The best cabbage varieties for 2021 for different regions and conditions

Many gardeners like to plant various varieties of cabbage on their plots. This is a relatively unpretentious garden crop that does not require constant care.

Currently, not only the usual white cabbage beauty is planted in their beds, but also exotic kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower and Peking kohlrabi. Since breeders from all over the world are constantly working on growing new species that can grow in cold regions, this has become quite possible.

Therefore, white cabbage varieties are planted to be eaten throughout the entire period until the next harvest and for pickling. And the more exotic ones are planted to enjoy various delicacies.

The varieties of this crop differ in terms of ripening, regions of growth, and also in their taste characteristics. This is what our article today will be about.

Description of varieties and types of cabbage

Cabbage is a vegetable crop that does not require particularly complex cultivation techniques. And as already noted, it tolerates negative environmental factors quite easily. At the same time, it produces quite rich harvests. Taking into account the ripening time, the following groups are distinguished:

  • Early ripening – from 70 to 115 days
  • Mid-season - from 115 to 150 days
  • Late ripening – over 150 days

Varieties include cabbage, leaf, cauliflower, savoy, kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts. In general, there are about 90 different species.

This crop is biennial. In the first year, the formation and growth of leaves and heads of cabbage occurs. And in order to get seeds, the crop must grow in the second year.

Cauliflower is an exception in this case.

It should be noted that ordinary varieties can be grown to obtain seeds. And there are hybrids that are marked along with the name - the F1 mark. They are not suitable for collecting and storing seed material, and each time they need to be purchased anew.

The advantage of hybrids is large yields, which ripen earlier than usual and are better stored. However, their leaves may not be as soft and juicy, and many believe that hybrids are inferior in taste to non-hybrids. But they are less susceptible to adverse weather conditions and pests.

Let's look at which varieties and hybrids are the best in a particular classification and variety.

Recommendations for growing crops

Caring for late cabbage is not much different from growing other varieties. The main nuances are related to the length of the growing season. Heads of cabbage ripen longer and require more nutrients.

Landing procedure and preparation for it

Since most varieties of late-ripening cabbage take about five to six months from the moment sprouting from seeds to the ripening of heads of cabbage, in temperate climates it is grown exclusively as seedlings. In Russia, seeds can be planted directly into the ground only in southern regions with a subtropical climate.

Modern varieties and hybrids have good immunity, but in general cabbage is prone to attack by pathogenic fungi. To avoid this, the seeds undergo special preparation before planting. To disinfect, they are immersed in hot (45–50ºC) water for a quarter of an hour, then in cold water for just a couple of minutes. Another option is dressing in a fungicide of biological origin (Alirin-B, Maxim, Planriz, Ridomil-Gold) or in a bright pink solution of potassium permanganate. To increase germination, use any biostimulants (potassium humate, Epin, Emistim-M, Zircon). The solution is prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions, the seeds are immersed in it for 10–12 hours.

Potassium permanganate solution is one of the most common disinfectants; soaking cabbage seeds in it is an effective prevention of fungal diseases

The optimal time for planting late cabbage for seedlings is the end of March or the beginning of April. The seedlings are transferred to the ground in the first half of May, and the harvest is harvested in October. In the southern regions, all these dates are postponed 12–15 days ago. These varieties and hybrids are not afraid of autumn frosts, and negative temperatures do not affect keeping quality.

Any cabbage tolerates transplanting and picking very poorly. Therefore, they plant it immediately in small peat pots. The soil is a mixture of humus, fertile soil and sand in approximately equal proportions. To prevent fungal diseases, add a little crushed chalk or wood ash. Before planting, the substrate is well moistened. The seeds are buried 1–2 cm, sprinkled with a thin layer of fine sand on top.

Cabbage planted in peat pots can be transferred to the garden bed without removing it from the container.

