White Miracle grape variety: characteristics, cultivation techniques

The White Miracle grape fully lives up to its name. High-yielding, early ripening, sweet, good keeping quality, and high frost resistance - these are just some of the advantages of this variety. That is why the popularity of the White Miracle only increases every year.

When choosing a variety, any winegrower focuses not only on the yield and taste characteristics of the fruit. The variety's resistance to diseases and low temperatures is of great importance. And according to these indicators, according to the description and photo, the White Miracle grape variety is a clear favorite.

History of selection

The White Miracle grape variety was bred at the Russian Research Institute of Viticulture named after. Ya. I. Potapenko. The institute's staff have bred more than 60 varieties.

When breeding a hybrid, breeders crossed two varieties - Vostorg, characterized by early ripening and excellent frost resistance, and Original, which has good marketability and excellent taste characteristics.

Among winegrowers, the White Miracle grape variety received several more names - Song, Monomakh's Cap, and OV-6-pk. Like most hybrid forms bred on the basis of Delight, this variety is highly resistant to many diseases and is large-fruited.

Important! The grapes begin to ripen in early to mid-August.

Distinctive characteristics of the variety

A brief description of the White Miracle grape variety is as follows:

  • Early ripening, table variety. The ripening period is on average 105-110 days.
  • Vigorous or medium-growing grapevines.
  • Large clusters have a clearly defined cylindrical shape with medium density.
  • The average weight of a grape cluster ranges from 0.7-1 kg.

The ripening of the grapevine is 75-80%. The flowers of the grape are bisexual. For this reason, the variety is considered self-pollinating.

Excellent frost resistance makes it possible to grow the White Miracle grape variety even in northern regions with harsh climatic conditions. Grape bushes can easily tolerate winter frosts of –25˚С –27˚С.

Fruit characteristics

The berries of the White Miracle grape (see photo) are large, slightly oval in shape. The weight of one grape reaches 6-10 grams.

In the phase of full ripeness, the color of the fruits is predominantly greenish, but when ripened in the open sun they acquire a yellowish tint. The skin of grapes is very thin and almost invisible when eaten.

Interesting! If you follow the recommended rules of agricultural technology, some bunches of grapes can reach a mass of even 1.3-1.5 kg.

Juicy, fleshy pulp, harmonious taste, sweet, refreshing fruits with barely perceptible sourness. The sugar content in ripe fruits reaches 18-19%. Acid content – 6-7 g/l. According to a ten-point system of taste qualities, fruits are rated at 7.9-8 points.

A distinctive feature of the White Miracle grape variety is the absence of berry shedding. You don’t have to rush to pick the grapes after ripening - the fruits can hang on the bushes for up to 2-3 weeks without losing their quality.

White Miracle grapes: characteristics and description of the variety, planting and care

Among the varieties bred in the new millennium, the early White Miracle grape stands out. Gardeners value it for its excellent berry taste, high frost resistance, and good keeping quality.

History of appearance

The variety with the original name was bred by domestic breeders. For many years, employees of the Ya. I. Potapenko Research Institute of Viticulture worked on the creation of an early, long-lasting grape hybrid. Parent pair - Original, famous for its juicy, good-tasting berries, and winter-hardy Delight.

The result is the White Miracle grape, which appeared in 2002 and was popularly named Song. Also in the catalogs there is a second name - OV-6-pk.

Description of the variety

The bushes are medium-sized, the shoots are dark burgundy in color.
The leaves are small in size, bright green. In terms of the growing season, the variety is early; the berries begin to be picked after approximately 107-110 days. Peduncles are large, bisexual. No pollinator planting required. White miracle is suitable as a pollinator for other crop varieties. Forms a large number of fruitful buds and requires regular pruning of excess eyes. If the stems are not trimmed, there is a risk of overloading, the berries become smaller, and the yield decreases.

Frost resistance indicators are high, the vine can withstand low temperatures of minus 25˚С…27˚С. The white miracle was bred specifically for areas with a harsh climate; the grape adapts well to the Urals and a number of regions of Siberia. It is grown in the North-West (Leningrad region, Karelia), throughout Belarus. The hybrid produces excellent yields in the south of the country.

Characteristics of berries

By the beginning of August, large, cylindrical clusters ripen on the bushes. The density is average, the ripening indicators are 80%. On adult bushes, the brushes reach a mass of 800-1000 grams.

The grapes are large, 5-6 grams, with thin skin. The color at the ripening stage is soft green, later the fruits acquire a yellowish tint. Subject to the conditions of agricultural technology and proper care, the White Miracle produces brushes of up to 1.3-1.5 kg.

