What is the artificially bred variety called?

The blue rose, obtained in Japan using genetic modifications, went on sale under the Applause brand. At the moment, these roses are not available to collectors and are not registered. On the website of the sales company Suntory Flowers, photographs of blue roses show flowers of a soft purple color (we wrote about purple roses here). For flower growers, purchasing such a rose for the purpose of growing is not available.

What are blue roses

Until recently, a rose of this shade was considered a fantastic flower that could only be found in fairy tales and legends. There is practically no blue color in nature; green and all kinds of shades of red dominate. Through selection, scientists bred a blue rose, and it became a symbol of dreams. It is given to mysterious but optimistic people who do not lose faith in a bright future.

Do they exist in nature?

Blue rose flowers do not exist in nature. They were first released in Japan in 2008. This phenomenon was preceded by the discovery of an American scientist. In 2004, he managed to isolate a special enzyme that, when interacting with bacteria, turned them blue. As a result of the discovery, genetic engineering became interested in the find, suggesting great success and originality of blue flowers.

Until 1930, there was no scarlet rose; this is also the creation of human hands. With the help of genetic modifications, varieties of bright shades of red were developed. The experiments did not end there. Now on the market for these products you can find green and even black roses, and the Internet is replete with pictures with rainbow pink buds or flowers of acidic shades.

How to grow

Through much research and experimentation, geneticists managed to obtain a stable gene that gives the rose its color. To do this, a gene from pansies called delphinidin was added to the resulting enzyme. The result was strengthened by hybridization with a gene from iris. The first flowers of this original shade were named Suntory Blue Rose in honor of the Japanese company that sponsored the project.

They went on sale 3 years later, in 2011. The initial price started at $20 for 1 flower. Many attempts have been made to grow blue roses at home. In pursuit of profit, people sold ordinary roses painted with blue pigment as original ones. They poured a blue solution, etc. However, this method of staining is temporary and does not guarantee sufficient color depth. It is impossible to grow such a rose at home today.

How to grow from an ordinary one?

Inventory

At home:

  • Container for solution.
  • Ink.
  • Wooden or plastic stick.
  • Dye.

For open ground:

  • Copper sulfate or copper objects.
  • Potassium permanganate.
  • Food colorings.

Which variety should I choose?

For growing in open ground, you can choose a variety with petals that are as close to the blue shade as possible - Rhapsody in blue. You can also choose any variety with dark burgundy flowers. Through some manipulations it is possible to obtain a flower with deep blue petals.

At home, any variety of indoor rose with white petals is suitable for transformation.

Blue roses are almost always available in large flower shops , and they can also be brought to order. The cost of one flower in Moscow is approximately 250-270 rubles, in St. Petersburg 230-250 rubles.

Landing

  1. Planting should be done when the soil warms up to 10-15 degrees.
  2. Inspect the root system of the seedling, cut off damaged roots, and cut healthy ones by 1-2 cm so that a healthy white core is visible. This will help the plant take nutrients from the soil more easily. Roots that are too long need to be shortened to 30 cm.
  3. Inspect the shoots. Remove too thin and broken ones. Trim very long branches to a height of 30 cm. Leave the strongest shoots, cutting them to five buds at an angle of 45 degrees.
  4. Dip the seedlings up to the root collar for three hours in a growth stimulator solution.

  5. In open ground, the place for planting roses should be protected from the wind and well lit. If grown indoors, it is best to place the container with the rose on a south-facing windowsill.
  6. The soil for roses should be slightly acidic. If the soil available on the site does not meet this indicator, it needs to be corrected; for planting in a pot, you can use a purchased soil mixture for roses.
  7. For planting in the garden, a hole for seedlings is made 40-60 cm wide and 50 cm deep, compost with two tablespoons of ash is poured onto the bottom, and fertile soil is poured on top. For an indoor rose, place drainage at the bottom of the pot and add a little soil mixture.
  8. Place the roots of a garden rose in a mixture of clay and fertilizer and place the seedling in the center of the hole, spreading the roots. Fill the hole with soil and carefully compact it around the plant. Carefully place the indoor rose in the center of the pot, cover the seedling with soil, slightly short of the edge of the pot.
  9. Water the planted rose generously.

In order for roses to begin to acquire a blue tint, during the planting process you need to bury any copper objects near the root system. Small ones for potted roses, larger ones for garden roses. For this method, the original color of the rose must be white.

Care

The most important stage in caring for a rose bush, the flowers of which are planned to turn blue, is watering. This is where the technology for creating custom coloring lies.

