An early ripening variety, easy to grow and care for - Zabava grapes

Origin

The white-fruited “lora” (later “flora”) and the blue-fruited “kodrianka” gave birth to a new variety that inherited the best features of their “parents”. This crossing was carried out by an amateur breeder from Ukraine (Zaporozhye) V.V. Zagorulko.

The new hybrid was called “fun,” but sometimes it is also called “black lora,” thus referring, albeit indirectly, to “family ties.”

Parents of “fun” – “flora” and blue-fruited “kodrianka”

About the variety Pyzhova V.M.

The hybrid form of pink large-fruited grapes “Paradise”, popularly bred by Vladimir Mitrofanovich Pyzhov, appeared much earlier than V.U. Kapelyushny’s. The hybrid “Paradise” from Pyzhov is the result of crossing two parent forms of grapes, the varieties “Kishmish Radiant” and “Original”.

Agro-biological characteristics:

Growing season for the grape variety “Raisky” selected by Pyzhov V.M. lasts about 120-130 days. This classifies the form as an early hybrid form in terms of maturity. The grapes are usually ready for harvest in mid-August. It is not recommended to keep it on the bushes for a long time, as the form bursts from excess moisture after rains.

The growth force of the vines of self-rooted bushes is strong, growing up to 5-6 meters per season. The shoots stretch intensively, but ripen well, although they have many stepsons. The ripening of vines per season is about 80%. The cuttings root well.

When pruning the vines of an adult bush, about 50 buds are left. This hybrid loves medium pruning of vines with 6-8 eyes. Clusters develop from 3-6 buds.

Frost resistance:

“Paradise” selection by Pyzhov V.M. is a winter-hardy variety. The hybrid form has increased frost resistance -21-23°C. It is covered for the winter in the southern regions to increase the chances of good preservation of all central fruit buds and improve next year's harvests. Young bushes especially need to be insulated for the winter during the first three years of their life, until they have gained strong wood.

Flowering type:

According to the nature of flowering, Pyzhov’s hybrid belongs to the bisexual forms of grapes. Not susceptible to peas. In years with normal timing of the beginning of spring, flowering of the vine bushes occurs in early June.

Productivity:

“Paradise” from Pyzhov in terms of yield is within the average range. One adult bush brings about 20 kilograms of harvest.

Characteristics of the bunches:

Brushes shaped by Pyzhova V.M. “Paradise” has a regular conical shape with “wings”. The density of berries in the bunches is average, most often the bunch is loose. The berries in the bunch are not deformed. The bunch weighs from 800 to 1500 grams. If you ration the bunches on the bushes, then if you leave one bunch on the shoot, the weight of the bunches can increase to 2.0-2.5 kg. The length of the bunch is about 40-50 centimeters.

Characteristics of berries:

The grape berries of this variety have a very beautiful elongated “fingers” shape. They reach 40-50 mm in length and 25-30 mm in width. The weight of the berries is 10-15 grams. On average about 12 grams. The color changes during ripening from yellow-pink to pink-red throughout the berry. Inside, the berries have juicy but dense sugary pulp. The skin is thin and cannot be felt when eating. The taste is very good and harmonious.

The balance of sugars and acids becomes optimal at the end of July and at the beginning of August. When the grapes are fully ripe, they improve. Sugar accumulation – 16-18%, acid content – 6-7%. Taster rating: 7.8 points.

Resistance to grape diseases:

The hybrid “Paradise”, bred by Pyzhov, is characterized by average resistance to vine diseases. In normal years, the variety does not require additional treatments other than standard ones.

Transportable properties:

Hybrid form Pyzhova V.M. transfers transportation over medium distances. The variety does not tolerate longer transportation due to cracking of the berries from strong shaking.

Features of cultivation

“Zabava” is resistant to frost down to -21°C, and in general is a rather unpretentious variety. The “fun” shoots ripen well. Cuttings root without problems. The variety is compatible with most rootstocks.

Landing

The time it takes to propagate grapes directly depends on the chosen method. You can increase the number of bushes by layering in late spring or summer; spring is ideal for cuttings, but seedlings can be planted in both spring and autumn. The main thing is that there are no first frosts or that warm weather remains stable.

Place and soil

“Zabava” will give a good harvest on fertile black soil. If the soil on your garden plot does not have a good composition, it can be enriched by adding a mixture of river sand, chernozem, peat, humus and a small amount of dry mineral fertilizers when planting seedlings in holes.

The place chosen for planting should be well lit and protected from drafts. The close contact of groundwater to the ground surface and the presence of tall trees growing nearby that shade the grape bushes are unacceptable.

When preparing the planting hole, it is necessary to retreat about 2.5 meters from the walls of buildings, and the same amount from neighboring bushes.

The pit for grapes should be spacious - 80 cm in depth, width and length. Its bottom must be covered with a drainage layer of 15 - 20 cm. The rest of the place is filled with a nutrient mixture, which is filled to the top only after placing the seedling in the hole. After compacting the top layer, the surface is covered with mulch.