The pulp is juicy, sweet, the sourness is faint. Acidity indicators – 7 g/l, sugar level – 19%. Expert assessment of the taste of the variety’s berries – 8 points (the highest number of points on the scale is 10).

The berries are used for dessert. When fully ripe, the fruits do not fall off the bushes and remain on the vine for a long time (2-3 weeks).

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The white miracle does not require special care, is unpretentious and not capricious. Seedlings appeared on sale in nurseries not so long ago, but the variety has managed to gain popularity among winegrowers.

Advantages:

  • early growing season;
  • excellent berry taste;
  • large brushes;
  • good survival rate of rootstocks;
  • high commercial qualities of ripe grapes;
  • keeping quality.

The White Miracle grape tolerates cold winters and can be grown without shelter in the middle zone. The hybrid is resistant to most diseases. If necessary preventive work is carried out, it does not cause problems for gardeners.

Flaws:

  • juicy ripe berries attract wasps;
  • shoots on bushes of the first year are very fragile;
  • the variety is not suitable for transportation.

Gardeners need to consider measures to protect the bushes, as well as carefully care for young shoots.

Resistance to diseases and pests

The grape variety bred in Russia is highly resistant to mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose, and various rots. To prevent fungal infections, bushes are treated with Bordeaux mixture in early spring, and later sprayed with Arcerid, Strobi, Horus.

During the period of ripening of berries, traps (adhesive tapes, plastic bottles) are set up to protect against wasps, and the plantings are covered with nets. It is effective to repel insects with an aqueous solution of table vinegar (wasps do not like the strong smell of the product) or baking soda. Chemicals are used only if berry picking is planned in 20-25 days.

Features of agricultural technology

For early grapes, select a good place on the site and follow basic agricultural techniques.

Landing

It is advisable to plant bushes in the spring, eliminating the risk of freezing of the young vine. Best soils:

Poor soil is enriched by adding organic matter. Sunny, draft-free places are suitable for grapes. You cannot get a harvest in swampy, low-lying and overly saline areas.

The landing time in the middle zone is the beginning of May, in regions with more severe climatic conditions - the last week of May and the beginning of June. In the middle zone, the soils at depth are cold, so usually the root system of grapes is placed in the warm upper horizon (30-40 cm). Deep plantings are not suitable in these regions.

Care after landing

Main agrotechnical measures:

  • watering;
  • weeding and loosening;
  • mulching;
  • balanced feeding;
  • pruning and shaping bushes.

It is enough to follow the basic recommendations and you will definitely not be left without a harvest.

Watering

Young bushes are watered frequently, but weather conditions and the condition of the plants are taken into account. The white miracle requires moderate watering; when the berries ripen, they are completely stopped.

The average water requirement is 2-3 buckets for each bush, frequency is 2 times a week. The recommendations are conditional, since the regime depends on the weather and soil type. In inclement and rainy seasons, the irrigation scheme is adjusted, reducing the volume. At the stage of fruit formation, the water rate is increased. When the berries ripen and become full of sweetness, watering is reduced and eliminated altogether.

Feeding

On well-fertilized soils, young bushes are not fed. From the third season, nitrogen fertilizers (diluted mullein) are applied to the soil in the spring, then, after about 3-4 weeks, the plantings are fed with complex fertilizer.

After harvesting the berries, the vine needs additional nutrition. Add any compositions containing phosphorus and potassium. In autumn, nitrogen fertilizers are not used for grapes.

Formation of bushes

The variety requires pruning of young and excess shoots and the formation of a bush. With thickening and lack of pruning, productivity indicators sharply decrease, and there is a risk of infections.

The white miracle is pruned in the fall and forms a bush within 3-4 years. During this period, the plant takes on the correct shape; in the future, only pruning of diseased, frozen branches is required. 5-8 eyes are left on the branch, the total number of buds on the bush is 35-40. In spring, some branches are pruned before sap flows and buds begin to swell.

Pruning in the first year

In the fall, the shoot of the White Miracle is cut off into 2-4 buds. If there are two shoots on a seedling, then 2-3 buds are left on each.

Pruning in the second year

With proper care, by the fall of the second year, the bush will form 5-6 shoots. Of these, four strong and long shoots are left, removing the rest. Trimming - 3-4 eyes

Pruning in the third year

Usually in the third year the first signal berries are obtained from the White Miracle bush. The bush forms 4 trunks with young branches on which berries will grow.

In autumn, weak shoots are cut off, leaving two branches on each sleeve. One of the two is shortened (by three buds), it will be a replacement shoot. The second one has 8-10 eyes.