Until the shoots emerge, the containers are kept in a dark, warm place under film or glass. Typically, seeds germinate in 7–10 days. Seedlings need to be provided with 10–12 hours of daylight. The temperature in the first 5–7 days is lowered to 12–14ºС, then raised to 16–18ºС. The substrate is constantly maintained in a moderately moist state, but is not flooded (this is fraught with the development of “black leg”).

Cabbage seedlings require fairly low temperatures for proper development.

In the phase of the second true leaf, cabbage is fed with mineral nitrogen fertilizers (2–3 g per liter of water). After another week, it is watered with a solution of a complex product for seedlings (Rostock, Mortar, Kristalin, Kemira-Lux). About a week before transplanting into the ground, cabbage begins to be hardened off, making it easier for it to adapt to new conditions. Seedlings ready for planting reach a height of 17–20 cm and have 4–6 true leaves.

Do not hesitate to plant cabbage seedlings in the ground: the older the plant, the worse it takes root in the new place

The bed is prepared in advance, choosing an open place. Even light partial shade is not suitable for the culture. Due to the high humidity of the air and soil, any lowlands are excluded. Don't forget about crop rotation. Cabbage grows best after beets, herbs, legumes and nightshades. “Relatives” from the Cruciferous family are undesirable as predecessors.

To grow cabbage, choose an open place well warmed by the sun.

Cabbage needs light, but nutritious soil. It categorically does not tolerate acidic and saline substrates. When digging, humus or rotted compost, dolomite flour, phosphate and potassium fertilizers (can be replaced with sifted wood ash) must be added to the soil. In the spring, 10–15 days before planting, the bed is well loosened and mineral nitrogen fertilizers are added.

Humus is an effective means of increasing soil fertility

The holes are well watered before planting cabbage. It is imperative to adhere to the planting pattern (at least 60 cm between plants and 60–70 cm between rows) so that each head of cabbage has sufficient area for feeding. The seedlings are transferred to a permanent place along with the pot. A little humus, a teaspoon of superphosphate and onion peels are placed at the bottom of the hole to repel pests. The cabbage is buried down to the first pair of leaves, watered abundantly again, and mulched. Until it begins to grow, a canopy of white covering material is built over the bed. Or each seedling is separately covered with spruce branches or paper caps.

Cabbage seedlings are planted in holes that have been generously spilled with water, almost in the “mud”

Late cabbage seeds are planted in open ground at the end of April or at the beginning of May. The earth at a depth of 10 cm should warm up to at least 10–12ºС. When planting, follow the pattern; place 3-4 seeds in each hole. They are sprinkled with peat chips or humus on top (layer 2–3 cm thick).

Cabbage (both seeds and seedlings) is planted in the ground, providing the plants with sufficient area for nutrition

Before emergence, the bed is covered with plastic film. Then they tighten it with covering material on the arches. After a month, the cover can be removed for a day, and after another 1.5–2 weeks, it can be removed completely. In the phase of the second true leaf, culling is carried out, leaving one seedling in each hole. “Unnecessary” ones are cut off with scissors or pinched close to the ground.

Late cabbage seeds are planted in open ground only if the climate in the region allows.

Water the seedlings moderately. Plain water can be alternated with a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate. To protect against fungal diseases, cabbage is dusted with crushed chalk or colloidal sulfur. The soil in the garden bed is sprinkled with a mixture of ash, tobacco chips and ground pepper. This will help repel many pests.

Further care

Late cabbage, like its other varieties, is regularly loosened and the bed is weeded. You need to be very careful with loosening, not going deeper than 10 cm. About three weeks after planting, it is hilled up to stimulate the development of a larger number of adventitious roots. The procedure is repeated after another 10–12 days and immediately before the leaves close into a continuous carpet. The shorter the stem, the more often the plants need to be hilled.

Ideally, the cabbage bed should be loosened after each watering - this promotes aeration of the roots and prevents moisture from stagnating in the soil

The main component of caring for cabbage is proper watering. It especially needs moisture during August, during the formation of heads of cabbage. Newly planted seedlings are watered every 2–3 days, using 7–8 liters of water per 1 m². After 2–3 weeks, the intervals between procedures are doubled, and the norm is increased to 13–15 l/m². The soil must be wetted to a depth of at least 8 cm. Of course, the frequency of watering greatly depends on the weather. In hot weather, cabbage is watered daily or even twice a day, early in the morning and late in the evening. You can also additionally spray the leaves and heads of cabbage.

