Placement and dimensions
The first and logical parameter for the usefulness of a scarecrow is its correct placement on the site. It should be located directly in the protected area or on its border. In large areas, several can be used at once.
The second characteristic feature of a stuffed animal is its similarity to a person in size and proportions. Although some experts believe that it is not necessary to do his arms, and especially his legs.
The fact that exact imitation by itself does not work is evidenced by sculptures and monuments that strangely attract rather than repel birds.
What garden scarecrow to make at the dacha: photo ideas for beautiful garden scarecrows
Frankly speaking, the most interesting sight is presented by various original garden scarecrows, pleasant in appearance.
Farmer
It is most popular to dress a garden scarecrow as a farmer or peasant, in other words, as a villager.
The figure of a stuffed animal dressed in a plaid shirt and jeans will not be critical.
2 scarecrows
An interesting idea for decorating a garden would be to form a family of several scarecrows.
Two stuffed adults.
Two scarecrow children.

Note! Still, scarecrows made from plastic bottles really turn out to be quite scary, so it’s better to make flower beds out of them.
Fisherman
Such a stuffed animal stimulates interest not only in amateur gardening, but also in fishing. It’s as if it wants to say: “Everything will be cool here!”
Soldier
A scarecrow dressed in military uniform and a gas mask will look very intimidating.
Bandit or cowboy
There would be no shame in dressing the scarecrow in a cowboy or, perhaps, a bandit outfit.
Athlete
Whatever you say, a monster athlete is cool!
Bird
It will be quite funny and original if you make a scarecrow with a bird's head. As they say: we knock out wedges with wedges.
And here is a simpler, but also not boring in all respects, option.
Pumpkin
This pumpkin man is undoubtedly worthy of the flattering attention of gardening fans.
And it’s hard to take your eyes off this foppish figure of a pumpkin farmer. He's still handsome!

So take the time and effort to invent your own image or use our selection of original ideas, as well as instructions for creating a garden scarecrow with your own hands.
Repellent functions
The scarecrow in the garden is not just a doll, it must imitate a living and dangerous person. In addition to menacingly spread arms, the following techniques are used:
- bright, saturated and different from the surroundings, preferably monotonous and contrasting colors;
- imitation of movement using lightweight fabrics and swinging elements;
- sound signals from improvised bells.
Cute Scarecrow to guard the garden
You can involve your household in the creative process - and literally the next day the brave Scarecrow will scatter all the crows in the garden. He is a little like the hero of Baum’s “The Land of Oz,” but our children are more familiar with the Scarecrow from Volkov’s books - he is stupid, but very kind.
The daring, smiling Scarecrow is a real decoration for any garden
So, the order of work. First of all, we design the head. To make the contour of the face even, place a basin or large dish on a piece of thick light-colored material (burlap) and outline it. Cut out two identical circles for the head. One of them is the face. Using a simple pencil we mark the places where the eyes, nose, and mouth will be located.

Decorative functions
Contrary to the established stereotype, the scarecrow does not have to be dressed in rags, unless the folklore style requires it. Various design solutions in the selection of photos with scarecrows will allow you to choose the right option for both a luxurious ornamental garden and a modest summer cottage.
Another important parameter is the stability and strength of the structure. A carefully made scarecrow, without falling parts, is not only pleasing to the eye and performs its function in the best possible way, but is also safe for humans, and especially for children, who will not pass by a large toy.

Stages of work
A garden guard is a prefabricated structure consisting of a frame, a head, torso, arms, legs and accessories in the form of clothing and hanging objects attached to it.
If desired, you can make paired, group compositions, or arrange them in a row. When assembling scarecrows on an already installed frame, you need to take care of the secure fastening and balance of the structure.
Types of frame
The wooden base can consist of two crosswise shovel handles or boards. The horizontally fixed bar (arms) is secured using self-tapping screws or rope winding. Such a doll can be easily disassembled for storage or transfer to another place.
The metal frame can be made from pipes and fittings in the traditional cross configuration, or in a more complex version, welding to create a humanoid figure with a natural position of arms and legs.
In order to prevent the process of rotting or corrosion, and to extend service life, the frame is protected with coatings of varnish and paint.
How to make a garden scarecrow with your own hands
Typically, any garden scarecrow is made based on the following components:
- frame (or torso);
- head;
- arms and legs;
- clothing and other accessories.
Next, we’ll talk in more detail about each detail that will be required when creating a garden scarecrow for your dacha with your own hands.
By the way! Our website also has materials and ideas for creating a scarecrow for Maslenitsa.
Frame
You can make it either metal or wood.
A wooden frame, as a rule, is made from two fairly thick boards of different lengths (or take 2 shovel handles). They are secured crosswise, driving a nail in the middle (or better yet, two, so that the scarecrow’s arms do not bend or wobble).
Boards (or cuttings) can also be secured using ordinary rope and a special knot. This fastening is no less reliable than a driven nail.
The future body of the garden monster can be made using the same 1 shovel handle, attaching a hanger to it instead of arms.
For more information on how to make a monster in the garden on such a frame, see the following step-by-step master class.