Starting from the fourth year, the vines that have produced a crop in the season are removed and the annuals are pruned. The fruit arrow will give clusters for the next season. The lower vine is left as a replacement shoot.

Preparing for winter

The variety is covered for the winter, having previously prepared the vine for the cold period. After picking the berries, the plantings are watered, trying to saturate the soil with moisture, but not to allow waterlogging. Watering increases the frost resistance of bushes.

The soil is spilled with a solution of potassium and phosphorus fertilizers, soaking to a depth of 20-30 cm. Excess shoots, dried and diseased sleeves, and unripe vines are trimmed.

Spare buds are left on the shoots (in case the vine freezes). Next, the shoots are removed from the supports, placed on stands made of boards, covered with spruce branches or non-woven material and wooden shields. It is recommended to first place small arcs of wire, then cover them with fabric or spruce branches. The ends of the shelters are left open, only when severe frosts set in are they completely insulated. In winter, snow will provide additional cover for the vine.

Storage conditions

The hybrid White Miracle is characterized by long-term storage of berries. When optimal conditions are created, the harvest is preserved for 1.5-2 months.

Brush storage options:

  • on supports in a suspended state;
  • in boxes or containers, sprinkled with sawdust or laid out with paper.

In the first case, you will need a warm and dry basement or attic. The brushes are hung at a distance from each other, not allowing them to touch. A film or burlap is spread below, onto which the fallen berries will fall off. When planning this method of storage, the brushes are cut off with part of the vine, leaving at least 9-10 cm of shoot. When picking, it is advisable to work with gloves and try to touch the berries as little as possible.

In boxes, grapes are well preserved in places protected from sunlight. Practice has shown that the berries do not lose their taste and juiciness for two months. Temperature: +1ºC…+8 ºC.

The fruits of the White Miracle are stored in special compartments of the refrigerator for up to 2-3 months. The berries are laid loosely, and stocks are regularly checked, removing spoiled specimens.

Grapes do not like proximity to other vegetables and fruits. When storing, there should be no potatoes, zucchini, or carrots next to the berries.

Even novice gardeners can grow the White Miracle grape variety. It is suitable for the middle zone, successfully bears fruit in harsh climates, giving an early abundant harvest.

Reviews

Nikolay, Istra district, Moscow region

This is the fifth year I have been growing Crystal and White Miracle on the plot. The bushes grow well and quickly emerge from wintering in the spring. In cold weather I cover it with spunbond, with snow on top. Last year there were the first signals, the berries are large, the White Miracle’s are especially tasty and sweet. I think I made the right decision by planting these two varieties.

I check many new varieties and choose the best. I can confidently say that the Phenomenon variety, like the White Miracle, is among my favorites. They don’t let you down in any season, they tolerate winter well, and they grow quickly. The white miracle lives up to its name, berries with a wonderful taste. I didn’t have much hope for these new products, since there are a lot of advertisements, but there is no sense. But in this case I’m happy, I plan to further increase the plantings.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Each winegrower, when choosing the next variety, first of all compares the pros and cons. The advantages of the White Miracle grape variety include:

  • excellent rootstock compatibility;
  • early ripening;
  • unpretentiousness in cultivation;
  • large bunches have an excellent presentation;
  • excellent keeping quality of ripe fruits;
  • grapevines have high frost resistance;
  • grapes are relatively resistant to many diseases characteristic of this crop;
  • versatility of use;

The only drawback of the Song grape variety is the fragility of the young shoots. However, from the second year of cultivation, the vines become flexible.

Important! The first clusters appear on the vines in the second or third year after planting the seedlings.

Reviews

Having bought a summer cottage, I began to plant it with various fruits and berries. When choosing grape cuttings, I was recommended the White Miracle variety, as it is excellent for beginners and has excellent taste.

I have been growing this variety commercially for more than 5 years. Since the grapes do not tolerate transportation well, the sale takes place in my hometown. Despite its small scale, the entire harvest sells out quickly and has long been loved by customers.

There are many grape plantations in our city and this, as a grape lover, makes me very happy. In my life I have probably tried most of the varieties. Of the white grapes, I especially liked White Miracle, and I try to buy it all the time.

Landing rules

The main feature of growing grapevines is the right location. And this grape variety is no exception.

The optimal timing for planting seedlings depends on the region. In the central regions, grapes can be planted at the end of April or in the first ten days of May. But in areas with more severe climatic conditions, you should not start planting before mid-May.

For planting, you need to set aside a lighted, well-windowed area. But at the same time, it is extremely undesirable to plant grapes in areas where drafts reign.

Territories where meltwater accumulates in the spring and rainwater stagnates in the summer and autumn are completely unsuitable for growing grapes. Close proximity to groundwater is also not the best option. Excess moisture is the first enemy of the grape root system.

