Description and characteristics of Giovanni grapes, planting and cultivation

History of selection

The variety was bred by an amateur from the Rostov region, V.U. Kapelyushny, who is a mechanical engineer by training and created more than a dozen new hybrids. The popular early variety Vostorg red and F4 served as the parent forms. The variety is still being tested by gardeners.

Did you know? The science that studies grape varieties is called ampelography. This name was introduced into use in 1661 by the Polish scientist Philip Sax, who is considered its founder. The scientific basis for it was laid by Simon Clemente in 1806 in his book dedicated to the varieties of Andalusia.

Diseases

High humidity increases the risk of fungal diseases of the variety. For prevention, the vine must be sprayed. Grapes are susceptible to anthracnose disease. To prevent this, the bush is treated with copper sulfate. It withstands diseases such as oidium and gray rot, which are fatal to the vine. Reduced resistance to them in hybrids is caused by the lack of a sharp taste and a large amount of tartaric acid. Mildew appears as yellow spots that cover the leaf en masse in wet weather. Then the tops of the shoots and the berries themselves are affected, eventually falling off. If aphids attack a vineyard, there will be a very labor-intensive process of getting rid of it. A large amount of carbon disulfide is applied to the plant, which is harmful to the vine. But if you reduce the dose, you may not kill phylloxera. A special calendar has been created with the names of chemical solutions for processing.

Characteristics of grapes

This variety is difficult to confuse with others, thanks to its characteristic features.

Ripening time and yield

Refers to early fruiting varieties (100–105 days from bud break). The yield is 10–15 t/ha.

Bunches

It grows large brushes with a long stem, weighing 0.7–1.2 kg, cylindrical in shape and of medium density. No tendency to pea.

The clusters can hang on the vine for a long time and not fall off, but it is better not to overexpose them, as they may begin to raisinize. But they do not rot, do not crack, and are not particularly affected by wasps. One large bunch is usually formed on one shoot.

Berries

Very beautiful elongated nipple-shaped berries grow on the bunches, which when fully ripe become dark cherry in color. They are large in size and weigh about 10–12 g. The pulp is sweet, fleshy and juicy, with a slight nutmeg. Each berry contains 2-3 seeds.

Advantages and disadvantages of Giovanni

  • The advantages of this grape variety from Kapelyushny include:
  • early ripeness;
  • beautiful, marketable bunches;
  • excellent taste with notes of nutmeg;
  • interesting elongated nipple shape of the berries and their rich color;
  • frost resistance;
  • relative resistance to major diseases;
  • transportability;
  • good rooting of cuttings and compatibility with many rootstocks.
  • There are not many disadvantages:
  • the rarity of high-quality planting material and its high cost;
  • tendency to overload;
  • too much growth requires good shaping and care.

Advantages

A promising variety with excellent presentation and excellent taste.

The advantages of the variety are:

  • large berry size;
  • high productivity;
  • frost resistance (up to -23 °C);
  • resistance to fungal diseases;
  • excellent taste (high sugar content).

and disadvantages

Among the disadvantages, some winegrowers identified peas after particularly wet weather and a tendency to mildew in the absence of regular garter.

Growing rules

This variety, like any grape, loves well-lit places with aquifers no closer than 1.5 m. It prefers chernozems and clay soils with a slightly acidic reaction. Planting is best done in the spring, but in the southern regions it can also be planted in the fall. This vigorous variety takes root easily, but you should not hesitate to plant it after purchase. Before planting, the seedling is soaked in water, to which a growth stimulator can be added.

Important! If you decide to graft with the Giovanni variety, then for this you need to choose rootstocks with high growth vigor, for example, Kober 5BB and Ferkal.

When planting a bush near the wall of a house, you should choose the south side. The planting hole is dug in standard sizes (0.8×0.8 m) at a distance of 2–3 m from other bushes, 1.5 m from the walls and away from trees.

The pit must be prepared in advance. Humus or rotted manure is poured into the bottom, to which ash can be added. The top fertile layer of soil is poured on top, into which the seedling is later planted. When planting, you should spread the roots well and cover them with soil, compact them and water them abundantly. If the sun is very active, it is recommended to shade the young seedling for the first time and not allow the soil to dry out, which can be mulched.

Planting methods

Hybrid Giovanni is distinguished by its great growth vigor and when planting it, you can use different methods:

  • trellis;
  • parietal;
  • arched;
  • gazebo.

Diseases and pests

On young grape leaves, under unfavorable climatic conditions, various types of fungal infections develop:

  • downy mildew (mildew);
  • powdery mildew (oidium);
  • anthracnose;
  • gray rot;
  • black spot.

Preventive treatment of grapes is carried out 3 times during the growing season with fungicidal preparations. The most dangerous pest of grapes is root and leaf aphids (phylloxera). Affected Giovanni bushes are uprooted and burned.

Rules of care

When caring for Giovanni grapes, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:

  • carefully care for young seedlings in the first 3 years;
  • Water regularly - each bush is watered at least once a week with 2 buckets of water;
  • after watering, loosen the soil and remove weeds;
  • in the spring, unhill the shoots and carry out the cutting in this way - remove the thin roots from above and cover them again with soil;
  • carry out recommended preventive treatments;
  • fertilize bushes to increase productivity;
  • pinch and pinch 6–7 days before flowering;
  • For the winter, be sure to provide shelter from frost.

