Rose Chippendale, Chippendale Gold (Chip and Dale): photo and description of the variety, reviews

Rose Chippendale, description of the variety, history of creation

If, when you mention the name of the variety, the cartoon characters Chip and Dale come to mind, this is the wrong result. In fact, the variety was named after the famous English furniture maker Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779), who decorated many of his creations with decorative elements in the form of a rose. Selection work to create a floral masterpiece was carried out by the German company Tantau, author - Hans Jurgen Evers.

The year the new variety was created was 2005, but the plant was introduced to the flower growing market in 2006. The exhibition name is Chippendale, which is also a registered trademark. In different countries of the world, the flower is known by other names - Ali Man, Ali Mau, Duchess of Cornwall, Music Hall. The unique code for the rose is Tan97159.

Much controversy arises when classifying a variety. Most sources classify Chippendale as a shrub - a bush plant; in many southern nurseries the plant is presented as a climbing plant (we’ll talk about this feature in the description); the originator classifies his masterpiece as a group of nostalgic hybrid tea varieties.

Awards

Chippendale has participated in many competitions and won awards. In 2008 - Baden b. Wien/Vienna 2nd Prize. Baden b. Wien Rose Trials. In 2013 - Hamilton - Most Fragrant Rose / New Zealand Rose Trials in the category of the most fragrant rose.

Description

The Chippendale rose belongs to the scrub group (these are large bush roses characterized by frost resistance - they can withstand temperatures of −27 degrees). It is considered a classic, ancient variety, but with the characteristics of a modern variety.

Rose bushes are powerful, vigorous, compact. Their height is 80-120 cm, width 70-100 cm. The stems are erect and flexible. The leaves are medium-sized, dark green, leathery, glossy, slightly pointed at the ends.

The rose bushes are powerful, vigorous, compact. The Chip Dale rose bush is powerful, strewn with a large number of eye-catching, densely colored bright flowers. The leaves are leathery, glossy dark green. The size of the bush reaches a height of 0.8 m to 1 m 20 cm and a width of up to 1 m. There can be from 1 to 3 flowers on the stem.

Flowering is quite abundant throughout the entire season, repeated. Tall, as if slightly sharpened buds of a bright orange color, which begins to turn pale when opening. When fully opened, the flower becomes pink with a hint of apricot color. When open, the bud reaches a diameter of about 11 cm. The flower can have up to 80 petals. The flowers are large (diameter 12 cm), cup-shaped, grow quickly, and have a delicate fruit aroma. The petals are terry, densely arranged (their number is 50-80 pieces).

The English rose Chippendale has good resistance to frost, black spot and powdery mildew, and rain. Also, the variety is not afraid of the scorching sun and prolonged rain, its decorative qualities do not suffer from this. This plant amazes with its endurance.

Flowers are collected in inflorescences of 2 - 3 buds at the tops of the branches. Single specimens are also found. They are painted in bright orange, apricot, and delicate pink shades.

The bush with roses blooms in early June. In areas with a warm climate, the plant can bloom until November.

Important! Flowering occurs twice. Moreover, the Chippendale rose blooms more intensely for the second time.

The bushes tolerate unfavorable weather conditions well: scorching sun rays, prolonged precipitation, cold, frost. Even during heavy rains, the flowers retain their shapes, colors, and the petals do not fall off.

Photo and description of flowers

The outer petals of Chippendale are light-medium pink, and the centers can be anything from rich salmon to almost apricot orange, depending on the weather. English roses are famous for their fragrance, and although Chippendale is not an Austin rose, it is every bit as good.

Her perfume is medium, very charming, a mixture of the sweet old scent of tea rose with notes of oriental spices. The variety begins flowering at the beginning of the season and continues until autumn. It shows great disease resistance.

Description

The plant is vigorous. The bush grows vertically, powerful, quite well leafy, branched, dense. The foliage is imparipinnate, consisting of 7 leaves, healthy, leathery, glossy, rich dark green. The declared height is 80 - 120 cm, width - 100 cm. The shoots are erect, strong, very prickly. A well-groomed plant looks compact and neat. But in hot climates, the bush often shoots out long shoots, or rods, due to which it becomes quite tall. Long shoots, if not tied up, begin to droop as the flower clusters open. Because of this feature, our heroine is often confused with climbing varieties. Numerous reviews confirm the great growth power of the bush, which significantly exceeds standard sizes. The number of buds on the stem is from 1 to 3 pieces.

