Strawberry variety Eliane - features of planting and care

Most Dutch strawberry varieties are distinguished by high productivity and excellent taste of the berries. The Eliane strawberry, created by the Dutch breeder Albert Konings in 1998, has performed well in the Russian climate. Its early ripening period (several days earlier than Elsanta), interesting taste and presentation attract gardeners.

Description of the variety

The Eliane variety has gained popularity and is distributed throughout Europe. German farmers highlight the good taste and give the assortment 4 points for yield and fruit size. Dutch experts give the variety even higher ratings - “excellent” in three main indicators: taste, size, yield.

Bushes

Eliane is a powerful, tall plant with high growth vigor, large glossy light green leaves. In the heat they can curl up, but this does not affect productivity. The adaptation is average. Erect peduncles are thick, growing either at the level of the leaves or slightly higher. While the fruits are immature, the flower stalks are held straight; as the fruits ripen, they bend.

Berries

Uniform, slightly elongated berries (similar to Truffle candies) have an excellent presentation. At first they are bright scarlet in color, then they darken and become bright red. The pulp is light red, of moderate density, allowing the fruit to be transported without loss of quality and stored for a long time in the refrigerator. The berries are easily separated from the stalk when harvesting; the sepals are slightly protruding. Eliane's amber is magical, shimmering with floral strawberry, fruit and floral notes. The taste is excellent, with moderate sourness, highly dependent on agricultural cultivation technology.

The mass of berries is a controversial issue. In one garden it may be 20 g, in another - 50 g and even more. Climate, soil composition and care play a huge role. The berries of the first wave are larger, but subsequent harvests are also of high quality. The variety is distinguished by its maximum yield of class 1 fruits.

Productivity

Strawberries have extended, stable fruiting, with gradual extension of peduncles as the berries ripen. The first harvest is harvested very early, in the second half of May. In the southern regions even earlier. The potential of the variety allows you to collect about 2 kg of berries from a bush. In the south, the hybrid, under certain combinations of weather conditions, manifests itself as a remontant variety, but Eliana belongs to the KSD varieties.

Diseases and pests

Thanks to the efforts of breeders, Eliane garden strawberries are resistant to the following diseases:

  • gray rot;
  • powdery mildew;
  • most viral diseases that can affect other strawberry varieties.

Fighting strawberry mites - video

One of the pests that attack these strawberries may be mites that eat the foliage, as a result of which the fruits become sharply smaller. After the entire harvest has been harvested, the bushes need to be treated with Karbofos.

Other “harmful” bugs that can settle on this berry crop are strawberry beetles, whiteflies and weevils. You can fight them with drugs such as Karbofos and Atkara.

a brief description of

A special feature of the Eliane strawberry is its long fruiting period and early ripening. The fruits are fragrant, beautiful and tasty. The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions. The size of the crop and its quality depend on the soil, climate, watering, humidity and even terrain.

Advantages of the variety

  • large fruits with intensive agricultural technology;
  • excellent taste and incomparable aroma;
  • beautiful appearance of fruits that retain their quality for a long time;
  • very early maturation;
  • long fruiting period;
  • high immunity to diseases;
  • high educational ability.

Disadvantages of the variety

  • does not tolerate drought well; regular soil moisture is required;
  • if the summer is marked by prolonged rains, the taste deteriorates significantly;
  • does not tolerate extreme weather conditions (recurrent frosts, high temperatures in summer);
  • by the end of the season the fruits become significantly smaller.

If you choose a good place for planting the Eliane seedlings and regularly care for them, you can get a stable harvest, despite the listed disadvantages.

Productivity of strawberry variety Eliane

In one plot, this strawberry can be grown for up to 7-8 seasons, and the yield does not decrease and the berries do not become smaller.

From one plant during the fruiting period you can collect up to 2 kg of ripe fruits. The weight of one Eliane strawberry can reach 90g.

Landing

Eliane strawberries bloom and ripen very early, so it is preferable to plant a plantation in the fall. This is especially true for the southern regions, where the rapid onset of heat will not allow seedlings to successfully adapt. In extreme conditions, Eliane will begin to get sick.

The hybrid develops well in sunny areas, protected from northern and northwestern winds. The soil should be loose and fertile. Loamy, sandy loam, forest chernozem is suitable. It is recommended to add compost and river sand to heavy clay soil.

The soil is prepared in advance. They do a deep digging of the area. For one square meter it is necessary to add a bucket of well-rotted manure, 120 g of superphosphate and 45 g of potassium fertilizer.

