall on them. The most optimal temperature for growing seedlings is 23 degrees. The soil under the seedlings needs to be moistened regularly, but so that the moisture does not stagnate.

Seedlings are picked when the first two true leaves grow.

If the seedlings are planted in ordinary containers, then they should be replanted with lumps of soil so as not to break the roots. In addition, this will allow plants to quickly adapt to a new place.

2 weeks before planting the seedlings in the greenhouse, the plants need to begin to be hardened off. This is done by exposing them to the air. At first, the time the seedlings are exposed to air should be only a few minutes. Gradually the duration increases to the entire daylight hours. And if there is no frost, the plants can be left outside all night.

Plants are planted in a permanent location at the age of 2 months, when the bushes are sufficiently strong. This occurs around mid-to-late May, depending on the timing of seed sowing and the region.

Planting in a greenhouse and care

The soil in the greenhouse must be prepared. Beginning in the fall, the beds need to be manured and dug up. In the spring they also dig up. Loamy and sandy soils are considered the most suitable for the Pink Spam variety.

When planting, supports for tying are immediately installed. The plant can reach a height of 1.5 meters, and therefore it needs additional support. Plant care consists of:

  • timely watering;
  • mulching the soil;
  • weeding;
  • loosening the soil;
  • stepsoning. Only 1 stem is enough for growth;
  • preventive measures against diseases with preparations containing copper;
  • feeding with mineral complexes. During the growth period there should be at least 4 of them.

Harvesting

3 months after planting, you will already be able to collect the first fruits of your labor. It is better to pick tomatoes in the evening, when the sun is no longer burning, so as not to injure the bush. The fruits must be picked as they ripen, since already ripened tomatoes take away nutrients from their green counterparts. We must remember that “Pink Spam f1” is a tomato suitable for transportation, but due to its characteristics it is not suitable for long-term storage. Therefore, after harvesting, it should be eaten or prepared as quickly as possible.

A relatively new, but already popular variety, “Pink Spam,” deserves to take its rightful place in your garden bed. Tomatoes grown by yourself are definitely healthier and tastier than store-bought ones, and for your care and proper care they will reward you with a rich harvest and bring many benefits to the body.

The advantages of the variety include the following:

  • Bushes of this variety bring high yields.
  • The ovaries are formed almost at the same time.
  • The fruits do not crack.
  • Great tomato taste.
  • Wide composition of nutrients.

Flaws:

  • Pink Spam tomatoes require more careful care than other varieties.
  • Ripe tomatoes cannot be stored for a long time.
  • Tomatoes are not resistant to some diseases.

How to care for tomatoes

Stage 1. PlantingStep 1. The recommended planting period for this variety is early or mid-May.
Plant in open ground in the second half of May. Pre-fertilize and dig up the soil. Step 2. Plant according to the 60x70 cm pattern, since the bushes are demanding on lighting
Stage 2. WateringStep 1. Leave the water to stand for 24 hours before use.
Step 2: Water in the evening after sunset. For 1 plant – 5-7 liters of water
Stage 3. Feeding Step 1. Maintain the frequency of feeding - once every 3 weeks.
Step 2. For best results, alternate between mineral and organic formulations.
Stage 4. Loosening and weeding Step 1. Loosen the surface around the stems after each watering.
In open ground, loosen even after rains. Step 2: Remove weeds every 1-2 weeks while they are still small
Stage 5. Tying Option 1. A peg is driven in near each bush, and the tomato trunk is tied to it in 2-3 places.
Option 2. The crossbar is fixed above the plants. Pieces of twine are attached to it and wrapped around the tomatoes.
Step 6. Harvest on time Step 1. Remove ripe fruits so that they do not take nutrients from the plant.
Step 2. Be sure to remove all rotten and spoiled tomatoes.

Features of cultivation

The development and yields of Pink Spam depend on the growing and care conditions. In order for the variety to bring as much harvest as possible, each bush should be given special attention. Tomatoes are usually grown using seedlings. To obtain high-quality seedlings, some procedures are carried out with seeds before planting.