Characteristics

  • The hybrid tea Chippendale variety will definitely delight you with flowering the very next year after planting. But he will be able to fully show his abilities only in the 3rd year;
  • the culture is quite frost-resistant. According to the USDA classification, it can safely grow in USDA zone 5, characterized by frosts from -26.1°C to -28.9°C. But still, it’s not worth risking a heat-loving flower, especially when the winter is snowless and the temperature can rise sharply and then drop again;
  • Rose's immunity is decent. There is a fairly high resistance to the main diseases of the crop - powdery mildew and black spot. Problems can still arise, especially at a young age. Of the pests, aphids, which take a liking to young shoots and flower buds, cause particular inconvenience;
  • moisture resistance is excellent, flowers do not deteriorate even from prolonged exposure to moisture. This fact is confirmed by rose growers;
  • the bright sun causes the petals to fade slightly, but this does not make our heroine lose her charm;
  • Chippendale's aroma is strong, bright and memorable - pink with notes of fruit and oriental spices;
  • The rose shows excellent cutting characteristics. The vase retains its graceful lines and magical charm for a long time.

Preparing roses for winter

The first thing you should take care of before wintering flowers is feeding. A good immunostimulating mixture can be prepared from the following components:

  • Superphosphate – 25 grams.
  • Boric acid – 2.5 grams.
  • Potassium sulfate – 10 grams.

The mixture is applied under the bushes at the end of summer. In autumn (early September), flowers are watered with a solution containing the following components:

  • Superphosphate – 15 grams.
  • Potassium monophosphate – 16 grams.
  • Water - a bucket.

Chippendale roses have twining branches, so supports are often installed. So, before wintering, the branches are removed from these supports, all weak and damaged shoots are cut off. Next, they are tied and placed at the base of the bush.

All rose bushes are properly spudded and covered with spruce branches. This procedure is carried out mainly in areas where the weather is harsh and frosty. If the winter is warm enough, there is no need to remove the shoots from the support. You can secure spruce branches on top using cords and twines. In this case, the flowers are not afraid of the cold, and next year they will bloom beautifully.

Chippendale Gold variety

Our heroine has a namesake - Chippendale Gold. It also appeared thanks to breeders of the German company Tantau, but a little later. The year of her birth is 2011. The year of introduction is 2012. Exhibition name - Chippendale Gold, universal code - TAN1759. It is a scrub, the height of the bush is 80 - 100 cm. The foliage is bright green. The flowers are of an ancient shape, cup-shaped, double, consisting of 26 - 40 petals. The flowers are of the lodged type, characterized by the fact that the numerous petals of the middle are twisted into 4 separate groups and form a square. The color of the rose petals is golden yellow, but towards the end of flowering it fades to light lemon, almost white. The variety is new, so its characteristics have not yet been tested in our country. Although some rose growers have already planted seedlings and can appreciate the beauty of the golden Chippendale.

Description of rose Chippendale Gold

In 2011, breeders from the same company developed another variety. Chippendale Gold or a close relative of the hybrid tea rose, Chippendale, is distinguished by its more compact size and shade of buds.

The Chippendale Gold variety is also a scrub variety. But its height rarely exceeds 1 m. The diameter of the plant is about 80 cm. The thorny shoots are covered with bright green glossy foliage. The buds are cup-shaped, terry, consisting of 30-40 petals. A distinctive feature is that the inner petals curl together, forming 4 unique buds, framed by larger petals. This form of sepals is called quartered.

Rose Chippendale Gold during the flowering period is densely strewn with yellow-golden inflorescences. As they bloom, the buds fade somewhat in the sun and acquire a light lemon or cream color.

There is little information about the characteristics of the Chippendale Gold variety. It is still difficult to judge its resistance to frost, moisture deficiency, and disease. But we should hope that he will not yield to his namesake.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Chippendale roses are known for their many advantages. This sets them apart from other decorative varieties.