Cabbage is a moisture-loving crop, this applies to both newly planted seedlings and adult plants.

It is not advisable to pour water directly under the roots. In cabbage, they are located very close to the soil surface, quickly become bare and dry out. It is better to water it using furrows between the rows. If technically possible, organize sprinkling (cabbage loves it very much) and drip irrigation. These methods allow you to evenly wet the soil.

It is strictly forbidden to alternate long periods of drought with rare, very abundant watering. This is the main reason for cracking of heads of cabbage.

About a month before harvest, watering is reduced to the required minimum. In this case, the cabbage will become juicier and gain the inherent sugar content of the variety.

The growing season of late cabbage is long, so it requires more fertilizing per season than early and mid-ripening varieties. They begin to apply fertilizers simultaneously with the first hilling. Any nitrogen-containing products are suitable - ammonium sulfate, urea, ammonium nitrate. They are embedded in the ground at a rate of 10–15 g/m² or diluted in 10 liters of water. A month later the procedure is repeated.

Urea, like other nitrogen-containing fertilizers, stimulates cabbage to actively increase green mass

Cabbage has a very positive attitude towards any organic fertilizer. An excellent top dressing is an infusion of fresh cow manure, bird droppings, nettle greens, and dandelion leaves. Cabbage is watered with it two to three times during the summer at intervals of a month. Before use, the infusion must be filtered and diluted with water in a ratio of 1:15 (if it is litter) or 1:10 when using any other raw material. Complex fertilizers are no worse - Multiflor, Clean Leaf, Gaspadar, Agricola, Zdraven.

Nettle infusion is a very useful and completely natural fertilizer.

Cabbage needs nitrogen, but only in the first half of the growing season. In this case, you should strictly follow the recommended dosage. Its excess negatively affects the plant’s immunity and promotes the accumulation of nitrates in the leaves.

As soon as the head of cabbage begins to form, they switch to potash and phosphorus fertilizers. Before harvesting, late cabbage is watered 1–2 times with a solution of superphosphate and potassium sulfate (25–30 g per 10 liters of water). Or you can add wood ash to the base of the stem every 1.5–2 weeks. An infusion is prepared from it (half a liter jar with 3 liters of boiling water).

Wood ash is a natural source of potassium and phosphorus, especially necessary for late cabbage during the ripening of heads of cabbage.

Don’t forget about foliar feeding. Cabbage reacts especially negatively to boron and molybdenum deficiency in the soil. During the season, it is sprayed 2-3 times with a solution of microelements - 1-2 g of potassium permanganate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, boric acid, ammonium molybdate per liter of water.

Video: caring for late cabbage after planting in the ground

The crop is harvested only when it reaches full maturity. Unripe heads of cabbage are stored much worse. Most varieties and hybrids tolerate slight negative temperatures without damage, so it is better to wait until harvesting. Most often, late cabbage ripens in the first half of October, less often at the end of September.

Experienced gardeners advise cutting the stem 2-3 weeks before harvest, cutting it by about a third, and slightly loosening the plant in the soil. The heads of cabbage will no longer be supplied with nutrients, will increase in size, and will definitely not crack.

Cabbage must be pulled out by the roots. You can even store it just like that, “transplanting” it into a box with damp peat or sand. But in this case it takes up quite a lot of space.

Heads of cabbage intended for long-term storage are carefully inspected, rejecting those that show even the slightest suspicious damage. The stalk is cut with a sharp, clean knife, leaving at least 4–5 cm. Two or three outer leaves also do not need to be removed. All sections are treated by sprinkling with activated carbon powder, colloidal sulfur, and cinnamon.

