Brilliant grapes: what you need to know about them, description of the variety, reviews

History of variety development

This variety was bred in 2005 by Russian breeders in Novocherkassk.

The variety was obtained by crossing Victoria grapes and Original white. Further tests of the new grapes were also carried out in Novocherkassk.

As a result, Blestyashchiy grapes can be grown in the south of Russia, in the central regions, as well as in most regions of Ukraine. The variety is quite resistant to frost - can withstand temperatures down to -21-23 degrees Celsius,

and with sufficient shelter it winters well even in the Urals or Siberia.

Blestyashchiy grapes: description of the variety

The bushes of this grape grow very quickly, during the season all the young shoots have time to ripen. Every year a large number of stems are formed on the vine, so the Blestyashchi bushes require regular pruning. 5-6 eyes are cut out on each shoot to improve yield. It is also necessary to thin out the bushes in order not to thicken them and prevent them from growing too much.

On a note!

Male and female flowers appear on the shoots, so the Blestyashchiy grape variety does not require the presence of other pollinating varieties nearby.

The ripening brushes are conical in shape and of medium density, quite loose. The weight of each bunch of Brilliant grapes is approximately 0.5-0.6 kg, but some clusters can reach a weight of 1 kg. Tassels growing on stepsons can weigh 0.1-0.3 kg

. The berries are large and round.

Weight of ripe fruits – about 7 g, color – yellowish-green

. Fully ripe berries may become pinkish in color. But when growing these grapes in shaded areas, such colors may not appear.

The pulp is tender, with a slight crunch. The skin is thin, soft, and when eaten it is practically not felt. The amount of sugars in ripe berries is up to 18.3 g per 100 g of product, the amount of acids is 6.6 g/dm3. Therefore, the taste of ripe Blestyashchiy grapes is sweet, with slight sourness, and contains light muscat notes.

The harvest ripens almost simultaneously, so there is no need for gradual harvesting of ripened clusters, as with many other grape varieties.

The collected bunches can easily be transported over different distances without spoiling their taste. But the marketability of ripe fruits is not very high due to the non-standard coloring. Blestyashchiy grapes are not grown on an industrial scale because their berries are too small.

Harvested grapes can be consumed fresh, as well as canned - for making marshmallows, jam and jelly.

Blestyashchiy grapes are classified as drought-resistant varieties

– it can go for a long time without watering, even in hot weather. Frost resistance is quite good - without shelter, the vines can tolerate frosts down to -23 degrees Celsius. At lower temperatures, the bushes of this grape require shelter. In this case, up to 65% of all buds can easily overwinter on the vines, most of which are flower buds.

Productivity of the Blestyashchiy grape variety

The grapes of this variety are characterized by high yield, its fruiting coefficient is 0.8%. From each bush you can harvest up to 12-14 kg of crop.

Blestyashchiy grapes are classified as early ripening varieties - the ripening of the bunches occurs 3-3.5 months after the appearance of young leaves. Ripe bunches can be collected from July 20; in colder regions, the ripening period is delayed by 10-14 days

. Ripe bunches can hang on the vines for quite a long time without falling off or losing their taste.

Grape variety “Brilliant” – season 2019

Diseases and pests

It should be noted that this variety is excellently resistant to most diseases that affect other varieties of this berry crop:

  • to mildew – 3.7-3.9 points;
  • to oidium – 3.2-3.4 points.

Blestyashchiy grapes have especially high resistance to gray rot. The variety is also not susceptible to peas.

However, these grape bushes have slightly below average resistance to some diseases - anthracnose, chlorosis, bacteriosis, rubella, and bacterial canker. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out preventive measures to prevent these diseases.

Useful article!
Fungicides for grapes
For preventive spraying, it is recommended to use the following preparations:

  • Blue Bordeaux;
  • Coeside;
  • Champion.

Also, ripening berries are often attacked by wasps.

. To protect the bunches from these flying insects, it is advisable to remove all wasp nests from the area in advance. And when growing grapes on trellises, it is necessary to seal all the holes in the pipes from which they are made - wasps like to settle there. It is also recommended to cover the bunches of grapes at the moment of ripening in a special mesh with very small cells.

Grape vines should not be planted near fruit trees whose fruits actively attract these flying insects. You can also treat vines with insecticides, which are harmful to wasps but harmless to humans.

Also, you should not arrange drip irrigation in the area with these grapes, since with such watering the bushes begin to wither.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of the Blestyashchy grape variety include:

  1. early fruit ripening;
  2. good taste of ripe berries;
  3. resistance of Blestyaschiy grapes to most diseases characteristic of other varieties;
  4. the variety is not prone to peas;
  5. this vineyard adapts well to different climatic conditions;
  6. the harvested crop tolerates transportation well over different distances;
  7. stable and high productivity;
  8. The collected bunches can be stored for quite a long time.