Strawberries will feel great after cereals, garlic, and dill. The plantation is established for no more than 4 years, after which the strawberries are uprooted and green manure is sown on the site. After 2 seasons, Eliana can be returned to her place.

Planting seedlings can be done according to one of the proposed schemes:

  • The bush scheme assumes a distance between plants of 25-40 cm. For ease of care, 40 cm are left between the rows. With this method, the mustache is trimmed several times a season.
  • With a strip pattern, the distance between the rows is increased to 100 cm, where the mustache is subsequently taken. Next year the additional strip will produce a harvest.

Young plants must be watered with warm water, otherwise their development will be slowed down.

Rules for planting seedlings in the ground

So, we looked at the photo and description of the Eliane strawberry variety, and now let's look at the rules for growing the crop. Let's start with the fact that infertile soil has a bad effect on plant development. Eliane loves light soil with low acidity. Sandy or loamy soil is ideal. Eliane seedlings are planted in garden beds. To prepare them, dig up the ground well. 30 g of mineral fertilizers and organic matter are applied per 1 m2 of beds. The loose soil is given time to settle, after which they begin to mark the rows.

Eliana digs a hole under each bush. Humus is added to the soil, watered well and the seedling is lowered. The roots of the plant are crushed with loose soil, then it is carefully compacted with your hands and watered again. To prevent moisture from quickly evaporating, the ground around the seedling is covered with a thin layer of sawdust.

Gardeners adhere to two schemes for planting Eliane seedlings:

  • The bush scheme involves planting strawberry seedlings in increments of 15 to 25 cm. At the same time, the row spacing is maintained within the range of 40–60 cm. The mustaches are cut off from the plants three times a season.
  • The strip planting scheme for Eliane strawberries involves leaving wide row spacing up to 90 cm in size. Seedlings are planted in rows, keeping a step of 20 to 30 cm. When the strawberry bushes grow mustaches, they are taken to the side and dug in between the rows. This creates a new stripe.

With any planting scheme for Eliana strawberries, the yield indicator does not change. However, according to observations, the bush method allows you to get larger berries. This is due to the fact that the plant does not spend its energy on the formation and development of mustaches, because they are constantly trimmed.

Growing and care

When you want to get tasty and juicy Eliana berries, you need to be patient and follow the care recommendations.

Watering

The frequency of irrigation is determined by the amount of natural precipitation and ambient temperature. Typically, in hot weather, watering is carried out once every 5-7 days. Eliane is fine with the sprinkling irrigation method in early spring, during the growing season.

When flowers appear and fruits ripen, watering is done at the root. The water jet washes away the pollen and causes rot of the fruit.

Loosening, weed control

The soil around Eliane bushes should be kept loose. Weeds must be removed promptly. Periodic loosening is required when mulching material is not used. Mulch made from straw or sawdust prevents weeds from growing and conserves moisture. At the end of the season, the mulch is dug up between the rows and a highly nutritious top dressing is obtained.

Black agrofibre is a new type of effective mulching. It is necessary to cover the entire bed, planting seedlings in the cut holes.

Removing a mustache

With the help of whiskers, Eliane reproduces well. If seedlings are not needed, the tendrils are cut off immediately after they appear, as they deplete the main bush. You cannot prune in rainy weather, or pull out the stump; it is better to leave a stump measuring 3-4 cm.

Top dressing

The Eliane variety is fertilized three times per season:

  • in the spring during the formation of the bush (emphasis on nitrogen fertilizers);
  • during the period of fruit ovation;
  • at the end of the harvest.

The best fertilizer is a complex fertilizer with a large range of nutrients. The plant responds well to organic matter (manure or compost) and leaf feeding with microfertilizers.

Pest and disease control

Problems may arise with powdery mildew, strawberry mites and aphids. Use chemical Preparations should be strictly according to the instructions, before fruit formation or after harvesting. Folk remedies, such as an infusion of onion peels, garlic, a mixture of soda and laundry soap, can be used at any time.

To prevent strawberries from getting sick, you need to choose sunny places for planting, remove weeds and ensure that the soil remains fertile.