Cabbage intended for long-term storage is carefully selected

Before storing cabbage, the cellar or basement must be disinfected by wiping all surfaces with a solution of slaked lime. The heads of cabbage are laid out in one layer on shelves covered with shavings, sawdust, straw, sand, and scraps of newsprint so that they do not come into contact with each other. To prevent the development of fungal diseases, it is recommended to dust them with crushed chalk or wood ash.

To save space, the heads of cabbage are tied by the stalks in pairs and hung on a wire or rope stretched from the ceiling. In this case, it is also advisable that they do not touch each other.

This unusual way of storing cabbage saves space in the cellar.

Even the best varieties and hybrids of late cabbage will not last long if you do not provide them with suitable conditions. Cabbage is stored in a dark place with good ventilation at a temperature of 2–4ºС and air humidity of 65–75%.

The best varieties of early and earliest cabbage

Early cabbage is grown using the seedling method. To get an early harvest, many sow it for seedlings at the end of January - February, the deadline is the beginning of March. We have already discussed how to plant it so that it grows strong and healthy in one of our articles.

In this section we will consider the main varieties with a description of the characteristics and some photographs.

White cabbage

  • "June". It matures in 90 days; after 60-65 days, you can remove the heads of cabbage, which weigh about 2 kg. Tolerates frost down to 5 degrees. But it is susceptible to cracking. It has a beautiful appearance - in cross section the upper leaves are green, slightly yellowish inside. It has a high content of vitamin B and other beneficial vitamins and microelements.
  • "Parel F1" requires about 95 days, and in ideal conditions the harvest can be expected 56 days after planting in open ground. Very similar to “Iyunskaya”, however, the weight of the heads of cabbage is slightly less, only up to 1.5 kg. Rich in vitamin C. It has a short shelf life, but may not lose its appearance and taste for up to two weeks, provided it is in the garden. Developed by Dutch breeders and has an excellent slightly sweet taste.
  • “Golden Hectare” grows in no more than 100 days. Seed germination reaches 90%. Weight varies from 2 to 3 kg. Good for salads and dishes that use fresh vegetables. But despite all the advantages, it does not lie well and is sensitive to the soil - it does not like heterogeneous and acidic soil.

Among the early varieties, it is also worth highlighting “Kazachok”, “Ditmarskaya rannyaya”, “Dita”, “Copenhagen Market”, “Transfer”, “Dumas”, “Malachite”, “Zarya”, as well as “Rinda”, “Tobia”, “ Zantoriya", "Express", "Taurus".

Broccoli

  • "Batavia F1" is an early hybrid. After planting 30-day-old seedlings, they have time to ripen in 60-68 days. The heads are quite large and weigh over 1 kg, and are well divided into inflorescences. It does not crack and easily tolerates growing in particularly poor conditions. It can also be planted without seedlings; for this, it is planted in the southern regions directly into the ground in the third decade of April.
  • “Vitaminnaya” grows in 72-90 days. The fruits are not large - up to 300 g maximum. If you don’t get the harvest right, they become soft and crumbly.
  • For Curly Head, it takes about 90 days from the time the seeds germinate until the harvest ripens. The head is medium, weighing up to 500 grams. Used for long-term storage, unpretentious.

It is also worth noting cabbage such as “Yunga F1”, “Linda”, “Green Magic F1”, “Vyarus”, “Iperator”, “Fiesta”, “Sebastian”, “Russian size”, “Romanesco”. The last three varieties have a head weight of over 1.5 kg.

Colored

  • “Express MS” is a productive variety that produces fruits in 100-104 days. Heads weighing up to 480 g. When planted densely, it is not inferior in taste and yield to its closest competitors. But it is susceptible to pest damage and has low cold resistance. Can be transported, but storage conditions are not long-term.
  • “Snow Globe” matures after planting 40-day-old seedlings in 60-65 days. The fruit itself weighs up to 1.2 kg. Similar to Express, but has strong immunity to pests and diseases. It also tolerates bad weather conditions well. From 1 sq. m. you can harvest up to 2 kg of crop.
  • “Dachnitsa” has a longer ripening period – 80-100 days. Head up to 1 kg, containing a lot of vitamin C and glucose. Loves a loose fit and has the greatest shelf life. A special feature is that during the entire ripening period the leaves carefully cover the head, which allows you to obtain pure snow-white fruits.