Photos of growing Blestyashchiy grapes

But the variety also has its drawbacks:

  1. uneven coloring of ripe fruits, from which it is impossible to accurately determine the degree of ripeness of the berries;
  2. drip irrigation has a bad effect on the vines of this grape - their leaves begin to wither;
  3. The variety is highly susceptible to wasp attack at the time of crop ripening.

Taste and characteristics of the harvest

Considering that the “Brilliant” variety, with a favorable climate and adequate care, is characterized by high productivity, there should not be a shortage of berries. Moreover, the taste qualities of this variety are exceptionally high.

First of all, this concerns the high percentage of sugar content, which amounts to 18.4 grams per 100 cubic centimeters, that is, it is very sweet.

Description of the variety's berries: the taste is fleshy and juicy, with a characteristic nutmeg taste and crispness when biting. The skin of the berries is quite dense, which has a good effect on transportation; it is practically not palatable. Blestyashchiy is not suitable for industrial scale due to its small berries.

Another feature for which the "Brilliant" is so prized is the prune. This is a waxy substance that covers the berries, giving them a “metallic shine” (hence the name of the variety).

Thanks to the priun, excess moisture evaporation does not occur, the berries are less susceptible to damage during picking and transportation, and they are stored longer. The clusters are conical in shape and rarely exceed one kilogram in weight (800 grams is the average).

“Brilliant” berries contain a huge amount of useful substances and acids: ascorbic acid; wine; malic and cinnamic acids; glucose; fructose; flavonols; calcium; manganese; iodine; iron and cobalt. In cool climates and low light conditions, they have absolutely no effect on taste.

Due to the high taste of the berries, grapes are perfect for making jam or other desserts.

Those who value whole, selected berries will like “Brilliant”, since the variety is little susceptible to peas.

Planting grapes Brilliant

Planting of Blestyaschiy grape seedlings can be done in the fall (early October) or early spring (in April).

The beds for planting this berry crop are prepared in the fall - 7-10 days before planting in October, or six months before spring planting.

It is advisable to place the beds from north to south - in this case, all the bushes will have enough lighting, since they will not shade their “neighbors”.

Advice!

If the site has heavy clay soils, then they should be improved by adding a sufficient amount of river sand and compost or humus - this measure will make them more loose and permeable to moisture and oxygen.

If the soil is acidic, you can add wood ash to it. And too depleted soil is enriched by adding organic matter to it - well-rotted manure, compost or humus. It is not recommended to apply mineral fertilizers, since Brilliant grapes do not like them.

The distance between neighboring bushes should be at least 1.2 m, as this variety loves space.

Further care for Brilliant grapes

Their productivity directly depends on further care of the Blestyashchiy grape vines. Although this variety is not too demanding to care for, you still have to follow certain rules.

Excellent grape varieties!

You should not arrange drip irrigation in such a way that drops of moisture fall on the foliage and stems - this can cause sunburn on the vegetative mass. In addition, with this type of watering, the foliage begins to fade.

Pipes for watering the vineyard are laid along the surface of the soil, and special holes are made in them for ground drip irrigation. You just have to regularly make sure that these holes are not clogged with soil and fertilizers.

Vineyard feeding

The main fertilizing is applied when planting seedlings of this grape, and they are applied to the bottom of the planting holes. During the summer season, fertilizers are usually applied “by leaf” before budding begins, and also throughout the summer period as needed. It is better to carry out foliar feeding of Blestyashchiy grapes in the evening.

Pruning grapes Brilliant

Grapes are pruned in the fall, after the vines have shed their leaves. It is not recommended to remove leaves until leaf fall, so that all nutrients “reach” the root system.

Photo of grape pruning scheme

During planned autumn pruning of Shiny grapes, shoots are usually cut to 5-6 eyes; this is necessary so that the plants do not waste nutrition on weakened shoots, which will still freeze out during the winter.

The pinching procedure is carried out regularly throughout the summer season, as well as during the autumn pruning procedure.

Preparing for winter

Although the Blestyashchiy grape variety is considered frost-resistant, the vineyard should still be covered for the winter, protecting the vines from freezing.

Therefore, before the onset of frost, all shoots are untied from the trellises, placed on the ground and covered with non-woven agrofibre or a special film. If the variety is grown in regions with cold winters, then a layer of soil about 10 cm thick should be poured over the shelter.

Care

Table 1. Agrotechnical measures for grapes.