Watering and fertilizing

The variety needs infrequent but abundant watering. In total, during the growing season, it is necessary to pour water under the bushes 4-5 times: after buds open, before and after flowering, during the period when the berries look like peas, and before winter shelter. Another one - in the fall, after harvesting. At this time, at least 60 liters of water should be poured under each bush, while in spring and summer only 10 - 20 liters.

If the summer turns out to be dry, then it is advisable to mulch the soil under the bushes with sawdust, straw and even cardboard.

need to be applied several times throughout the year . In spring - nitrogen and potassium, you can add a small amount of zinc and phosphorus. When the berries ripen, it is necessary to feed the bushes with phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and for the winter - potassium or organic matter in the form of humus.

Trimming

Formative pruning is done in the fall, after the leaves fall and sap flow stops. “Fun” shoots should be cut to 6–8 buds, remembering that the recommended load on the bush should not exceed 45 buds.

Important! High yields can be obtained only if the bunches are rationed: one bunch must be left per shoot, all the rest, still in the inflorescence state, will need to be removed.

You cannot do without sanitary pruning, the time of which falls in early spring: during it, all shoots damaged during the winter, sick and injured, are removed.

Wintering

The fun can withstand frosts down to -25C. But in the central part and in the northern regions you should not forget about insulation for the winter. To do this, after autumn pruning, the vines are removed from the support and laid on the ground, more precisely, on a backing made of slate or thick cardboard or roofing felt. The shoots are covered with straw and dry leaves on top, or you can simply dig them in with earth.

Diseases and pests

The undoubted advantage of the “Zabava” variety is its high resistance to oidium and gray rot, but the grapes are vulnerable to mildew, attacks by wasps and other pests. To prevent the development of a fungal infection, it is enough to carry out several irrigations with fungicides, which can be purchased without any problems at any specialized store.

But you will have to fight with wasps. To do this, you can try to remove all wasp nests located near the vineyard. Another way is to spray each bunch with pure table vinegar. Some winegrowers water the soil under the bushes with liquid smoke. One of the most effective ways is to wrap the bunches in gauze bags, but to avoid rotting of the berries, the bunches will need to be regularly ventilated.

It is also possible to attack spider mites, grape mites, phylloxera, and leaf roller butterflies. For prevention purposes, it is recommended to treat with insecticides, and it is also important to comply with agrotechnical requirements for growing the variety.

Harvest storage

If all storage standards are observed, grape clusters can remain in a dark and cool room for up to 2 months.

Important! There is no need to rush into harvesting Zabava, since the clusters hanging on the bush for a long time only improve their taste by acquiring sugar. And so - for more than a month, without losing its presentation.

Growing regions

The variety is intended for cultivation in Ukraine, Belarus, most of the territory of Russia (south, middle zone, Moscow region and Leningrad region), not excluding the latitude of the Urals and Siberia.

Diseases and pests

Zabava grapes are relatively resistant to most fungal diseases. It is almost not affected by gray rot, resistance to oidium is 3 points, to mildew - 3.5 points. If fungal diseases have been recorded, you need to fight them by spraying 2-3 times per season with special broad-spectrum fungicides. For prevention, treatment with Bordeaux mixture 1% is suitable.

Photos of dangerous grape diseases

Of the pests, this variety is most loved by the leaf roller, grape mite, spider mite, and phylloxera. To combat them, special insecticides are used. If there are no pests yet, but there is a high chance of their appearance, you can use folk infusions and solutions to repel them.

Wasps are very fond of Zabava grapes. Sometimes the problem reaches catastrophic proportions. What to do?

  1. Any wasp nests on the site are destroyed or relocated.
  2. The land is treated with “liquid smoke”.
  3. Ripening bunches can be treated with table vinegar (to repel insects).
  4. Almost ripe bunches should be placed in special bags for grapes.

Reviews

Zabava has a harmonious sweet taste, the flesh is crispy, and the skin is not noticeable when eating. Vitaly Vladimirovich, Zaporozhye

The berry is not inferior to Flora, the bunch is loose, the stability is at the same level. I think it will be a good alternative to Kodryanka. Victor, Zaporozhye region.

I really liked the taste of the fun, meaty and juicy, similar to Flora. Andrey Alexandrovich, Rivne region.

How to plant grapes?

The Zabava grape variety can withstand significant temperature drops, so it can be planted both in spring and autumn. Propagation is carried out by cuttings and grafting onto the rootstock. The place is chosen to be well-lit, sunny, warm, and not subject to strong winds. Since the root system of this crop is not deep, a high groundwater level is unacceptable! The type of soil can be any, but only neutral or low acidity is acceptable.

Photo of planting grapes

Zabava grapes are planted at a distance of 2.5 meters from each other so that they have room to grow and develop. It is advisable to make a support, trellis or something similar in advance - where the vine can climb as it grows. This not only allows you to free the paths from overgrown lashes, but also facilitates the further formation of the bush.