Varieties of early cauliflower also include “Movir”, “Francoise”, “Yarik”, “Moscow Ultra”, “Garantiya”, Polar Star”, “Tsendis”. They all have approximately the same growing season and have good yields.

Savoy

  • “Golden Early” usually requires 105-110 days from germination to obtain a good harvest. A head of cabbage weighing up to 800 g is resistant to cracking. Tolerates mild cold and drought well. Used fresh and boiled, and also as a filling for pies.
  • "Nyusha" has gray-green leaves that make up a medium-density, pointed head, weighing up to 1 - 2 kg. Allows you to have a harvest of up to 3.3 kg per square meter. The variety is early, the growing season of which is only 55 - 60 days. Plant seedlings in the first ten days of March, plant in open ground in the first ten days of May. Harvest at the end of June or July.

You can also consider such early representatives of the Savoyard lace beauty - “Early Viennese”, “Komparsa”, “Jubilee”, “Mira”, “Moscow Lacemaker”, “Petrovna”.

Beijing

  • “Richie F1” is a hybrid that ripens after seedlings are planted in the ground in about 40 days. Therefore, it is often sown immediately in open ground. Due to the special tenderness of lettuce leaves, it cannot be stored for long. The weight of heads of cabbage often reaches 2.5 kg.
  • “Vesnyanka” after planting seedlings in the ground requires no more than 35 days to ripen. Not inclined to shoot. Contains a large amount of vitamin C, so it is great for salads. Not recommended for long-term storage.

Early representatives of the species also include “Cha cha”, “Yukki F1”, Manoko F1”, “Beijing broadleaf”.

Features of early ripening cabbage

Early ripening vegetables have a short growing season. There are even ultra-early ripening varieties of cabbage. This leads to the ripening of a full-fledged harvest at the beginning of summer. In areas with the most favorable climate, perhaps even earlier, at the end of May.

Due to the rapid ripening period, representatives, including super-early varieties of cabbage, do not grow to the largest sizes. Heads of cabbage are usually compact and looser. Therefore, they are susceptible to cracking and damage; early varieties of white cabbage are not suitable for long-term storage.

On a note!

Planting early cabbage does not require a lot of space on the plot. But good watering and fertilizing are required to enhance growth so that the fruits ripen by the time promised by the producers.

The early vegetable has a wonderful taste. True, early cabbage usually cannot boast of the variety of taste that mid- and late-ripening varieties have. But the fruits contain a lot of vitamins and microelements. Doesn't last long. Suitable for fresh consumption only because the leaves have a high water content. They make delicious fresh salads.

Mid-season varieties with descriptions of characteristics

White cabbage

  • “Moskovskaya late 9 and 15” have dense large heads of cabbage up to 5 kg. “Moskovskaya late 15” requires a neutral soil composition, and “Moskovskaya late 9” requires an acidic soil composition. When growing conditions are met, they produce a very bountiful harvest. Not used for storage, but great for pickling.
  • Stone Head requires only 125 days to harvest. Heads of cabbage weighing up to 6 kg (from 1 square meter - up to 11 kg). It is resistant to cracking and tolerates both light frost and dry and hot summers. It is mainly used immediately for salads, but due to its long shelf life (until March) it can be stored for the winter.

It is worth considering such popular types as “Megaton”, “Atria”, “Merchant’s Wife”, “Sugar Loaf”, “Slava”, “Krasnodarskaya”. The best are also “Gift” and “Menza”. They are distinguished by their large head weight and high yield. Thus, “Menza” produces heads of cabbage weighing 9 kg.

You can also include “Hydra” and “Glass” in this list.

