Garden gladioli tips for care and cultivation
Warm, sunny, wind-protected areas are best suited for growing gladioli. The plant prefers light loamy or sandy loam, well-drained soil with a neutral or moderately acidic reaction.
These flowers require abundant, regular, but not excessive watering. Plants cannot tolerate stagnant water.
For the winter, gladioli bulbs are dug up. This must be done from mid-September until the onset of frost. The stems of the plant are cut short. The dug up corms are washed, dried for 2 weeks, sorted and stored in a cool, dry (5-6°C) place, for example, in a refrigerator, until spring.
Gladioli are propagated. At the end of April - beginning of May, the bulbs dug up in the fall are planted in the flower garden. The soil for planting is prepared in the fall: add 1-2 buckets of humus, 70 g of superphosphate and 30-35 g of potassium salt per 1 m2 of land. Large corms (with a diameter of 1 cm) are buried in the soil by 4-5 cm, medium ones (0.5-1 cm) by 3-4 cm, and small ones (less than 0.5 cm) by 2-2.5 cm. The plantings are mulched with weathered dry peat, watered abundantly, systematically loosened and weeded. Fertilizing is carried out three times, for example, with a solution of complete mineral fertilizer with microelements: when 2-3 leaves appear, when the 6th leaf appears and in the budding phase.
The plant can be affected by rot, fungal diseases, bacterial scab, cancer and gladiolus smut, as well as cutworms, mites, slugs, mole crickets, and thrips. Therefore, when caring for gladioli flowers, it is necessary to take timely preventive measures to protect plants from these diseases and pests.
Gladiolus is used for decorating borders, mixborders, flower beds, and group plantings. They are also grown for cutting and winter forcing.
Valuable advice for growing and caring for gladioli: tie flowers to supports. After flowering, cut off flower stalks with 2-3 leaves. In this case, the remaining leaves should not be damaged, otherwise the plant weakens and forms corms worse.

A little about gladioli
Gladiolus or swordweed (Gladiolus), a representative of the Kasatikov family, received its names for the sword-like shape of the leaves.
The Latin word "gladus" translates as "sword, sword." Long leaves (50-80 cm) at the bottom close around the stem, adding strength to it.
The flowering stem is straight, slender, tall (from 50 cm to 2 m). Flowers are collected in spike-shaped inflorescences of varying densities, which can be one-sided, two-sided or spiral. The height of such a flowering “spike” can reach 80 cm. A simple funnel-shaped perianth unites six petal lobes, unequal in shape and size. After flowering, a tricuspid fruit-box with many round brown seeds is formed.
Gladioli are corms of perennial plants, their corms are rounded-flattened, covered with filmy scales, which are white, yellow of various shades, pink to dark cherry. They reproduce both by seeds and by the growth of tubers and daughter bulbs.
Gladioli are quite widespread in the wild. These are the African tropics and subtropics, the southern half of Europe, Central Asia and even the western part of Siberia. In this regard, gladioli can grow in a variety of conditions. But the main ones are typical for most of them - sunny areas, sufficient moisture in the absence of stagnant water (good drainage), loose fertile soil.
Scientists have described approximately 200 species of gladioli. Hybrid and dwarf varieties are widespread in floriculture, but some wild species are also used in decorative landscaping.