To make a metal frame, you will naturally need more time and also welding skills, or you will have to ask a neighbor for a favor or find a professional welder.

Head
You can make the head of a garden scarecrow from various materials in a variety of ways.
For example, you can sew a head from two pieces of fabric, stuffing it with straw or some other sealant. Or take a regular fabric bag and stuff it with something to give it the desired shape.
And then embroider the eyes, nose, mouth on the face and sew on the ears.
Although you can also draw with paint or wear a mask.
The most ordinary 5-liter bottle will do.
It’s not a sin to make the head of a garden monster from a garden pot, securely attaching it to the frame.
Often the stuffed animal is made entirely of hay , including its head.
As a head, you can use an old doll's head or the head of a used mannequin.
Or you can not make a scarecrow face, but use just a tall hat , but give it some form, in other words, stuff it, no matter what you have to do.
Or just throw a straw hat over the frame.
Arms and legs
If you want the garden scarecrow to be as human-like as possible, then you need to give it clear outlines of legs and arms.
It’s very easy to create the hands of a garden scarecrow: you just need to put gloves and stuff them with something, for example, the same straw.
The scarecrow's legs are made in the same way: visible from afar pants, a bright dress or skirt are put on the frame, and clearly visible shoes (for example, rubber boots or galoshes) are attached below.
Clothing and other accessories
How elegantly you dress your garden scarecrow will determine its aesthetic appearance and, possibly, its fate.
Headdress
The most typical headdress for a scarecrow is a hat.
However, the style and material of the hat can also be different.
It could even be a hat with earflaps.
You can put a scarf on your granny scarecrow.
It is not necessary to completely cover your head with a hat; it can be a rather symbolic and decorative headdress.
Accessories
It would not be trivial to place a badminton racket in the hands of a garden scarecrow.
And you can also create a whole composition: as if a girl is carrying a bucket of water on a yoke , which she just collected from a well.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to give a stuffed flowerbed stroller into the hands of a stuffed animal.
Interesting! The most popular and budget-friendly ideas for decorating a garden are creating flower beds from old tires and bottles.
Step-by-step instructions for creating a garden scarecrow
To make the simplest garden scarecrow, you will need the following materials:
- 3 cuttings from shovels (or strong and thick boards) of different lengths (one for the body - long, for the arms - a little shorter, for the legs - even shorter);
- 2 (or 4) nails and a hammer;
- head (bag filled with straw);
- clothing and other accessories.
Step-by-step instructions for creating a garden scarecrow with your own hands:
- Make a frame.
- Securely secure it in the ground.
- Attach the previously made head and put on the hat.
- Wear a shirt and pants or a dress (skirt) on the body, depending on gender.
- To make the appearance of the scarecrow more human-like, attach gloves instead of hands, and boots instead of feet.

Hands-legs
The problem of hands disappears when the frame is made crosswise. If the assembly is carried out on an ordinary pole, you can attach rag cylinders to it. The presence of legs on a scarecrow is not of fundamental importance for the scaring effect; they are made only for decorative purposes.
If you stuff your pants and sleeves with plastic bottles, they will sway in the wind and the scarecrow will become more mobile.
rustling scarecrow
Another “talking” watchman can be a scarecrow made of plastic bags. Just ordinary thin T-shirt bags will not work - they will tear very quickly under the influence of strong gusts of wind and will also scatter throughout the area. We will use thick, large supermarket bags or thick garbage bags.
- In the same way as in the previous example, we build a base for placing packages. If you want to diversify the design, you can twist two sticks in the form of a large letter “X”. Only then should the stand look more like a multiplication sign - “×”, so that the packages have enough free space to scatter to the sides;
- Be careful how you attach the bags. Under no circumstances should they be secured by the handles. The wind will inflate them like a parachute and will eventually tear or tear off the handles;
- Level the package on the floor. Take it from one side at its bottom and begin to assemble the accordion. At the end, secure with a few turns of tape. The handles should be at the bottom;
- If the bag is thick enough, you can separate it into wide ribbons;
- You need a lot of such bundles. Now, using the same tape, you need to tie the rack with plastic “guns”;
- We will do this as if we were making a Christmas tree. We attach the first 4 bundles to the bottom of the stand. Make room for the scarecrow to dig into the ground. Place the bundles opposite each other on the stick and wrap tightly with tape;
- Continue this way all the way to the top until you fill the entire length of the sticks;
- Do not make the distance between the packages too large. You can attach a plastic bottle to the top of each stick to give it something to shine.
Such a scarecrow will rustle and develop in different directions. And the more “magnificent” it is, the better! You can supplement the composition with tapes from old video cassettes. They are wider than those from audio cassettes and shine and develop perfectly.