Prepare the soil in advance for planting grape seedlings. Loose, fertile and well-permeable soil is ideal. You can prepare the following mixture in advance:

  • humus - 2 parts
  • ash – 1 part
  • sand - 1 part.

Mix the soil mixture well.

Advice! Despite excellent frost resistance, Song grapes still need shelter for the winter.

In the selected area, dig a planting hole of the required size. The main thing is that the root system is located freely in the hole. A drainage layer of broken brick, crushed stone or small stones is laid at the bottom of the planting pit. Subsequently, you need to make a small mound from the mixture prepared in advance. Place the roots of the grape seedling on it.

Gradually fill the seedling with soil mixture, compacting the soil around the seedling. After planting, seedlings need abundant watering. Don't forget to tie up the shoots and provide them with shade for 5-7 days.

Caring for seedlings after planting

To obtain abundant harvests, each crop must be given a lot of time and proper care. Grapes also need regular care.

Regular weeding, correct watering schedule, loosening, pruning and balanced fertilizing are a guarantee of good grapevine growth and high yield.

Provide the seedlings with moderate and regular watering. The average watering rate is 1-2 buckets of water for each bush 2-3 times a week, depending on the weather. In rainy summers, it is recommended to reduce watering. But in drought, plants will require much more moisture.

Advice! The White Miracle grape is a hybrid, so it can only be propagated by vegetative methods.

During fruit formation, it is necessary to increase the watering rate. But with the beginning of grape ripening, on the contrary, it should be reduced or eliminated altogether. Excessive moisture is the first reason for cracking of berries.

For prevention, the White Miracle variety must be sprayed with Bordeaux mixture twice during the season. This event will help protect grape bushes from many diseases.

A properly designed feeding scheme is another point in proper grape care. A week after planting, the seedlings need to be fertilized with nitrogen-based fertilizers. Twice during the season, feed the vines with complex mineral fertilizers. During the formation and ripening of grapes, fertilizer application should be abandoned.

After harvesting, be sure to apply fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium to help the plant regain strength after heavy fruiting and help the grape bushes fully prepare for winter.

Do not forget about such stages of care as pruning and shaping the vine. In the fall, when preparing grapes for winter, it is necessary to remove diseased, broken branches. Grapevines need to be formed in the spring, before active sap flow begins or during the season.

Professionals recommend leaving no more than 6-8 eyes on one shoot. The rest must be mercilessly broken out, since a large number of branches affects the yield reduction.

Advice! The minimum distance between grape bushes should be at least 1.5-2 m.

Features of care

Caring for this variety involves watering, timely application of fertilizers, pruning and preventive measures in the fight against diseases.

Watering

Additional soil moisture must be provided in a strictly defined amount. So it is better to start the first watering in May and use water with the addition of 0.5 wood ash. One bush usually requires up to 5 liters of water. It is recommended to repeat the second watering before flowering and also use water with ash.

Diseases and pests

This grape variety is highly resistant to many diseases, such as:

  • mildew;
  • oidium;
  • gray rot.

With regular preventive treatments, grapes will be protected from harmful bacteria and spores.

Their insect pests of the Song grape variety can only be threatened by wasps and bees, and then only during the period of fruit ripening. Therefore, to preserve the harvest, take care in advance of insect traps or mesh bags that protect the grapes from insects.

Storage conditions

Since the shelf life of White Miracle grapes is about 1.5-2 months, it is necessary to create favorable conditions in advance that will preserve the harvest. Ripe fruits can be stored hanging or in boxes and containers.

In the first case, the brushes are tied in pairs and suspended on a rope. It is advisable to hang the harvest in such a way that the brushes do not touch each other. You can store grapes in the attic or attic.

Ripe grapes are placed in one layer in containers or boxes lined with paper. Filled containers are stored in the basement for up to 2 months. Instead of paper, you can pour a thin layer of fine, dry sawdust into the boxes.

Important! The transportability of the White Miracle grape variety, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired. Due to the thin skin, the berries crack.

Judging by numerous reviews, the White Miracle grapes correspond to the description of the variety by the originators, which is confirmed by photos of the vine and ripe fruits. However, it is difficult to assess the taste of the fruit from photographs.

Professionals say that the ripening of grapes and the accumulation of sugar in the fruits begins in the second half of June. Winegrowers advise taking into account one more feature when growing this variety. In the first few years after planting, the growing season begins 2-3 weeks later than usual. After 3-4 years, the situation returns to normal, and the vines wake up in due time.

A brief description of the White Miracle grape will be presented by the author of the video:
