Bulbous crops: tulips, daffodils, snowdrops, irises
First of all, in early October, bulbous plants are planted: tulips, daffodils, small-bulbous plants - muscari, pushkinia, galanthus (snowdrops), etc.

Optimal times for planting bulbous flowers:
- for tulips - September-early October
- for daffodils - September-early October
- for hyacinths - late October - early November
- for lilies - from the end of August - to October
- for crocuses - September-early October
- for small-bulbous plants (Scylla, Muscari, Pushkinia, Chionodoxa, Kandyki, Chionodoxa, Corydalis) - September - early October
- for imperial hazel grouse - September-October

Planting for all bulbs is standard: it is useful to make a substrate of sand under the bulb and plant the bulbs to a depth of three heights. When planting VERY late on already frozen ground: slightly increase the planting depth, and mulch the top of the planting with oak leaves, cover with lutrasil or spruce branches.
Transplanting and dividing perennials
In September-October, cuttings of perennials are still actively sold. Of course, it would be best to plant them at the end of August - at the beginning of September, but our winters in recent years have become such that it will not be critical to plant them at the end of September - at the beginning of October. It is useful to mulch late-planted perennials with peat or humus on top.
Annual and perennial flowers for winter sowing
List of annuals that can be sown before winter: kochia, calendula, snapdragon, allisum, annual poppy, eschscholzia, lupine, clarkia, nasturtium, summer adonis, common agrostemma, blue cornflower, graceful gypsophila, Iberis umbellata, gaillardia, three-month-old lavatera, nigella sowing, cosmos, etc.
List of biennials that can be sown before winter: matthiola (feverfew), rosehock (mallow, or mallow), Turkish cloves
Self-sowing is given by: nasturtium, calendula, petunia (seedlings bloom only in August-September), feverfew (mattricaria), Turkish carnation (over time, the color of the flowers changes and mixes, the characteristics of the variety are lost).
List of perennials that can be sown before winter: peonies, hellebores, corydalis, primroses, phlox, decorative onions, rudbeckia, echinacea.
Self-seeding of perennials and small-bulbous plants: It is interesting that not only annuals, but also some bulbous and rhizomatous perennials self-seeding. In this way, small-bulbous plants can spread throughout the area: pushkinia, chionodoxa and perennials: common primrose, violets, lupins, rudbeckias. For example, the caped violet is a real scourge of all areas: once you plant it, you are doomed to run after it throughout the entire dacha! However, it’s the same story with sorrel.
Winter sowing technology
Only cold-resistant crops that can easily withstand spring frosts can be sown before winter. Warm-loving crops may die in the spring, immediately after germination.
Beautifully flowering annuals can be sown in October-November . It is better to prepare the area for sowing in advance: it should be a fairly high place, but melt water should not wash away the seeds. It is more convenient to sow annual plants in special shrublets or containers that can be buried in the garden, and in May - June the young plants are planted in flower beds.
Before sowing in advance at the end of September - at the beginning of October, apply complex fertilizer to the planting site.
sowing seeds before winter
Sow the seeds on frozen soil, otherwise they will germinate in the fall and die. Mulch the top of the planting site with peat or humus.

What flowers should I plant in October?
The choice of garden flowers that can be planted in the fall is huge. By planting annual plants, you can get them to bloom a couple of weeks earlier in the spring. In addition, planting in the fall will harden the flowers and make them more resistant to diseases and pests. Just like with vegetable seeds, when planting flowers it is important not to rush so that the sprouts do not sprout in the current season. The furrows are prepared in advance, back in September, since the soil should be frozen at the time of sowing. At the end of October, the following annual plants are sown:
- aster,
- Chinese carnation,
- viola (pansy) annual,
- scabious,
- godetia,
- Snapdragon,
- Clarkia,
- annual cornflower,
- fragrant mignonette.
What to plant perennial flowers in October? Sowing seeds of perennials is carried out in exactly the same way, but unlike annual plants, their germination rate is much higher. The following species are recommended for planting in October:
- arabis alpine,
- oriental poppy,
- lupine,
- primrose,
- delphinium,
- aconite,
Perennial flowers with rhizomes are most often divided and replanted in the fall, in the second half of September. However, if weather conditions permit, then in early October you can root:
Bulbous plants deserve special attention; it is known that they are planted mainly in autumn. At the same time, the result that the gardener receives in the spring depends on how correctly the plants were planted. Bulbous plants prefer light, nutritious soil; soils that are too dense and heavy are diluted with river sand and peat. Site preparation is carried out 3 weeks before the planned planting date. When preparing holes, be sure to pour a layer of calcined river sand onto the bottom (3–5 cm is enough). This “pillow” will protect the bottom of the bulb from possible infections and fungal diseases. Bulbs must be rooted 2 weeks before the onset of frost. After planting, the bed must be covered with mulch: straw, peat, spruce branches.
What to plant in October from bulbous plants? Most often, the following flowers are popular for decorating flower beds on the site:
Autumn planting in the garden
Garlic and onion
It is these two crops that summer residents most often plant in the fall; garlic in this case will perhaps be even more popular than tulips!
The optimal time for planting onions and garlic is the second half of September - early October . After planting, the garlic should have time to take root, but not germinate. To plant winter garlic, select the largest cloves without signs of disease or rot. Before planting, it is useful to soak your planting material in a light pink solution of potassium permanganate.
It is best to plant garlic when the soil temperature drops to +5 °C.
Plant cloves with a distance of 10 cm between them and 20 cm between rows.
Plant the bulbs in furrows so that the neck is 1.5–2 cm below the soil level. Maintain the same distance as when planting garlic.

Mulch the top of the planting with humus. Mulching will reduce moisture evaporation and protect planting material during winter-autumn temperature changes.

Carrots, beets

Green crops
Also before winter, using summer technology, you can sow parsley, cilantro, dill, sorrel and spinach.