Coniferous branches, spunbond are used as shelter, and they are also simply covered with soil.

Formation of bushes

For this variety, you can apply a fan-shaped formation of a bush without a standard into 4 sleeves in the autumn. The length of the formation is about 15 cm, i.e. shoots are removed at a length of 5–10 cm. When pruning, an average of 6–8 eyes are left.

Important! It is imperative to remove excess shoots (stepchildren), since their growth will reduce the yield and quality of the grapes.

Fertilizers

To fertilize Giovanni grapes, organic and mineral fertilizers are used. Fertilizer application is combined with watering.

To get a good harvest, grape growing experts recommend applying at least three fertilizing treatments throughout the year:

  1. The first application of fertilizers is carried out immediately after the bushes open in the spring. During this period, it is good to use organic fertilizer in the form of rotted manure or bird droppings. To do this, 0.5 liters of such organic matter are diluted into 10 liters and watered. For 1 bush there are 1-2 buckets of nutrient solution. During this period, it is useful to sprinkle the soil near the bush with wood ash. This will not only fertilize the soil, but also protect against fungal diseases.
  2. The second application of fertilizer must be done immediately before flowering. For this purpose, mineral fertilizers are used. Take 30 g of the mixture, which consists of 3 parts nitrogen, 2 parts phosphorus, 1 part potassium, dilute it in 10 liters of liquid and water the grape bushes.
  3. The third feeding is carried out at the initial stage of berry formation. To do this, take 50–70 g of superphosphate and 20–25 g of potassium sulfate. You can purchase ready-made mineral fertilizers such as Novofert and Master.

Did you know? The copyright of wine breeders is protected by the International Union for the Protection of Achievements of Plant Industry, which uses the OIV classifier.
To determine varieties, he uses 77 characteristics, each of which has its own encoding.

Prevention of diseases and pests

To preserve the harvest, preventive treatments should be carried out against diseases to which grapes may be susceptible. These are mildew, rot, oidium, anthracnose. After all, it is better to prevent any disease than to treat it.

Grape growing experts recommend taking the following preventive measures against the occurrence of diseases and pests:

  • before sheltering for the winter, treat with iron sulfate at the rate of 350–400 g per 10 liters of liquid;
  • in the spring , immediately after opening the grape dose, treat the bushes with copper oxychloride;
  • with DNOC or Nitrafen once every 2–3 years
  • after the first 3–5 leaves appear on the vine, treat with one of the preparations: “Ridomil Gold”, “Omite” or “Antrakol”;
  • before flowering, spray again using the chemicals “Ridomil Gold” or “Antrakol”;
  • After flowering, at the initial stage of berry formation, treat again: with colloidal sulfur, Strobi or Ridomil Gold.

Important! Colloidal sulfur must be used at air temperatures above +18°C, since only at this temperature does sulfur evaporate. Otherwise, this drug will not have the desired effect.

Adherents of environmentally friendly grapes process the vineyards every other year, alternating Bordeaux mixture with 3% iron sulfate.

Ripe berries can attract birds and wasps. These pests love to eat sweet grapes. In this case, to protect the harvest, a special nylon bag with small cells is put on each bunch of grapes.

Such bags do not interfere with the flow of air and sun to the fruits, but they do not allow these winged pests to reach the berries. To scare away small birds, you can put a scarecrow or tie brightly colored ribbons to the bushes. But to combat wasps, you should destroy their nests and place sticky traps.

Reviews about the Giovanni variety

Amateur gardeners and winegrowers speak extremely ambiguously about the Giovanni variety. The thing is that this is a rare, recently bred variety, and there are forms on sale that do not meet the requirements of the variety in terms of yield, type of berries and weight of bunches, taste and ripening time, disease resistance and frost resistance. Some winegrowers attribute this to material taken from an unproductive bud. The result is the same - many criticize the variety and abandon it.

The winegrowers who received high-quality planting material confirm the characteristics of the variety and are not going to part with it. They note the excellent varietal taste and appearance, early ripeness and productivity.

In this regard, it is recommended to purchase cuttings and seedlings from winegrowers who confirm the characteristics of the variety, and from them you can look at this hybrid with the harvest.

Did you know? Grapes contain many antioxidants that help prolong youth and protect against cancer. Most of them are found in black and red varieties of grapes, which have a rich color due to anthocyanins, which give them a bright color.

The Giovanni grape variety is a frost-resistant hybrid with average resistance to diseases, tasty dark cherry large berries of an interesting shape. However, you should approach the purchase of planting material responsibly.

Fruit quality

The berries look very juicy. The fleshy flesh of the Giovanni contains several seeds and is encased in a tough, edible skin. The taste of the variety is harmonious, with a light nutmeg aroma. A large berry weighing up to 12 grams can hang on the vine for a long time without changing its appearance. It is elongated in shape with a pointed bottom. The flowers are bisexual. Sometimes the grapes become raisinized. The plucked bunch, thanks to its durable peel, is characterized by high transportability. It does not lose its presentation when shaken in a car, does not rot, or crack.