Introduction to different varieties of gladioli - video
Types and varieties of gladioli
The first mention of the sword dates back to 300 BC. In Ancient Greece, the flower was considered a weed, but later Roman patricians began to use gladiolus to decorate luxurious gardens. Skewer is a corm plant from the Iris family, native to the tropical and subtropical zones of several continents. A spectacular plant with a peduncle-stem resembling a sword is found in different countries and regions: Asia Minor, Italy, Southern Transcaucasia, Russia, Iran, North Africa, Belarus. Skewer grows in Eastern and Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Ukraine and other parts of the world.
There are several species and dozens of varieties of gladiolus. Not many plants can “boast” of such a variety of shades of petals: the colors are bright and delicate.
Pleasing to the eye:
- purple,
- white,
- yellow,
- scarlet,
- dark and light pink,
- crimson,
- coral,
- blue,
- carmine and other tones.
Buds with a border around the edges look impressive. The flowers are plain and patterned, with smooth and wavy edges, simple and double, of various shapes and sizes.
Gladiolus - species:
- Ordinary.
- Tiled.
- Byzantine.
- Kochi.
- Bolotny.
A separate category is gladioli of specific varieties:
- Japanese. Unlike the real fennel, the flowers on the stem are not arranged in a dense spike, but in separate elements. Many people believe that this is a lily on a thin long stem. The shade of simple petals: from rich yellow to bright orange with a reddish tint.
- Acidanthera. The plant looks like a sword and belongs to the “fragrant gladioli” group. The flowers are light, delicate shades: cream, white, light yellow. Acidanthera is grown indoors.
Popular varieties:
- Small flowers. Focus, Leviathan, Bleriot, Cézanne.
- Medium size flowers. Ilse, Arabian Knight, Elegy, Polaris, Golden Glory and Golden Dust, America, Mayuba.
- Large-flowered gladioli. Don Quixote, Velvet, Amethyst, Canada, J.S. Bach, Minerva, Peacock's Eye, Berolina.
There are so many shades and colors of the gladiolus sword that it is difficult to list them all. There are no black or blue petals, but some varieties have flowers with such rich purple and red hues that they are called “black gladioli.”
Description and photo of primrose gladioli
The next group of gladiolus varieties is Primrose.
These plants reach up to 1 m in height, and their flowers are 8 cm in diameter. The inflorescences contain up to 23 individual flowers. The elongated upper petals are curved in the form of a hood. Flowering begins in July and ends in September. Despite the fact that primrose gladioli are not too large, they are also suitable for creating bouquets. Did you know? In the 18th century, gladioli were used as a cure for toothache.
Gladiolus variety Robin grows up to 140 cm, and the flower size reaches up to 14 cm in diameter. The buds are 20 cm long. The petals are heavily corrugated and have a red or burgundy color.
Gladiolus Leonora will bring you joy with its golden yellow flowers. Gladiolus petals are dense and medium corrugated. The inflorescence is two-row and dense. The stem is dense, medium in size. It is used to create bouquets and is presented at gladioli exhibitions.
The next variety of gladiolus is Joyce. The plant grows up to 140 cm, and its flowers reach 15 cm in diameter.
All flowers are bright lemon in color and bloom from August to September. Petals are corrugated. The flower itself has a delicate and light aroma. Blooms for about 4 weeks. Joyce gladioli are often used for planting in gardens, flower beds and alpine hills. Also, in the cut, they are selected for creating bouquets.
In any case, the easiest way is to choose the right variety of gladioli from a photo of these wonderful flowers.
Planting flowers correctly
The bulbs are planted in soil heated to 8-10ºС. The embedding depth should be approximately 10 cm. 2-3 cm of sand is poured onto the bottom of the bed.
In central Russia, planting takes place at the end of April. Planting gladioli later will lead to a decrease in soil moisture and delayed flowering.
The distance between plantings and the depth of planting will depend on the size of the planting material and its variety. It is more convenient to plant in rows.
Large bulbs are placed at a distance of 15 cm from each other and to a depth of approximately 10 cm. The furrows need to be watered before planting. The beds are covered with a layer of humus with peat chips or straw. The film is pulled on top.

These plants should not be planted in the same place two years in a row. This will help avoid illness. Gladioli do not like to be adjacent to cruciferous crops (cabbage, radishes, turnips, etc.). Before winter, these flowers can be planted only in the southern regions of Russia with shelter and the creation of the necessary conditions.
Classifications of gladioli
Like many other flowers, gladioli are very diverse. New colorful varieties emerge every year. An ignorant person can already get completely confused in them. To facilitate this process, several classifications of these flowers were invented, which formed the basis of a special nomenclature with the help of which experienced gardeners can easily determine the basic data of a particular variety.
First of all, gladioli differ in flowering time. There are:
Color group name | How many days can pass after planting before inflorescences appear? |
Early, r | About 72 days |
Mid-early, Wed | About 77 days |
Average, s | About 83 days |
Mid-late, sp | About 88 days |
Late, p | About 95 days |
Gladioli can also differ in the diameter of one flower in an inflorescence. Based on this characteristic, there are five different flower sizes.
When describing varieties of gladioli, after the name, the first place is always a three-digit number. The first number just indicates the size of the flower:
- Miniature flowers, less than 6 cm in size.
- Small flowers, 6 to 9 cm in diameter.
- Medium flowers, the size of which ranges between 9 and 11 cm.
- Quite large flowers, with a diameter of 11 to 14 cm.
- Very large flowers, the diameter of which exceeds 14 cm.
The last two numbers in this number describe the main color, shade and various features of the patterns in the color of the flower. There are 11 primary colors to describe color, including white. The descriptions of the most beautiful varieties of gladioli that will follow will be arranged according to the main colors that exist in the classification of these flowers.
The nomenclature usually also indicates data on the inflorescence: how many flowers are formed in it, and data on how many flowers can be fully opened at the same time is given through a slash. The height of the plant is often also indicated.
In addition, gladioli can vary in the degree of corrugation of their petals. There are five grades to describe this, from non-corrugated (ng) to super-corrugated (ssg). The nomenclature of each variety must also indicate the year of registration of the variety and the name of the breeder.

Varieties of gladioli are surprisingly diverse compared to varieties of other flower crops. Among the impressive number of varieties, it is quite difficult to find repeating ones. There are monochromatic, two-color and those that are distinguished by a harmonious combination of all the shades of the rainbow in one peduncle.