Main advantages:

  • long flowering;
  • compactness of bushes;
  • frost resistance;
  • good drought resistance;
  • low sensitivity to infections;
  • nice smell.

Despite a number of undeniable advantages, the Chippendale variety also has disadvantages. Every gardener should take this into account before growing such a plant.

Petals can change color depending on the light

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • sensitivity to pests;
  • long growth time;
  • lack of flowering in the first year after planting;
  • demands on growing conditions.

Important! If not properly cared for, a hybrid tea rose will lose its varietal qualities. The buds will become smaller and their color less saturated.

Despite the presence of shortcomings, the Chippendale variety is in demand among domestic gardeners. Therefore, you should consider the basics of agricultural technology for ornamental plants.

Application in landscape design

Chippendale rose is actively used to decorate areas. The culture is characterized by abundant flowering. It looks impressive in solitary plantings and hedges, so it is often used for zoning an area.

Important! The plant can serve as an excellent decoration for arches and columns, so it is often planted near gazebos and other country buildings.

Rose fits perfectly into landscape design

How to plant a Chippendale rose in landscape design

The plant is usually used for single planting. 4-6 bushes are placed nearby. Due to their long flowering period, Chippendale roses do not need to be planted together with other plants.

For group planting, shrubs are usually used, which remain decorative throughout the season. It is also advisable to grow plants with roses that repel pests.

Nearby you can plant:

  • hosts;
  • dwarf conifers;
  • spirea;
  • silver wormwood;
  • Heuchera;
  • calendula;
  • cuffs;
  • geranium;
  • lavender;
  • marigold;
  • nasturtiums

Plants that are undemanding in terms of soil composition should be planted next to Chippendale roses.

Experienced gardeners recommend placing ornamental crops on a plant 60-70 cm tall. Then they will not create shadows and will not harm each other.

Methods for propagating Chippendale roses

The Chip 'n Dale rose can be propagated in one of two ways.

The cutting method is carried out in the summer by taking a recently faded shoot. Next, following the order:

  • The shoot is divided and cut into pieces 15 or 20 cm long so that 5 leaves remain. The cut at the bottom is made in such a way that the angle is as close as possible to the leaf petiole.
  • You need to plant it in partial shade, dig up the bed and add humus.
  • From the prepared cuttings you need to remove three leaves from the bottom. It is planted in the ground at an angle, deepened to the first of the remaining leaves.
  • The bed must be generously watered and covered with film to create a greenhouse effect.
  • To increase the speed of organization of the root system, special products must be applied to the cuttings.
  • It will be possible to transplant to a place for permanent cultivation only after 2-3 years.

The Chippendale bush rose can be rooted using a tap. This is done in the spring at the beginning of sap flow according to the following instructions:

  • A shallow ditch is dug next to the bush.
  • The strongest shoot located on the side is lowered into the groove, and the bark is scraped off in several places (to speed up the formation of roots). The shoot is buried up to the top (it is not buried) with earth.
  • The buried part must be secured with staples.
  • Be sure to water regularly, not allowing the soil to dry out. The buds that will appear at the top are removed.
  • A year later in the spring, if the shoot has taken root, it can be separated from the bush.

Flower propagation

Roses can be propagated by layering and cuttings. Each method has its own characteristics.

When is it produced?

Cuttings should be harvested in the summer. A shoot that has already bloomed is suitable for this.

Detailed description

Rose propagation methods:

  1. By cuttings. In this case, you need to cut off the faded shoot and make cuttings 15-20 cm in size. The lower leaves should be removed and the plant buried in the prepared bed to a depth of 5-6 cm. Cover the top with film. To speed up the appearance of roots, use Kornevin. Bushes can be planted in a permanent place for 3 years.
  2. By layering. In this case, you need to make a small groove near the bush and dig a powerful shoot into it. The crown should remain on the surface. In this case, the buried branch must be watered systematically. It will be possible to separate the plant next spring.

Roses can be propagated by cuttings

Planting and caring for the Chippendale park rose

The plant is planted in lighted areas with partial shading during the day. Planting is carried out at the end of April or mid-May. Chippendale roses require loose, well-fertilized soil. A mixture of leaf and turf soil in combination with peat and compost is suitable.

Important! Planting roses in areas with dense, swampy soil is strictly prohibited.

