Diabolo bladderwort - a bright accent for your garden

An amazing plant called bladderwort has many varieties. The most beautiful are the viburnum-leaved varieties. Among them, gardeners distinguish two varieties that are most often used in landscape design. These are Diabolo and Diable D`Or. Mature shrubs are very similar in appearance. Reproduction of these species and care for them are absolutely the same. But there are some differences, which mainly relate to appearance.

Bladderwort variety Diabolo

Description of the Diablo bladderwort

The height of the Diablo bladderwrack bush reaches 3 meters. It has large foliage of a dark purple hue when grown in the sun; in the shade its color becomes greener with a reddish tint. In the autumn, the color of the leaves does not change, remaining the same. Due to the fairly close arrangement of the branches, the crown is formed compact and dense.

The flowering period of the bush begins in June. The snow-white inflorescences have a spherical shape. The flowers have fairly long pink stamens, which add fluffiness. This lasts about 14 days. Then berries appear that resemble bubbles. At first they are green in color, but then, as they ripen, they become red with a purple tint. It is the fruits that give this plant its name.

Another variety of bladderwort is Diablo Dora, somewhat smaller than the variety described above. This bush grows to a maximum height of 1.5 meters. The leaves are copper in color and gradually darken to purple as they grow, but are slightly lighter than Diablo. Its flowers are also white with long pink stamens.

Both subspecies have, even with minimal care, a beautiful decorative crown, which is widely used in landscape design.

general description

Bladderwort, ornamental varieties, photo, description, growing conditions, care

The viburnum-leaved bladdercarp diablo sometimes reaches three meters in height. The leaves of the crop have an attractive dark purple color. If it is planted in a shaded place, the foliage of the bladderwort will be green. In the autumn season, the leaves of the plant do not change color. During the flowering period, pink or white flowers form on the plant. It is noteworthy that this variety was awarded several awards from the Royal Gardening Association of England. This is explained by its excellent decorative qualities and low maintenance requirements.

These crops look very beautiful. There are no special problems with planting and caring for Diablo. In addition, the beautiful plant tolerates pruning. If you plant the crop in the right place, it will definitely please the eye during autumn leaf fall.

Planting a bladderwort

Before planting a plant, it is important to choose the right place and prepare it. It must be remembered that in shaded areas the leaves of the bush will become greener, and in sunny areas they will become brighter with a purple tint.

It is worth considering the location of groundwater. So, if they stand high, the bush will grow poorly or die altogether.

But the plant has no special preferences regarding the composition of the soil. Also, both varieties of Diablo thrive in polluted and dusty air, which makes them indispensable when planting along the road and along the perimeter of the garden plot.

Plant it in the simplest way. First, you need to prepare a hole taking into account the size of the roots of the bush (its diameter should be larger). The depth is chosen so that it is level with the neck of the barrel. Drainage and fertile soil plus a mixture of rotted manure with complex mineral fertilizer must be placed at the bottom.

Before planting in the ground, a plant brought from a nursery is soaked in water for 2-3 hours. Then the roots of the seedling are carefully laid out in the prepared place and soil is poured. It is worth trampling the soil around the trunk a little and watering it well. Since a young bush needs abundant and frequent watering, it is better to do it once every 2-4 days, depending on the drying of the top layer of soil.

It is important to mulch (cover) the tree trunk circle with sawdust or dry grass. This action improves air exchange of the roots and protects against rapid drying out, which will subsequently affect the health of Diablo.

When using bladderwort as a decorative hedge, the bushes are planted in a checkerboard pattern at intervals of at least 50 cm from each other.

How to propagate viburnum leaf carp

One more advantage of the viburnum leaf carp is often used: it is planted en masse in city parks and squares. Experts say that the viburnum leaf carp is very resistant to dust, exhaust gases and other environmental problems of large cities.

This is beneficial for us, amateur gardeners, because it is very easy to get planting material. No! God forbid! There is no need to go dig up planted plants in the park. But, it is quite acceptable to pinch off a twig from an adult plant, or better yet, wait until the utility workers trim the bush you have chosen (that’s exactly what I did).

Collect branches, cut them into cuttings with 2–3 buds and root until autumn in loose and constantly moist soil, in the shade, under a jar. Viburnum foliage takes root readily.

If there is a bush on your or a neighbor’s property, just bend the branch to the ground, sprinkle it or press it with a stone and do not forget to water this place constantly; by autumn there will already be roots.

It’s so easy to collect seedlings for an entire hedge, while preserving all the varietal qualities of the mother plant.

When grown as a hedge, I trim the vesicular carp at least twice a year. Early in the spring, before the buds open (of course, you will lose some of the flowers), and then as needed, taking into account the growth rate in specific conditions.

A large, overgrown bush can be divided. Either by completely digging up and dividing into parts, or directly in the ground, cutting off a part with a sharp shovel. It is better to do this in early spring, before the buds open, or in the fall, but a month before frost. To be honest, I do this in the summer, but quickly and choosing a cloudy weather period. Of course, after such an operation, both old and new bushes need to be provided with abundant and regular watering.

