Frost-resistant Galia grapes are perfect for growing in regions with cool climates. This variety will delight its owner with high productivity and good immunity to diseases and pests.

Grape variety Galia

Description

Galia is a grape variety with tall bushes and large leaves. The shoots ripen well, usually 60-70% of the total number on the plant are fruitful. When growing Galia grapes, good rooting of cuttings and compatibility with rootstocks is also observed. The frost resistance of the variety is excellent - the bushes do not freeze even when the temperature drops to minus 24C.

The clusters have a conical shape, are medium loose, and are formed from oval, rather large, dark blue berries. The weight of the berries varies from 8 to 12 g. The pulp is juicy and fleshy. The skin is dense, durable, but thin and edible.

The taste of the berries is good; in general, there is harmony and a high sugar content of about 17% with an acidity of 6-8 g/l.

Important! In order for the berries to acquire their color and ripen faster, it is recommended to regularly thin out the foliage near the bunches, which provides better access to sunlight to the grapes.

Reviews

All reviews from practicing gardeners about Galia grapes boil down to the following advantages:

  1. Very early ripening dates, due to which the vine and berries have time to ripen in open ground even in cold regions.
  2. Pleasant sweet and sour taste of berries.
  3. Disease resistance.
  4. Good yield and large bunch sizes.
  5. Stable fruiting.

There are also disadvantages:

  1. It is necessary to ensure that the bush is not overloaded, as the berries may pea.
  2. Sometimes pollination is unstable.
  3. If there is excess moisture in the soil, the berries may crack.

Pros and cons of a hybrid

Gala has enviable characteristics and is especially valued for its presentable appearance and taste.

Advantages:

  • high yield;
  • blue fruit color, beautiful appearance;
  • excellent taste characteristics;
  • high immunity;
  • early ripening.

Flaws:

  • the harvest must be harvested immediately after the berries ripen;
  • frost resistance is average;
  • requirement for care.

A gardener will fully appreciate a variety only when he plants it on his site.

The grapes have advanced far beyond the borders of the southern regions and are successfully grown in the northern regions, the Urals and the Far East. Hybrid forms successfully take root and bear fruit in rural areas. Gala grapes are among the most popular varieties.

Basic indicators

Crossing Kodryanka and Podarok Zaporozhye gave reliability and stability to the new hybrid variety. It has an excellent commercial appearance, stands out in the product range, and attracts attention with its balanced taste.

Characteristic properties include description:

  • Ripening occurs in early or mid-early periods (110 – 125 days).
  • The growth vigor of the bushes is great. Tall, they are covered with wide leaves. Excellent ripening vine.
  • Self-pollinating variety, with bisexual flowers.
  • The berries are of significant volume and weight, oval, blue. The weight of one fruit reaches 12 g;
  • The brushes weigh 0.5 - 1 kg (there are specimens up to 2 kg), cylindrical or conical in appearance.
  • There are no peas.
  • The taste is balanced and soft.
  • The fleshy interior of the berry is juicy.
  • Acidity is about 7 g/l.
  • Sugar content 16%.

The fruiting coefficient is not too high (1.3). Ripening is delayed when the vine is overloaded, deteriorating the quality and taste of the berries. The variety always shows high yield.

The seedlings take root successfully. Rarely becomes infected with mildew and oidium. Frost resistance is moderate (-21°C).

It does not last long on bushes, as it is immediately damaged by wasps. Excess moisture leads to cracks in fruits that are not prone to rotting.

Gala grapes should be removed from the bushes immediately after ripening

Prepared cuttings are planted in the ground in the spring, with the exception of late night frosts. The variety is not distinguished by increased tolerance to frost, so autumn planting is unsuccessful.

Before immersing seedlings in pits, they undergo a thorough inspection. The roots are shortened. The shoots are pruned, the weak ones are completely removed. The petiole is given freshness and strength. There should be no damage or signs of disease infection.

Pits are dug to 0.8 m in three dimensions (width, length, depth). A fertile layer of 30 cm is laid at the bottom, 3 buckets of organic fertilizers and superphosphate are added.

A seedling with shoots of 2–3 eyes is lowered into the recess at an angle and buried in 10 cm of soil mixture. Plain soil, without fertilizers, is poured on top of it. Space is left for watering (5 - 10 cm).

A hole is made in a radius of 15 cm around the cutting, which is filled with mulch and watered.

Organic and mineral fertilizers are placed in the hole for planting Gala.

Variety care

To obtain a stable, abundant harvest, one must adhere to the description of agrotechnical techniques, to which Gala responds with gratitude. The list of events includes:

  • mulching;
  • watering;
  • fertilizer;
  • pruning;
  • hiding;
  • protection.

Adding mulch maintains the balance of water in the soil, protects against low temperatures, and saturates the root system with oxygen and nutrients.

Mulching activities are carried out throughout the growing season. From the moment of planting until the vine goes to sleep.

Before covering, the plant is insulated by covering it with peat, straw, special materials, and humus. Organic mulch takes up an average of 10 cm.

Excess moisture is bad for the plant. The variety must be watered throughout the growing season. But this must be done carefully, taking into account changes in weather, climate zone, and land quality. The growing season lasts from mid-spring to mid-October.

Watering is not allowed at the time of flowering bunches. Flowers tend to fall off, and the variety does not produce berries. Before laying the branches for the winter, the grapes are watered. It stores moisture for the long cold months. Approximate amount of water for each bush:

  • for winter 70 l/1 sq.m;
  • during the growing season 50 l/1 sq.m.

If the water in the soil is very close, the grapes do not lack moisture. Rather, its quantity needs to be reduced. For this purpose, drainage is made.