Carrying out landing:

  1. Dig a hole 70-80 cm deep.
  2. Broken brick or expanded clay is placed at the bottom for drainage.
  3. Fill the hole halfway with soil mixture.
  4. The roots of the seedling are placed in an antiseptic solution for 20 minutes.
  5. Place the plant in the soil.
  6. Straighten the roots and sprinkle with loose soil.
  7. The root collar is buried 10 cm.
  8. Fill the hole with soil and water it.

You cannot plant more than 6 bushes nearby so that they do not shade each other.

After planting, it is recommended to remove the top shoots from the plant. This promotes root growth and rapid adaptation to new conditions.

Bushes require special care when flowering. Due to the large number of buds, the Chippendale rose quickly depletes the soil. It is necessary to regularly fertilize the flower with mineral fertilizers. They are applied once every 4 weeks.

Watering is carried out 2-3 times a week. If the weather is not dry, the frequency is reduced. Each bush requires 10 liters of water. The rose responds well to sprinkling, so it needs to be sprayed periodically.

With each watering, loosen the soil so that it does not become compacted. To retain moisture, it can be mulched with bark or straw.

Growing conditions

To plant rose bushes, you need to choose sunny, sufficiently lit areas, well protected from winds and drafts (light partial shade is acceptable). In the shade, plants develop poorly, can be susceptible to various diseases, flowers become smaller and become faded.

Rose scrub Chippendale prefers fertile, loose, permeable, well-drained, slightly acidic or neutral soils (loams).

Attention! For Chippendale roses, it is not so much nutrition that is important but the lightness of the soil.

Plants can suffer from powdery mildew caused by intense, prolonged heat. To prevent disease, it is necessary to water the bushes abundantly. In the evening, at sunset, they are moistened by sprinkling. Add Fundazol or another fungicide to the water.

In what form is planting carried out?

It is best to grow the plant from seedlings. They can be purchased in specialized stores. It is important to pay attention to the quality of planting material.

What time does boarding take place?

The crop should be planted in the ground in mid-May. It is also permissible to carry out planting work at the end of October.

Selecting a location

When growing Chippendale shrub roses, you need to choose the right site. It is important to plant the crop in a sunny area. During the flowering period, temperature indicators should not be less than +15 degrees. Humidity parameters should be no more than 60%.

The soil must have neutral acidity parameters. An area with light soil is best. It should allow air and moisture to pass through well.

Important! Groundwater must lie deep enough. Excessive amounts of liquid provoke rotting of the roots.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Before planting, the seedling should be soaked in water for 1 day. Then the shoots should be trimmed. The height of the bush should be 30 cm. Before planting, the roots should be sprinkled with ash.

It is necessary to prepare holes on the site with a depth of 40 cm. This is done a week before planting. In this case, it is recommended to mix the excavated soil with humus.

Watering

The Chippendale rose variety, described in this article, is demanding when it comes to watering. If the bush has just been planted or replanted, then frequent, abundant watering is required. Once established, the plant will not be so capricious. It will need to be irrigated rarely, once every ten days, but abundantly, at least ten liters of water for each bush. Lack of moisture is bad for his health. The shoots stop growing, the bush is covered with small and sparse flowers. The plant's foliage will turn pale green and begin to fall off. As we have already written, pay special attention to watering in hot weather. Watering should be done more often. Chippendale bushes especially like to take a shower. In the evening, when the sun is not able to burn the delicate leaves, do not be lazy to pamper your decorative beauty. You will notice how she perks up.

If the season is rainy, then watering should be done as needed. Chippendale roses do not like soil that is too wet. With the onset of autumn, watering should be reduced to a minimum. In preparation for winter, be sure to provide generous, last watering of the year.

Further flower care

It is necessary to care for roses in compliance with the rules outlined below.

Watering, weeding and loosening

Watering of plants of this variety should be differentiated. If the bush was recently planted, then it needs an abundance of moisture. If the plant has been growing in a given place for a long time, then watering is done once a week. One bush needs ten liters of heated, but not hot water.

The optimal time of day to perform this procedure is evening, since evaporation is less intense during this period. If we talk about the seasons, then Chippendale requires the least volume of liquid in the fall. At the same time, just before the arrival of cold weather, it is necessary to water abundantly in order to supply the bushes with moisture.