If suddenly (for a reason unknown to me) you want to propagate Viburnum foliage by seeds, then keep in mind that the seeds will require stratification (treatment with cold and moisture) and the likelihood of getting a plant with existing varietal characteristics is very low.

In my opinion, it is the leaves of the viburnum carp that represent its main value. Gardening: Flowers and Vegetables

Various bladderwort seedlings and features of their planting

There are 2 types of bladderwort seedlings; the method of planting them and the degree of survival also depend on this. Highlight:

  • With closed roots. In this case, the plant is grown in a special container and replanted using the transshipment method throughout the growing season. This is the most optimal option, as it guarantees almost 100% survival rate.
  • With an open root system. The bush is grown in the ground, and then dug up and sold. At the same time, a minimum of soil remains on the roots. Such plants can only be planted in early spring or autumn. Their survival rate is much worse than that of the first option.

How to plant bladderwort

The bladderwort will grow well both in sunny and shady places. If there is enough space on the site, then it is better to plant it in the sun because in the shade the leaves become faded over time. The soil should be well drained, without lime. On oily (fertile), loose soil, the plant will have a richer appearance. Although on poor soil, which is poor in nutrients, it also looks quite good.

The bladderwort is resistant to air pollution. This is the main reason why it is often planted along the edges of roads and along railway lines. Due to the fact that during seed propagation the original color of the plant leaves is only partially transmitted, preference is given to vegetative methods of propagation. Especially for this purpose, nurseries or centers that sell crops with a formed root system offer planting material in containers. It can be planted at any time during the growing season.

A shallow hole (up to 50 cm in both depth and width) is filled one third with humus or peat soil. The plant is carefully pulled out of the container and, without shaking off the earthen lump, placed in the prepared hole. Once the vesicular carp bush is secured, it is sprinkled with soil on top and buried a little. This is done in order to awaken the sleeping buds in the lower part of the plant and get additional shoots. After planting, the bush is watered abundantly with both water and the Kornevin biostimulator. Then, near the trunk of the plant, the ground is mulched with humus or dry grass, pine needles, straw.. Mulching has 2 goals: firstly, aeration of the root zone is ensured, since mulch prevents the formation of a surface crust, and secondly, moisture and nutrients will be retained in depth, nourishing unpretentious shrub

Proper care of the bladderwort, rules and nuances

This type of ornamental shrub is extremely easy to care for.

But in acidic loamy soil with good drainage, it takes root faster and grows better.

A grown and rooted plant is watered as needed, depending on weather conditions. For example, if the summer is rainy and cool, moisture obtained from the soil will be enough for it.

As a top dressing, you can use humus poured around the trunk. It is enough to carry out this procedure once per growing season.

In the spring, it is worth watering the plant with a solution of saltpeter or urea, prepared at the rate of: 20 grams of dry matter diluted in 1 bucket of water.

Nitrogen fertilizers enhance the growth of Diablo, and the bush will become more voluminous with a dense crown.

In autumn, you should give preference to mineral fertilizers based on potassium and phosphorus. For example, nitroammophoska, diluted in the same proportion as spring feeding. This feeding is important for the health of the bush.

Nuances of care

Caring for diabolo is quite simple. If optimal conditions are created for it, then even in the first year the crop will grow to 40-50 cm. It can live in one place for up to 30 years. The requirements for watering the bladderwort are as follows:

  • if the crop grows in a hot climate in loam, then it must be moistened twice a week;

  • In clay soil, it is better to avoid waterlogging, otherwise the roots will rot;
  • young seedlings should be watered as often as possible, because during this period they need a lot of moisture to adapt.

The bladderwort needs shaping and sanitary pruning. The sanitary procedure requires the removal of dead and dried branches. It is recommended to prune the plant for formation in autumn or spring. Thus, it is possible to achieve not only an improvement in the decorative properties of the crop, but also to activate its growth. The shrub takes well to pruning.

In Russia, this culture appeared only at the beginning of the 21st century. But even in such a short period of time, it managed to become very popular and took a worthy position in the field of landscape design.

Proper pruning of bladderwort

It is important to regularly prune the bush, this will allow you to form a correct and beautiful crown. They begin to prune branches from the 1st year of growth in a permanent place. This procedure is carried out quite simply: the outer parts of the branches are removed with a garden knife or a special pruner, which leads to stimulation of the growth of the side ones.

In the spring, before the start of the growing season, you need to use the same equipment to clean the bush of dried and damaged shoots. This will rejuvenate the bush and stimulate the growth of young branches.

You can form a crown using several of the most popular methods:

  • The shoots are cut at a distance of 50 cm from the trunk. With this method, a voluminous and lush appearance of the bush is achieved.
  • Selected several (5-8) strongest branches are cut off at a height of 1.5 meters. In this case, the crown is formed fountain-shaped, which gives additional unusualness to the plant.
  • Sometimes, even when growing in an area with a lot of sun, shoots with completely green leaves begin to appear on Diablo. They must be removed as close to the trunk as possible. Otherwise, the bush will lose its unusualness and attractiveness.