Late cabbage

Fresh cabbage is good in any dish, as well as boiled and stewed. Fermented and soaked dishes are necessary on tables in autumn and winter. The amount of useful substances in them is enormous. The best-tasting pickles will be made from late vegetables.

Important! Late varieties are characterized by the most impressive fork sizes - up to 10 kg. Their taste improves with storage. They have a very dense structure, as they can be stored until the next harvest.

Familiar and very common varieties of Soviet selection such as Amager 611, Kharkovskaya Zimnyaya, Moskovskaya Pozdnyaya, Old varieties are reliable, but have many disadvantages:

  • susceptibility to disease;
  • low yield;
  • mediocre taste.

There are new hybrids on sale that have significantly better characteristics.

The ripening times for late vegetables vary:

  • late (late ripening);
  • from late to very late;
  • very late.

The first group includes:

  • Amrak hybrids;
  • Dominant;
  • Counter;
  • Lennox;
  • Paradox;
  • varieties Moskovskaya late 15;
  • Moskovskaya late 9;
  • Wintering;
  • Amager 611;
  • Crewmont;
  • Kharkov winter high-yielding, with high-density plugs.

Kolobok F1 is the most popular hybrid. More than 30 tons of its seeds are sold annually in the country, which is almost half of the total production. The advantages include excellent taste and high yield of 86–100 t/ha. It produces dense plugs weighing 4.2 kg, is suitable for cultivation in all regions of the country, and can be stored until May next year.

Amager 611 is unsurpassed in its characteristics, included in the State Register in 1943. The first domestic variety bred for industrial production. Its advantages include good shelf life, resistance to cracking, and transportability. Sturdy forks weigh 2.6–3.6 kg.

The vegetable was specially bred for winter storage. The taste when harvested is satisfactory, but it improves significantly with long-term storage.

Disadvantages: low yield 35–60 t/ha, susceptibility to diseases during development and during storage.

There are only two hybrids from late to very late ripening: Kronos and Expect. They have heads weighing up to 3 kg, good taste and stable yields on average up to 60 t/ha.

There are quite a lot of late varieties and hybrids, but they are often limited to certain climatic conditions and adapted for growing in a particular region. The exception is the Valentina hybrid.

Valentina F1 – used fresh and for long-term storage. The gray-green, obovate head weighing 3.2–3.8 kg has an excellent taste. Productivity 68–80 t/ha.

  • "Nika" is a hybrid that is especially resistant to shooting. Compared to other species, the leaf blades are highly wrinkled. Head weight up to 3 kg.

It can be consumed not only fresh, but also fermented.

White cabbage for open ground, the best varieties for storage

Just like pickling, many are also interested in the duration of storage. Agree that having harvested, say, 20-30 heads of cabbage, we will want to save them so that we can try fresh cabbage in the winter. And if it is not stored for long, then where will we put this large harvest?

The same late varieties that are subject to pickling are suitable for long-term storage. Some of them were discussed above. But there are a number of others that fit these purposes.

Snow White

This late-ripening variety was bred back in Soviet times, but despite this, it is still popular with most gardeners. From the appearance of the first shoots to the harvest, 4 to 5 months pass. Ripens in any weather, the heads of cabbage are round, dense and weigh from 2.5 to 4 kg. Do not crack. The variety has good resistance to both fusarium and mucous bacteriosis. But does not tolerate acidic soil.

Valentina F1

Unlike the previous ones, the Valentina variety is young. But despite this, it is quite famous among gardeners. Shelf life 7 months. The heads of cabbage are ovoid, dense, weighing up to 4 kg. It takes about 6 months from the appearance of the first shoots to harvest.

To taste, cabbage is crispy and sugary, so it is simply suitable for fermentation.

Kolobok

Another popular hybrid variety. Of Russian origin, bred for all regions of Russia. After the appearance of the first shoots and before harvesting, 5 months pass. The heads of cabbage are round, dense, weigh about 5 kg, and do not crack.

Langedijker

Variety of Dutch origin. It takes up to 6 months from the appearance of the first shoots to harvest. Resistant to major diseases and have a long shelf life. They do not deteriorate during transportation.

