Grape variety Sensation: description, cultivation, harvest secrets

Loading... This grape is only a little over ten years old, and it was bred by a simple amateur winegrower, but has already managed to gain popularity among professionals. Ultra-early ripening and frost resistance - this is what the Sensation grape “took”, the description of the variety is gradually included in all reference books on viticulture. Why not, because an amateurish, large-fruited and tasty hybrid not only ripens quickly, but can also be grown in any climate zone. And good immunity and winter hardiness only add “pluses” to its characteristics.

Origin

Sensation is a hybrid variety obtained by crossing the Talisman and Rizamat varieties.
The author of the selection is Vasily Ulyanovich Kapelyushny from the Rostov region. He worked for a long time to obtain a high-yielding grape variety. As a result of crossing two varieties, Sensation received their best parameters from the “parent” varieties: large berries and ease of care. Previously, by crossing the same varieties, the Julian variety was obtained.

Bred by whom?

Sensation grapes are a hybrid variety of table grapes obtained by Russian amateur breeder V.U. Droplet, as a result of crossing the varieties “Rizamat” and “Talisman”. This is one of the most successful experiments in the field of breeding.

The scientist himself called it a revolution in the field of viticulture, which is why the variety received the name “Sensation;. The grape deservedly acquired its sensational name, thanks to its excellent external characteristics and exquisite taste. You can find a detailed description of the variety on our website.

Planting and care

Sensation propagates well from cuttings. They have a fairly high level of rooting - above 80%. The variety can also be grafted onto other grape varieties.

The optimal time for planting in spring is the second half of April, for autumn planting - the end of October. Autumn planting is recommended for the southern regions.

It is recommended to dig the planting hole 1-2 months earlier than planting the cuttings. The hole should be about 80 cm deep and with the same diameter. The root system grows to a depth of 1 to 10 meters.

If the soil is clayey, it is recommended to install drainage in the hole. The drainage is constructed from a 15 cm layer of broken brick or crushed stone.

If the area is arid, then a vertical pipe for irrigation is installed at the bottom of the planting hole. In dry soil, grapes will greatly need additional watering. This is especially true in the first 2-3 years. The survival of cuttings in dry soil also depends on watering.

The planting must be deep. Fertilizers should not be used during planting. Fertilized soil must be sprinkled onto the drainage layer. This soil is obtained by mixing clean soil with humus, ash or other mineral fertilizers.

The seedling should be covered with clean soil, leaving two buds above the ground level.

Then the soil is compacted, watered and mulched with sawdust or other loose compounds.

Climate, growing region

Sensation adapts well to unfavorable climatic conditions. Withstands low temperatures down to -24°C. This indicator is considered an average level of frost resistance. The variety is grown in the northern latitudes of Ukraine and Belarus. In Russia it is grown even in Siberia and the Far East.

When growing in the northern zones and in the middle zone, experts recommend covering the bushes with agrofibre for the winter.

At southern latitudes there is no such need.

The soil

The most optimal soil option for Sensation is black soil. Another type of soil must be prepared according to the following schemes:

  1. if the soil is acidic, add lime;
  2. if clayey, dilute with sand;
  3. normal soil requires treatment with humus, wood ash and mineral fertilizers, after which it is necessary to weed the soil.

Preparation concerns the entire planting area. The area up to 2 meters around the planting hole should be treated.

Features of cultivation

The bushes are growing quickly. The recommended distance between them is from 1.5 to 2 meters. Thanks to this property, Sensation becomes attractive among owners of small gardens. The high yield and self-fertility of the variety allow you to plant only one Sensation bush and ultimately get a fairly generous harvest.

To obtain maximum yield, it is recommended to choose a place for Sensation where the sun's rays reach without obstacles and for as long as possible.

Planting and Harvest Time

The optimal planting time is the beginning of May, the end of April. Also suitable for autumn planting. The optimal autumn time is the end of October.

Expert opinion

Dzyubenko Alena Vladimirovna

agricultural technician

We've read a lot of debate about planting times. We tried the autumn and spring versions. As a result, we consider spring planting optimal, since the bush will have time to become well established by winter. Autumn planting in regions with harsh climates can fail even with covering and mulching. At a minimum, the harvest will be modest.

Watering and fertilizing

The entire care process consists of the following simple measures:

  1. watering;
  2. feeding - infrequent;
  3. rationing of ovaries;
  4. light shelter - relevant for all regions except the southern ones.

Intensive watering is needed only during the period of formation and growth of berries. 3 weeks before harvesting, watering stops completely.

