Description and characteristics

The royal mushroom is easily recognized by the yellow or orange color of the cap. Mushroom pickers often confuse it with the poisonous fly agaric, although there are no characteristic white spots on its surface. When it rains, these flakes are washed off from fly agaric mushrooms, which makes these 2 mushrooms similar. Unripe fruits in cross section resemble pale toadstool. It develops inside a white ovoid shell, which encircles the stem of ripe fruits. In the middle of this part of the mushroom there is a not very well defined ring.

The leg is yellow. It has a club-shaped shape. This part of the Caesar mushroom is strong and fleshy. Its dimensions can vary from 5 to 20 cm. Its diameter ranges from 1.5 to 5 cm. As it ages, the cap becomes duller. Medium-sized fruits have the best taste.

In young fruits, the shape of the cap is hemispherical. It then flattens out, resembling a slightly convex disc. The hymenophore is distinguished by the presence of many orange or yellow plates. A ripe egg mushroom has dense and juicy white flesh. The surface layer may be yellowish.

Where does Caesar mushroom grow?

It is difficult to list all the regions where the Caesar mushroom grows, because... it is extremely common in nature. More often it is found in deciduous forests. It prefers well-lit places under hazel, oak and birch trees. Caesar's fly agaric bears fruit better in acidic soils. It is most often found in areas with temperate climates.

The royal fly agaric is often found in Spain, France, Germany and Italy. In these countries, this variety is highly valued by nutritionists and chefs. It is often found in the deciduous forests of Crimea and Transcarpathia.

It is also found in African rainforests. There are mushroom places where this variety is found in the Far East. In the West and East, this species looks the same, but its name changes depending on the region. The fruiting period begins in mid-summer and ends in October-November.

Regarding the preparation of royal champignons, there are the following tips and recommendations:

  • When stored for a long time, royal champignons become softer, and their legs become covered with dark spots. This is due to the fact that choline accumulates in them, which can cause harm. Therefore, it is necessary to choose mushrooms that look firm and are not wrinkled or slippery.
  • If mushrooms are contaminated, under no circumstances should they be immersed in water or rinsed abundantly. They will absorb the liquid like a sponge and literally turn into a slimy mass.
  • Instead of rinsing, remove dirt from the surface of the king mushrooms using a damp cloth, rag or thick paper towel. It is necessary to carefully wipe the royal champignons, trying not to press too hard. After cleaning, you should rub them with a dry cloth or paper towel to dry them so they don't get too wet.
  • The stems of large king mushrooms are theoretically edible, but in fact they can be very tough and fibrous. Therefore, it is recommended to cut and discard them at the mushroom preparation stage. The only successful use of the legs may be to flavor broths.
  • On the inside of the caps, king mushrooms have large plates that can sometimes release dark liquid when cooked. This causes the whole dish to turn a dirty brown color. To avoid this undesirable effect, you can cut off the plates of the largest mushrooms in advance. The easiest way is to use a teaspoon for this purpose.
  • For grilling, barbecuing, and pan-searing, choose mushrooms that are the same size and shape so that they cook at the same speed.
  • To bake mushrooms, you need a baking sheet with high edges, since a lot of liquid can leak out.
  • You can prepare various dishes from royal champignons with any herbs - both classic parsley and green onions, dill, thyme or basil. They go well with all types of greens.

Differences from poisonous mushrooms

Inexperienced mushroom pickers can make a fatal mistake. Caesar mushroom looks very similar to the poisonous fly agaric. Without certain knowledge it will not be possible to distinguish them. Main differences:

  • The cap of a poisonous fly agaric with white growths, the Caesar's fly agaric has a smooth cap.
  • The plates on the leg of the fly agaric are white, while those of the royal mushroom are bright yellow.
  • The cover resembles an egg shell; in the fly agaric, the fragments in the lower part of the leg have a ring-shaped residue at the base.

Small poisonous fly agarics do not always have white dots on their caps; in this case, you need to pay attention to other signs. If there is any doubt about whether a mushroom is edible, it is better not to risk your health and leave it in the forest.

The little Caesar's fly agaric bears a resemblance to the toadstool . It is easy to distinguish them: if you cut off the cap of a toadstool, it will be white; the cap of the edible fly agaric has a yellow tint.