Preparing for winter

For the winter, the strawberry plantation is covered with a thick layer of straw and compost mulch. Spunbond can be used for covering on low arches. The plant's winter hardiness allows it to tolerate sub-zero temperatures down to 15℃ if the winters are snowy.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Eliane is on the list of those varieties about which more bad things can be said than good. This is primarily caused by the capriciousness of Dutch strawberries. But first, let's talk about its strengths. The main advantages of Eliane are:

  1. If you grow Eliana's strawberries in suitable conditions, she will show quite strong immunity, which will protect her from a number of common diseases.
  2. The variety retains commercial quality for several days after harvest.
  3. Berries have a universal purpose. They can not only be processed and consumed fresh, but also frozen.
  4. Strawberries are well transported over long distances without losing their marketable qualities.
  5. Most of the harvested crop is suitable for sale on the market.
  6. Strawberries are suitable for growing both at home and on an industrial scale.

As for the disadvantages, these include the following:

  1. The variety adapts rather poorly to heat. Strawberries cannot withstand even short-term droughts. Under such conditions, a significant reduction in yield is observed.
  2. With insufficient watering, the berries begin to become very small.
  3. As well as drought, Eliane does not tolerate conditions of high humidity. If you flood the plant or the season turns out to be very rainy, the berries will become tasteless. The sweetness will disappear and the acid will begin to dominate instead.
  4. Heat also has a bad effect on the quality of berries. Not only do they become significantly smaller, but they also bake heavily in the sun. They can still be eaten, but the taste of baked berries will be far from dessert.

Reviews

I like “Eliana” for its early ripening and aromatic, sweet fruits. If we compare it with popular varieties, I like the taste even better than Clery, and in terms of yield it’s something comparable to Marmolada. The adaptation is excellent, it is easy to propagate the variety yourself. For example, the same Evi 2, I haven’t been able to reproduce for many years, it doesn’t produce a mustache at all.

Eliane's flower stalks form gradually, which allows you to enjoy the berries for a long time. First, one peduncle grows, then, when the berries are already filled, 2 more peduncles appear. This feature allows you to get large fruits, the bush has enough strength to pull out the harvest. What else I would like to note is that Eliane is a one-day variety, but in some years it shows signs of remontancy, blooming in the fall. It bears fruit better in partial shade than in full sun. In the heat it quickly withers and practically does not grow.

The originators recommended growing strawberries of the Eliane variety for personal consumption and for commercial purposes. However, farmers have an ambiguous attitude towards the hybrid. Businessmen are not satisfied with average yields. The hybrid has good reviews from gardeners in the southern regions, central Russia and Siberia, who grow Eliane for personal consumption.

Weed treatment and watering techniques

The frequency of watering is determined individually, taking into account the climatic characteristics of the growing zone, soil quality and a number of other factors. If the soil on which the strawberries grow is too dry, it must be additionally moistened. Gardeners say that the most optimal time to water a plant is early morning or afternoon. Before the flowering period, while the Eliane plantation is still small, watering can be done using a watering can. If the area has grown to a considerable size, the strawberries can be watered using a hose. The drops that fall from Eliane's foliage will help collect dust from the plant.

Important advice! Gardeners recommend watering the strawberry variety exclusively with warm water. Otherwise, temperature changes can slow down its growth and development.

It is recommended to remove weeds from strawberry beds as they grow. After all, they draw out moisture and can cause the death of the plant. Gardeners advise periodically loosening strawberry beds by about 10 cm, regardless of whether there are weeds on it or not. With the help of loose soil, you can provide a steady flow of oxygen to the roots of the plant.

If the plantation of a variety is large enough, it can be difficult to manually control the presence of weeds. In this case, herbicides will help. It is recommended to spray Eliana with them no later than 2 weeks before the final planting of strawberries in the ground.

Collection and storage

The harvested crop is easy to store. Strawberry fruits are used to prepare winter supplies:

  • preserves and jams;
  • compotes and juices;
  • candied fruits and dried fruits.

In addition to heat treatment, strawberries are frozen. In this form, the product is stored for a very long time.

According to gardeners, the Eliane strawberry variety is distinguished by high winter hardiness with good shelter, unpretentiousness in cultivation, and high resistance to painful microbes. In addition, the value of the crop lies in its high yield and long-term fruiting, which is why it is actively cultivated in private garden plots and agricultural lands.

History of selection and region of growth

The variety of Dutch selection, obtained in 1998, is not remontant, but is characterized by long-term fruiting. Sometimes it is called Eliana, or Eliani, sometimes the prefix “frigo” is present. The latter means the technology of freezing planting material. Eliane successfully endures it. The variety is used on personal plots and for small businesses. A continental climate suits it.

Did you know? The Moors in the Pyrenees were the first to cultivate strawberries in the gardens. Then from Spain the cultivated berry came to France and quickly spread to other European countries.
