Ways to preserve cut pumpkins so they don't go to waste

What decorative varieties and breeds exist?

The following types of pumpkins are used as decoration:

  • Lagenaria. It has a “bottle” shape and can be used to make a bottle, ladle, vase and more. It is green in color but turns yellow-brown when dried.
  • Cucurbita. Not a large pumpkin with bright colors (red, orange, golden). After a couple of months of drying, the colors fade. Lanterns and flower pots are made from these fruits.

There are also a variety of decorative varieties of pumpkins, some of the most popular are:

  • Tangerine. Small pumpkins with smooth skin and not very prominent ribs.
  • Turban-shaped. The fruit looks as if it consists of several parts. This variety of pumpkin is large and has a bizarre appearance; the upper part often looks like a mushroom cap.
  • Sweet Dumpling. Large vegetable with ribs. The color alternates with white, yellow, green stripes and white spots.
  • Orange. Spherical or flattened small fruits of bright color.

Features of pumpkin and harvesting rules

Despite the fact that in modern art pumpkin is not used as often as a material for creating crafts, in everyday life its peel has been used for many centuries to make dishes. According to knowledgeable people, drinks in such containers do not spoil longer and retain their temperature. And if you infuse water in them, it will help treat diabetes.

Almost any variety of pumpkin can be used to create decorative items, but these two show themselves to be the best:

  • Cucurbita. The fruits are small and bright. They don’t even need to be processed in any way, just dry them properly. True, this material has one significant drawback - its bright shades begin to fade after some time, which affects the quality of the decor.
  • Advice: You should not try to speed up the drying process of the product, this will not lead to anything good. So-called express approaches lead to an unevenly dried component, which can fall apart at any time and even become moldy after a few hours.

    • Lagenaria. The unique shape of the product allows you to create the most unusual products from it, even at home. Despite the fact that the bark of the vegetable also changes its color over time, it still remains very pleasant - light brown or yellow-golden.

It’s not enough to dry the pumpkin for crafts; first you need to properly assemble and prepare it. There are very few rules for harvesting, but they are all very important to obtain the desired result:

    1. The stalks should dry out and turn brown. Only after this can the product be collected for making decor.
    2. The stalk must be cut and not broken off. In this case, you need to leave at least 6-10 cm of the plant part.
    3. Only ideal products are used. Rotten, softened and spoiled pumpkins will have to be thrown away.
    4. If frost is close, and the vegetable is a little unripe, it is still removed from the garden, otherwise the color of the product may deteriorate.

Large pumpkins are not suitable for decoration, because... they cannot be dried thoroughly and evenly. The smaller the workpiece, the easier it is to work with.