Likewise, it is necessary to regularly loosen the bushes, and the weeds growing next to them need to be weeded.

Feeding scheme

In the first year, it is recommended to fertilize with one of two formulations. Either they add mullein, which is diluted in a ratio of one part to six parts of water, or poultry, for example, chicken droppings, in which case one part of it is dissolved in 15 parts of water.

After the first year, fertilizing is carried out taking into account the condition of the soil. It is recommended to apply nitrogen in the spring, and phosphorus and potassium in the fall.

Rose blossom

If care procedures are not followed correctly during the flowering period, the rose may not bloom.

Period of activity and rest

The bush begins to bloom in early June. If the climate is warm, flowering can continue until November. Repeated flowering is more luxuriant.

Care during and after flowering

During the flowering period, the Chippendale rose scrub does not require special care, and after that the plant is fed and pruned.

Trimming

Pruning of roses is carried out in the fall, in October-November, in order to prepare for wintering, or in the spring, before its buds swell. This operation is performed when the sky is clear and there is no precipitation.

You need to take a pruner and disinfect it in potassium permanganate. Next, the shoots that are located five millimeters above the developed bud are trimmed. The cut itself should be located at an angle of 45° to the direction of growth of the stem. Pruning involves removing branches that are damaged or growing poorly, creating shade and inhibiting the growth of others.

Shoots one year old are shortened by a third, and at two years old - by three or four buds.

Is it possible to prune a Chippendale rose in half?

The need for such a procedure is questioned by many gardeners. Looking at the photos, reviews and description of the Chippendale rose, we need to clarify this issue.

Such a flower cannot be cut in half. It grows for a long time and removing shoots can negatively affect its size. After flowering, the Chippendale rose needs to be cut back by 1/3. Usually shoots are shortened by 1-2 buds.

Important! Roses over 2 years old are pruned. In the first year, shoots can be removed from the flower only immediately after planting.

Sanitary pruning is carried out at the end of autumn, when the leaves fall off the bushes. In the spring, shoots that have dried out over the winter are removed.

Preparing for winter

Before wintering, young plants must be covered with spruce branches. For old Chippendale bushes, this measure is required if the area experiences severe winters. Another element of preparation is fertilizing with phosphorus and potassium using monophosphate or superphosphate.

Rose blossom

Rose Sophia Loren - description of the varietal bush

This culture is characterized by lush and abundant flowering. Rose buds have a pleasant fruity aroma.

Period of activity and rest

The plant blooms throughout the summer. It is more abundant in the second wave. With the onset of cold weather, the crop begins a dormant period.

The rose is characterized by lush flowering

Care during and after flowering

During the flowering period, the crop needs regular pruning. It is recommended to pinch long shoots by 10-15 cm. This accelerates the growth of weaker branches. To get large inflorescences, the side shoots are cut off at the initial stage of development.

What to do if it doesn’t bloom, possible reasons

The lack of flowering may be due to the following factors:

  • young or too old plant;
  • incorrect choice of landing site;
  • violation of pruning rules;
  • improper care;
  • the appearance of root shoots;
  • bacterial burn.

What to do if it doesn’t bloom, possible reasons

The plant usually does not bloom in the first year. Then the rose may not bloom for one of several reasons:

  • Incorrect landing site selected. The plant should be planted in as open an area as possible.
  • Incorrect trimming. If a rose is severely pruned, it may prevent it from blooming.
  • Wrong care. Roses require timely feeding and spraying against pests.
  • The plant is sick or has been attacked by pests.

Important! If you do not follow the rules of care, the rose may die.

Improper care leads to the death of the plant

Diseases, pests and ways to combat them

A rose can suffer from various insects - spider mites, aphids, sawflies. Insecticides - Aktara, Iskra, Komandor - help to cope with them.

Common diseases include rust, gray mold, and downy mildew. Bordeaux mixture helps remove rust. When rot develops, it is worth using Fundazol. Hom will help remove the symptoms of peronosporosis.

Growing Chippendale roses has a number of features. To achieve lush and abundant flowering, the crop needs to be watered, pruned and fed on time.