Fertilizer should be moderate. Optimal types of fertilizer:

  • 1-2 buckets of compost for each bush;
  • decomposed manure;
  • wood ash.

Caution should be exercised with nitrogen fertilizers. It is advisable to give such fertilizers in the form of organic matter.

Trimming

Pruning helps to get a harvest with large, fleshy and juicy berries. Early pruning frees the bushes from excess branches.

Every third shoot should be pruned. According to another scheme, it is enough to leave 45 bunches on one vine.

Mass pruning is done in the fall. At this time, the shoots should be shortened at the level of 6-8 buds, leaving mostly 2-3 shoots. For Sensation, the fan shape of the bush is optimal.

The length of the vine reaches up to 50 meters, but it is optimal to leave the length no more than 4 meters.

Characteristics of the bunch:

The bunch of “Sensation” is beautiful, conical in shape with blades, the stalk is elongated. Brush of moderate density, 30 or more centimeters long. Weighs on average 0.8 - 2.0 kilograms, sometimes reaching 3.0-4.0 kilograms.

The berries in the cluster are aligned in size, finger-shaped. Length is about 45-55 millimeters, width – 25 millimeters. Grapes reach a weight of 12-22 grams. The color of the berries is uneven, amber-pink in the stage of full ripeness reaching red. The unshaded parts of the bunch are brighter in color.

Diseases and pests

Oidium

Mildew

Gray rot

Wasps

The variety suffers minimally from major diseases:

  • oidium;
  • mildew;
  • gray rot.

In addition, the variety suffers from wasps due to its high sugar content.

The integral value of durability is rated as 2.5 out of 5 maximum. Such parameters allow you to obtain an environmentally friendly harvest, which uses a minimum of chemicals.

Grape resistance to diseases and pests is assessed on a special scale from 0 to 5 points, where 0 means the highest level of resistance, 5 means severe susceptibility to pests.

Chemical composition of berries

Sensation grape berries contain a large amount of natural sugar.

The harmonious taste of grapes is liked by many lovers of this culture. However, its chemical composition is as rich as its flavor palette. The berries of the variety contain:

  • vitamins K and C;
  • pantothenic and folic acids;
  • biotin;
  • riboflavin;
  • natural sugar (fructose, xylose, sucrose);
  • organic acids (malic, citric and tartaric);
  • microelements (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium);
  • macroelements (fluoride, fiber, pectin, iodine, copper, zinc and iron).

The skin of the fruit contains tannins and essential oils. In addition, the peel is covered with a thin layer of natural wax. The juice has a positive effect on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, strengthens the immune system, has a calming effect on the nervous system, and fights against anemia, diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. But it also performed well in the fight against excess cholesterol, kidney disease and metabolic disorders.

Advantages and disadvantages

If we summarize all the characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages of Sensation can be summarized as follows:

  • resistance to low temperatures;
  • high survival rates of cuttings - up to 82%;
  • resistance to diseases;
  • early ripening;
  • does not require artificial pollination;
  • fruiting begins early;
  • the clusters hold tightly to the bushes, without falling off even when overexposed;
  • fruits tolerate transportation well over long distances;
  • excellent taste and appearance of the fruit.
  • the fruits contain a lot of sugar, which makes them attractive to wasps;
  • the harvest requires rationing.

Description of the bush

Bushes of the “Sensation” variety are distinguished by high survival rate and high growth rate. During the process of growth, the grapevine is able to double its size, which greatly simplifies the propagation process.

However, due to its fertility, a large number of fruit-bearing buds are formed on the vine, which must be periodically pruned in order to avoid overloading the bush and to obtain a high-quality harvest.

The presence of bisexual flowers allows the plant to pollinate itself. This not only greatly facilitates the pollination process and increases productivity, but also makes the bush an additional pollinator for other same-sex varieties.

Comparison with other varieties

The sensation has many similarities with the Uzbek table grape variety Rizamat and the Hungarian Victor.

Reviews about the variety Sensation

Natalia Smorodina

Far East, experienced winegrower

We have been growing Sensation for four years now. Every year we receive a rich harvest - up to 70-80 kg, part of which we sell at the local market, and part of which we keep for the joy of our family. It happens that in suitable conditions it is possible to store grapes until the New Year. We are very pleased with the variety.

Serov Ivan Alexandrovich

Chelyabinsk, amateur winegrower

This variety was recommended to me by a winegrower I know. At first I doubted it, then I planted a couple of bushes as a test. At the beginning of August, they really pleased us: first with their elegant color, then with their juicy taste. And the family is delighted, and there is something to surprise the guests. Next year we will plant more Sensation bushes.