First, the seeds are left in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes. After this, they are thoroughly washed in plenty of clean water. The next stage of preparing seeds for sowing is treating them with the growth stimulator Zircon.

You can prepare stimulants yourself. To do this, dilute 1 teaspoon of honey in 1 glass of water and let it brew for 40-60 minutes. After processing, the seeds are laid out on paper or cotton cloth to dry. All manipulations are completed, and the seeds can be planted.

Before sowing, you need to prepare the soil. It can be purchased ready-made in specialized stores or taken from the site where the seedlings will be planted. To independently prepare the substrate, take soil from the site, peat, sand (1: 1: 1).

If the soil is highly acidic, then you need to add more wood ash. It is recommended to disinfect the finished mixture using potassium permanganate. In addition, the composition of the soil must be loose.

To make it convenient to sow seeds in the ground, you can use a manual seeder or any suitable device available in the house. A distance of 2 cm is maintained between the holes, and rows are placed every 4 cm. The seeds are buried no more than 2 cm and carefully sprinkled with earth.

After this, the wells are moistened with water using a spray bottle. The crops are immediately covered with plastic film (or glass) and placed in a warm place. At the same time, the trays should not be in a draft.

When young shoots appear, the film must be removed. The air temperature in the room where the trays with seedlings are located must be maintained within +23 °C. After the formation of two good leaves, the seedlings should be planted in separate cups.

For seedlings, you need to choose a place where there is enough light, but beware of direct rays of the sun aimed directly at them. The best place to grow seedlings is a windowsill on the east or west side. In other cases, the plant should be provided with shelter from the hot sun.

Pickled sprouts are watered as needed. Typically, watering seedlings is carried out 3 times every 7 days at the root. To form a healthy and strong plant, nutrients should be added in a timely manner.

10 days after the diving procedure, the first fertilizing is applied in the form of nitrogen fertilizer. Usually, such a common remedy as nitroammophoska is used for this purpose. The second feeding of seedlings is carried out after 14 days. The third feeding with vitamins is carried out 2 weeks before transplanting the tomatoes to a permanent place.

At the same time, the plant begins to harden. During the day, trays with seedlings are taken out into the fresh air (terrace, balcony) and kept for 30 minutes, increasing the time they spend outside every day. Thus, the shoots are accustomed to the warm sun.

When Pink Spam tomatoes grow to a height of 20 cm, they are transplanted into open ground. Depending on the climate of the region, this procedure can be carried out from the second ten days of May to mid-June. Seedlings can be transferred to a sheltered area or greenhouse 10 days earlier. If the weather has not yet settled and there may be frosts, then young plants are planted in several passes.

Tomatoes are not planted in areas where eggplants, potatoes, and peppers grew last season, as there is a risk of infection with their diseases.

A plot where cabbage, onions and zucchini were grown is suitable.

Seedlings are planted according to the following scheme: 50x50 cm. If the plot is spacious, then a planting scheme of 70x70 cm is better suited for the Pink Spam variety.

Reviews, who planted

Angelina, Stavropol region

I have been growing Pink Spam for three years. Tomatoes have a sweetish taste, which makes dishes made from them especially tasty. When growing, the main thing to remember is to place supports and timely tie up the bushes so that they do not break from the weight of the tomatoes. It is worth noting that very large fruits are obtained from the first ovaries, and slightly smaller ones from the upper ones.

Vitaly, Ryazan region

Pink Spam is very similar to Oxheart, the fruits are large in size. The variety is grown in my heated greenhouse, and here the bushes have grown up to two meters, fortunately I took care of the garter in a timely manner. The Pink Spam harvest is ideal for both fresh consumption and pickling.

Lyudmila, Lipetsk region

This wonderful variety has been grown on my plot for two years now. This time, I decided to plant Orange Spam to compare the characteristics of both varieties. A wonderful harvest was obtained from both tomatoes. I highly recommend these hybrids for growing.

As a conclusion, we can say the following: Pink Spam is deservedly popular among a large number of gardeners. If all agrotechnical recommendations are followed, people receive a harvest in large quantities.