Trimming

Sometimes a bush does not fit into the surrounding landscape and its shape needs to be changed.

Diablo bladderwort tolerates pruning well. With its help, a crown is formed. They begin to do this in the first year of life. The tops of the branches are trimmed with pruning shears to encourage the growth of side shoots. They do this several times over the summer.

In the future, it is possible to create various shapes from the bush.

What will happen if you don’t trim the bush? It will grow old without producing new branches, and after a while it will become completely ugly.

How to propagate Diablo bladderwort

Any variety of red-leaved bladderwort can be grown in several ways. They include.

Growing from seeds

Least popular propagation method. This is due to the fact that seedlings often do not take the best external properties from the mother plant and as a result, a bush may grow that is very different from what was expected. It is important to stratify them before planting. That is, you need to organize an environment for their germination that will closely resemble the natural one.

Cuttings

It is better to root cuttings at the end of summer. To do this, take cut branches that have 2-3 or more anastomoses. The most favorable time for planting is early in the morning or evening, when there is no intense heat. The lower part of the shoot is cut at an angle of 45 °, and the upper part – horizontally. In this case, all the leaves are torn off. You should first soak the prepared trimmings in a special rooting solution.

Then they are planted in containers with sand and covered with plastic wrap. When young leaves appear, the insulation is removed, and the seedlings are moved into the ground to a selected place on the site. Before the onset of cold weather, it is worth insulating the plantings. To do this, use spruce branches or sawdust, which will prevent young bushes from freezing.

Layerings

This is the easiest way to propagate bladderwort. It is carried out as follows: in the spring, several shoots are selected, directed outward from the main trunk. All leaves are removed from them, then placed in the prepared groove and covered with soil. To strengthen them, they are attached to the ground with wooden or metal staples.

Ordinary hairpins work well for this. Pay great attention to watering. At the same time, it is important that it is sufficient, but not too abundant, otherwise the newly formed root system will begin to rot and the layering will die. By the beginning of autumn, you can carefully separate the new plant from the mother plant and transplant it to another place in compliance with all the rules.

Dividing the bush

The selected plant is dug up, divided into several parts with a sharp knife or shovel, each of which is then planted in a different place.

This manipulation is carried out in the spring before the leaves begin to bloom. After dividing, it is worth rinsing each individual bush in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. It is also important to cut all the branches on the plant by ½ so that all the energy goes into the formation of the root system, and not shoots with foliage. Water also as the top layer of soil dries.

Reproduction methods

Vegetative methods and sowing seeds are used to propagate Diablo vesiculus.

Growing from seeds

This method is the least common, since a new plant does not always inherit its parental varietal characteristics. Seed material is collected in the fall and kept in the refrigerator for a month for stratification. Sowed in spring or autumn.

Cuttings

From the moment the bush blooms, cuttings begin to be harvested:

  • cut off the shoots of the current season 10-20 cm long, with 2-3 internodes;
  • the leaves on the lower half are removed, and the upper ones are shortened by half;
  • To stimulate root formation, prepare a special solution according to the instructions and keep the prepared cuttings in it.

The workpieces are planted in a mixture of peat and sand. Water well and cover with plastic wrap. Further care until complete germination consists of timely moistening and ventilation. The cover is removed when new leaves appear, then transplanted to a permanent location.

Dividing the bush

Reproduction by dividing the bush is carried out in the spring, before the sap begins to flow, but experienced gardeners know how to plant bladderwrack in the summer. It is simply dug up and divided into several parts with a shovel or knife. For disinfection, sections are treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Do not delay planting bushes in a new place so that the roots do not dry out.

Layerings

In the spring, a healthy and powerful shoot is selected, which necessarily grows outward. All but the top few leaves are removed. A groove 10-12 cm deep is made nearby in the ground, the stem is placed in it, secured with a bracket and covered with soil.

The cuttings are watered more often than the mother bush, but water stagnation is not allowed.

By autumn the shoot will give roots, at which time it is cut off, replanted and covered for the winter.

Mr. Summer Resident informs: Diablo bladderwort - use in landscape design

Thanks to its beautiful decorative appearance and fairly rapid growth, the bladderwort has won a well-deserved place among plants used by landscape designers and amateur gardeners when designing plots.

If you plant it in the center of the lawn and give the crown a beautiful shape, it will be a highlight in the garden. Also, by combining several varieties of bladderwort in a hedge, you can give it an unusual look.

Its place in gardens and flower beds has another feature - it is practically not affected by pests and fungal diseases, to which most other plants are susceptible.

With proper care, it will delight its owners for a long time with its unusual and attractive appearance.

Rules for the formation of shrubs

The height that the bladderwort reaches in natural conditions is not always appropriate in landscape design or hedges. More attention is paid to its volume and density. To form a beautiful bush, you need to take care of this in advance, and not after its height has reached the desired height. In the first year, a small plant is pruned with pruning shears to increase branching and cause stronger vegetation. During the summer period it will be necessary to prune it several times, so quickly it becomes overgrown with young shoots. The easy portability of cardinal cuttings allows you to create all kinds of garden sculptures from adult vesicles.