What to doHow to do
IrrigationA common irrigation option is to install a drip system, through which you can evenly irrigate the bushes, apply fertilizing and fertilizers. After planting, root fertilizers are introduced, and during the flowering period - foliar fertilizers. During the season, the plant needs watering approximately once every 3-5 weeks. But it is necessary to moisten the soil taking into account the degree of its dryness. Overwatering can lead to root rot. After watering, the tree trunk circle is mulched using sawdust or dry grass.
Top dressing Fertilizers used for grapes are conventionally divided into basic and additional (feeding). In the first case, it is advisable to use mineral compounds in combination with organic matter. They need to be introduced once every 2-3 years. Fertilizers are applied in small portions at different stages of the growing season:
  • upon landing;
  • during the flowering period;
  • at the fruit formation phase;
  • while preparing the plant for wintering.

Additional fertilizers are applied alternately using organic and mineral compounds. Popular and available feeds include: bird droppings, peat, manure (rotted), compost.

TrimmingThe bush forms quickly, so there is a need for pruning. The vine is pruned so that two nodes remain on it (or the so-called horns are left). Stepchildren and excess shoots are cut off. Experts recommend sticking to a horizontal cordon when forming bushes.
Preparing for winter When cultivating in the southern regions of the country, shelter is not used. If persistent frosts are possible in winter, during which the air temperature drops below -25 degrees, the vine is wrapped in special material. It can be film or agrofibre.

For short plants, simply dig in some soil and cover it on top with spruce branches, dry grass or branches. In early autumn, the vine is dug up so that when the weather warms, it does not have time to rot.

Brilliant grapes: reviews from those who grow

Konstantin, 45 years old, Pyatigorsk: I grow different varieties of grapes in my garden, mainly for sale. I also planted the Blestyashchiy grape variety. Although it has good yield, excellent taste, and good shelf life, the variety is not suitable for sale due to its not very beautiful appearance. Therefore, I keep these grapes exclusively for personal needs.

Andrey, 39 years old, Stavropol region: I have had this variety for quite a long time. I especially liked the harvest last year - sweet berries with a pleasant nutmeg aftertaste. The summer was dry, but all the vines ripened perfectly, and the quality of the harvest was not affected. But for some reason they are not resistant to mildew, so regular spraying of the vines against this disease is required.

Olga, 50 years old, p. Moskovskoe: In the first years, the Blestyaschiy variety pleased me with its harvests; the berries were tasty, sweet, but slightly small. I thought that over time I would “disperse” the size of the berries. However, after a few years, the vines began to “absorb” almost all the nutrients, and the clusters began to wither. The next year I reduced the load on the vines, but no miracle happened, everything repeated itself as in the previous year. Therefore, this grape variety had to be removed.

Despite the small size of the berries and their not very attractive color, the Blestyashchy grape variety is becoming popular among gardeners due to its high yield, excellent taste of the berries and good resistance to diseases.

The collected bunches can be consumed fresh, as well as preserved.

Secrets of experienced winegrowers for a “brilliant” harvest

The “Brilliant” variety cannot be called very whimsical and demanding to care for - cultivation still has its secrets and nuances. Having carefully analyzed various forums of grape lovers and their successes, we can highlight several points, knowing which you can get a very good harvest, even without being an experienced winegrower. So:

The secret of good planting is kept in well-prepared soil, enriched with fertilizer (see above). In addition to this, think through the feeding and watering system in advance. Drip irrigation is suitable for “Brilliant”. And also, if possible, you should install a small pipe next to the seedling for better supply of fertilizer. It is useful to learn how to distinguish between fertilizers and apply them correctly. So, root ones are applied during planting, foliar ones - additionally, during flowering. We are considering mulch as another option for fertilizer and protection at the same time. It can be dry sawdust, pine needles, newspapers and even grass. But we plant it only in the warm season, when the soil is quite well warmed up, in June.

Carefully monitor the condition of the vine. The vine “drops” its fruits - it lacks the necessary minerals and fertilizers for all the fruits to ripen. Therefore, carefully regulate the number of bunches. You can get larger bunches, and this results in larger berries with fewer quantities. This is especially true for this variety, because the berries of “Brilliant” are not large in size.

Despite the good endurance and resistance to various diseases, even a novice winegrower should not forget about special care and prevention products, such as fungicides.

It is not advisable to more carefully monitor the number of stepsons, since they deprive the main bush of necessary minerals and do not bring any benefit. Experts do not recommend getting rid of them completely; just tear off a couple of sheets. Separately, it is necessary to note the pruning of the vines for the winter. This does not need to be done too early; you need to wait until the juices “go to the root”.

Despite the fact that “Brilliant” is positioned as a low-resistant variety, it needs to be insulated. The ideal option for wintering would be to cover it with plastic wrap; there is no need to seal it.