Mom F1

Locally grown hybrid. Best suited for the Volga region. The structure of the heads of cabbage is not dense, but they are stored for about 6 months.

It takes about 6 months from the first shoots to harvest. The heads of cabbage are not perfectly round, but slightly flattened, weighing about 2.5 kg.

Megaton F1

The variety is famous among gardeners throughout the country. Bred in Holland. The ripening period is about 4.5 months. The heads of cabbage are dense and weigh up to 4 kg.

Among the advantages are excellent taste, high yield, resistance to most diseases, as well as pests. Heads of cabbage can be stored for up to 2.5 months.

Mara

Belarusian variety, which ripens 6 months after germination. The heads of cabbage are dense, weighing up to 4.5 kg. The yield is about 19 kg per square meter.

Reviews

Irina, Omsk : I’ve been planting the Slava variety for 2 years now, I’m very pleased. The heads of cabbage tie together, gain weight well, and do not crack even if the weather is rainy. I like the taste - it is slightly sweet, the leaves are juicy, not hard, but at the same time crispy. This sauerkraut is very tasty. You can prepare dishes and salads from it.

Maria Prishib, Bataysk : I chose the Gift variety for myself. In May, I immediately sow the seeds in open ground - germination is good, the seedlings are strong. They grow quickly and are practically immune to disease (if you pay minimal attention to prevention). Cabbage stores well, although it is inferior in this regard to late varieties.

Which cabbage varieties to choose for planting in open ground for the Urals

The Urals, like Siberia, are a region with harsh conditions. It is common here to grow in greenhouses. However, it is possible to plant seedlings in open ground. To do this, it is necessary to select appropriate varieties and adhere to favorable conditions.

The optimal time for planting seedlings in open ground is the beginning of June, when the temperature reaches above zero day and night.

Most of the varieties listed in the section above and intended for cultivation in Siberia are well suited for the Urals. The climatic conditions here are almost the same.

Dear friends, as you have probably noticed, there are quite a few varieties of cabbage for planting. And we looked at most of them today. Of course, we were unable to adequately describe them all within the framework of one article. But thanks to that minimal knowledge, now when you go to a planting material store you can ask for what you need.

All additional information on planting dates, growing season and basic characteristics are described on each of the seed bags. Therefore, there is no need to memorize everything written here.

I hope that today's article will be useful to you. All the best to you, and great harvests to everyone!

Benefits of growing white cabbage

The main advantage of growing the crop is its amazing cold resistance, which makes it possible to obtain a decent harvest in any weather conditions. Seedlings that have undergone hardening do not die when the temperature drops to -4-6 °; the growing season continues at positive temperatures close to zero. The optimal growing temperature is considered to be 18-20°.

Cabbage contains a set of microelements (Ca, Mg, K, Fe) and vitamins of different groups. It has an important property - vitamins are preserved after fermentation by natural fermentation. White cabbage has been grown since ancient times throughout the world. In Russia, it occupies up to a quarter of all areas allocated to garden crops. White cabbage goes through a full growing season in 2 years. In the first season it produces a head of cabbage, seeds from varietal crops are obtained the next year.

The basic requirements of agricultural technology are high soil moisture (75%) and air, adequate drainage. High temperatures harm cabbage; in heat of 35°, the fruits are small and often do not form at all.

Cabbage plantings are weakly or not at all affected by bacteriosis, clubroot, and fomoz, and forks collected in October-November are well preserved until June, without being damaged by mold and necrosis.

Cold-resistant varieties

White cabbage is famous for its resistance to cold; high yields of this crop can be obtained in the northernmost regions. Well-rooted, powerful adult rosettes of late varieties are able to withstand strong drops in temperature and even frost, “moving away” from the root on fine days. Young, poorly rooted seedlings are more susceptible to the negative effects of low temperatures, so to successfully obtain an early harvest, it is worth choosing the most cold-resistant varieties and hybrids.

Cossack F1

White cabbage variety Kazachok F1