According to the owners' descriptions, Gala needs to be fed regularly. Only young cuttings do not need fertilizer. For grown bushes, organic matter (compost, peat, humus, etc.) is added in the proportion of 10 kg / 1 sq.m once every 3 times.

Mineral fertilizing is carried out every year. In the spring, as soon as the soil begins to “breathe,” it is given ammonium nitrate or nitrogen. Before flowering, as well as after it, when pea-sized fruits form in clusters, you need to feed the soil with potassium salts and superphosphate.

This will ensure the development of a good harvest.

For the Gala variety, it is important to carry out timely pruning. With an abnormal load on the vine, the berries decrease in size and worsen the taste. An improperly formed plant does not have enough strength to maintain the quality of the fruit. In the fall, before sheltering, the vine is pruned, leaving a maximum of 8 eyes. There should be no more than 45 buds per bush.

Protection from winter frosts and piercing winds is provided by covering the grapes. The bushes are collected, tied, laid on bedding material (to avoid freezing of the vine), and secured.

Metal arcs are installed in the ground, over which a protective film is stretched. It is covered with earth on the sides to preserve the structure in strong winds and heavy snowfall.

The ends make it possible to open the structure during warming.

Another way to preserve your bushes is to cover them with a good layer of soil. This method is used in areas with moderate winters. Where the air temperature does not drop below -15°C.

“I will not regret the roses, Withered in the light spring; The grapes on the vines are dear to me, Ripe in the clusters under the mountain, The beauty of my green valley, The joy of golden autumn, Oblong and transparent, Like the fingers of a young maiden.”

Recently, a significant number of new hybrid forms of grapes have appeared, which have become worthy competitors to already proven and popular varieties. The "Gala" grape is a prominent representative of the sought-after table grapes obtained as a result of crossing work.

Growing

When planting and growing Galia grapes, you will not have to put in a lot of effort if you choose high-quality planting material.

Important! Please ensure that the seedlings do not show obvious damage to the vines, buds, or signs of disease.

When landing, follow these rules:

  1. The best time for rooting is spring, when there is no longer frost, but the sap has not yet begun to flow.
  2. When planting, the roots are pruned and the shoots are shortened.
  3. The diameter of the planting hole is 80 cm, the distance between seedlings is 2 m.
  4. You need to add a soil mixture with fertilizers to the hole - the height of this layer should be about 30 cm. The mixture usually includes 200 g of superphosphate and 150 g of potassium sulfate. You can also use organic matter, but only well-rotted manure or ready-made compost in the amount of 1 bucket.
  5. After planting is completed, the vine is watered with warm water - the average consumption per bush is 2 buckets.

Landing rules

It is recommended to plant in the spring, which allows the seedlings to take root well and adapt to the winter cold during the summer and autumn. Insufficient frost resistance of the variety requires sheltering the grapevine for the winter.

Strawberry cultivation technology "Darselect"

Planting of seedlings is carried out in several stages:

  1. Advance digging of planting holes with dimensions of 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8 m.
  2. Drainage of the planting hole using fine gravel or crushed stone, which will protect the plants from stagnation of moisture and the development of diseases of the root system.
  3. Filling a layer of soil mixture with the addition of basic fertilizers.
  4. Backfilling of nutrient soil.
  5. For seedlings installed in a planting hole, the root system should be straightened and covered with nutritious soil mixture.
  6. After tying the vine to the support and watering, it is necessary to mulch the soil around the plant.

In the first two weeks after planting, you should water abundantly and carefully monitor the course of the adaptation period. Thanks to the excellent rooting of cuttings, propagation of this hybrid form is carried out without problems or complications.

Diseases

The Galia grape variety is distinguished by its high resistance to diseases such as:

  • downy mildew;
  • oidium;
  • gray rot.

According to reviews from practicing gardeners, over the course of several years of growth, the vine was not affected by these diseases at all. Relative resistance is also present against black and white rot.

But wasps can attack the crop, so it is necessary to protect the bunches from them and remove ripe berries in time.

Grape variety with outstanding qualities - “Gala”

Growing a vineyard in your garden is not such a difficult task. In addition, more and more varieties bred in our climatic latitudes are appearing on the market.

An example of this is the new grape variety “Gala”, which will be an excellent option both for obtaining wonderful berries and for decorating a plot.

Care

During cultivation, you should adhere to the following rules:

  1. Pruning the vine for 8-10 eyes, as well as large molding with a supply of old wood.
  2. In regions where sudden spring frosts are not uncommon, it is better to create a shelter from non-woven material. The same can be done for the winter.
  3. Although the variety is resistant to diseases, preventive spraying can be carried out before flowering and before harvesting with Bordeaux mixture of 1% concentration.
  4. Water as needed, but it is important to do the first watering in the spring after the frosts have ended and after a positive result of pruning. But during the flowering period, watering is not recommended, otherwise the flowers may fall off.
  5. After watering, you can mulch the soil with a layer of 5-10 cm to ensure the retention of moisture in the soil.
  6. To maintain water balance and so that young roots do not lack moisture, the soil around the seedling is covered with mulch to a depth of 5-10 cm.

Galia grapes are a good unpretentious variety for growing in any region. This is an excellent option for beginning winegrowers and those who want to get a harvest of delicious berries without putting in a lot of effort.

History of Gala grape breeding

“Gala” was bred by the Ukrainian breeder Zagorulko V.V. by crossing “Kodryanka” and “Gift to Zaporozhye” in a region with a temperate continental climate.

Immediately after its appearance on the market, the variety was sold at high prices (more than 2,000 rubles per seedling ) due to its outstanding qualities.

At the moment, seedlings can be purchased for no more than 100-200 rubles , due to the fact that breeders managed to propagate this variety, but it has not lost its remarkable properties.