Types of gladioli
Gladioli are perennial corms of the Iris family. They got their name from the Latin word gladius - sword, due to the characteristic shape of the leaves. These plants grow wild in the Mediterranean, South and Central Africa, as well as in the subtropics of Eurasia and Madagascar. Some species can be found in the south of Western Siberia, Central and Central Asia.
The world of gladioli is extremely diverse
There are about 280 species of wild gladiolus, the most numerous are presented below.

The inflorescence is a one-sided short spike, which can bear up to 8 flowers at the same time. The color of the petals is purple-violet.
Gladiolus Kochi grows in subalpine meadows
Cultivated species
There are about 5 thousand species of garden, or cultivated, gladioli. Traditionally they are divided into 6 main groups. Species with winter-spring development include Colville, Harlem, Dwarf, Tubergena.
Another 2 groups form species with summer development: Hybrid and Primrose hybrid.
Gladiolus Colvillei
Early flowering species. The stem is up to 0.9 m high, the leaves are slightly lower, up to 0.5 m. The corolla of the flower is funnel-shaped, up to 5 cm. The color of the petals is crimson, pink, white.
One of the small-flowered species - Colville gladiolus
Harlem (Gladiolus harlemensis)
Plants of this group of species are distinguished by a thin and rather fragile stem, the height of which can reach up to 0.8 m. The flowers are small and very decorative. The color of the petals varies, from white to purple-violet. Gladiolus Harlem is an early variety; in open ground, such varieties bloom already in early June, which makes their cultivation commercially attractive.

Dwarf (Gladiolus nanus)
Dwarf gladioli were bred in Holland. The height of the plant does not exceed 0.4 m. The stem is hard and thin. The flowers have an irregular shape, since the lower petals are noticeably narrower than the upper ones. The inflorescence is a short, dense, one-sided spike that can contain up to 10 buds. The color of the petals of most varieties is light, while the petals have a characteristic diamond-shaped spot of a darker tone. Blooms in mid-summer.
Dwarf gladioli are grown to decorate areas and for cutting
Gladiolus tubergenii
This variety includes varieties bred by the Dutch company Van Tubergen. Their main difference is narrow leaves. The stem is straight and rigid, up to 0.75 m in height. The inflorescence is loose, consists of several flowers up to 8 cm in size.
Tubergen gladioli stand well as cut flowers
Hybrid Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybridus hort)
This group includes all summer-flowering hybrids. As a rule, these are tall, up to 2 m, plants with flowers up to 20 cm in size. The colors are extremely variable; the petals may have spots, patterns, and strokes. The corolla can have a wavy, smooth or corrugated edge. Inflorescences can contain up to 20 flowers.
Hybrid - the most common group of gladioli
Hybrid primrose (Gladiolus primulinus hybridus)
Primrose hybrid gladioli are not so popular among gardeners because their inflorescences are not dense. Plants of this species can grow up to 1 m. The leaves are dense and hard, the flowers are irregular in shape, the upper hood-shaped petal is inclined.
Primroses are used much less frequently in decorative floriculture.
Gladiolus hybrid botanical characteristics
There are more than 200 species of gladioli in nature, the main part of them (over 160) come from South Africa. It is here that they are the largest, brightest, and varied in color. South African species formed the basis of the first hybrids obtained by European gardeners in the 18th century.
In the modern classification, there are 6 types of cultivated gladioli, the most numerous group being G. hybrid. It includes all modern varieties that bloom in summer. What does a hybrid gladiolus look like and how does it differ from its wild relatives?
It is a powerful herbaceous plant with an erect stem and a fan of sword-shaped leaves. It grows 1–1.5 m in height. Due to the fact that the leaves close tightly around the stem, it becomes stronger and more stable. There are usually 8–10 leaves, they are dense and rich green in color.
The flower consists of 6 petals (lobes), collected in a wide funnel. The lobes can be of different sizes, rounded or pointed (star-shaped), with wavy or corrugated edges. The flower diameter ranges from 6.5 cm (miniature varieties) to 14 cm or more (large-flowered varieties). They are collected in a spike-shaped inflorescence at the top of the stem, arranged in one, two rows or in a spiral. Usually the peduncle bears from 15 to 26 flowers, of which 9–10 are open at the same time. The coloring is absolutely fantastic. Tones vary from snowy white to brown, the petals can be:
- plain;
- two-, three-color;
- with a spot in the throat or on the lower lobes;
- bordered;
- with strokes, shading.
Modern hybrids are much larger than natural species, the flower is dense, the petals are velvety, highly corrugated, with interesting creases. Particularly valued are varieties of gladioli that are resistant to adverse weather conditions and diseases and reproduce quickly and easily.
According to the timing of flowering, gladioli are divided into 6 groups. For the temperate climate zone, very early to medium cultivars are suitable. Late ones, even if they bloom, will not have time to grow a replacement corm.