In order for the petals of a white rose to acquire a blue tint, it is necessary to regularly moisten the rose with a solution of copper sulfate . It is important to remember that this method is only suitable for garden varieties.

In order to get a blue flower from a rose, the variety of which initially implies a burgundy color, you need to water it with a solution of potassium permanganate, observing the proportion - a few crystals per glass of water. This should be done at the very beginning of the formation of buds.

If you increase the amount of potassium permanganate, you can get almost black flowers.

Rose is a heat-loving plant , so the most comfortable temperature for it is +25 degrees. It can withstand high temperatures, but this threatens to burn out the flowers.

Once every two weeks it is necessary to add special nutritional compositions. Feeding will help the plant develop harmoniously, gain green mass and bloom profusely.

When will the buds turn blue?

Roses will begin to acquire a lasting blue tint within two weeks after the start of coloring procedures.

What to do if they don't turn blue?

If the pigment was added using food coloring, you can try a different brand of dye composition .

If the rose does not turn blue after manipulation with copper sulfate or potassium permanganate, in no case should you increase the dose of the drugs.

This will have a detrimental effect on the root system of the rose. If you still haven’t been able to get the blue color, but the idea of becoming the owner of heavenly roses still lingers, you can make a cut and paint the petals with a water-based aerosol can . The result is a magnificent decorative effect.

Are there blue roses?

Blue phlox

The most popular varieties of roses, the shade of whose petals are close to blue, include:

  • Blue Girl - lavender roses;
  • Blue Nile - lilac flowers;
  • Lady X - pink and purple plants with thorns;
  • rose Blue Parfum - lilac-raspberry roses;
  • Cool Water - lilac-blue flowers (main blue shade);
  • Charles De Gaulle - plants with dark lavender petals.

For your information! In ordinary open ground, blue flowers with thorns cannot grow.

Dark blue roses have a long flowering period. The buds, which have a pointed shape, slowly open. Beautiful flowers are naturally endowed with a subtle, but very pleasant aroma. The lavender and lilac hues of the petals provide the perfect contrast to the semi-glossy green foliage.

Dark blue roses have a long flowering period

Dense branched bushes can reach a height of 70-75 cm. The width of the bush does not exceed 60 cm. Roses look impressive if grown in groups planted along paths. Also, annual low plantings or lawn grass will look great between the bushes. For planting seedlings, sunny areas should be selected. The plant can withstand frosts down to -23°C.

Important! The blue rose should be covered with a wooden cone all winter to prevent the plant from freezing.

High resistance to various ailments is a definite advantage. Blooms in waves for a long time from early June to late October.

How to paint petals yourself?

paint

The optimal choice for the procedure is food coloring.

  1. The composition is diluted according to the instructions.
  2. The solution is applied by watering at least twice a week.
  3. To make the plant more easily tolerate manipulation throughout the coloring process, it needs to be fed regularly.

Ink

To achieve the desired result, the original color of the rose must be white.

  1. The ink must be dissolved in water so that the color of the liquid is one tone darker than the desired color of the petals.
  2. The resulting composition should be watered according to the usual schedule.

Coloring with ink can negatively affect the aroma of the buds.

In ancient times, the blue rose, due to its inaccessibility and mystery, was a symbol of belonging to the royal court. Today, interest in the prickly beauty of the heavenly color does not wane , but, of course, the abundance of techniques with the help of which it became possible to possess such, even if not a natural, miracle from the world of flora can be considered a pleasant moment.

If you want to get an original rose garden-flower garden on your site, then try planting several shades of roses together. Yellow and red, cream and purple, two-color and bright orange buds will look very good next to each other. Unusual green and black roses also coexist well in the flowerbed.

Blue flowers: description of the phenomenon

People have long been accustomed to white, red, pink, orange, yellow, and purple roses. But the coming into fashion of flowers with black or blue petals is still treated as an amazing and incomprehensible phenomenon. From birth, blue roses already exist. They were developed by Japanese scientists.

The plant is genetically modified. The gene for delphinidin, a blue pigment, has been added to the traditional chromosome set. The resulting variety was named Applause. Such flowers are not widely sold, they are expensive, and their color is not pure, but a mixed blue-lilac.

Applause

Flower growers have come up with a cheaper way to get buds of the desired color - tint them through nutrition. The simplest technique is used for already cut standard plants. Immediately after cutting, their stem is soaked in water with blue dye for 12 hours. The higher the concentration of the solution in the container, the brighter the shade will appear on the petals. True, the effect will not be deep and long-lasting. As they wilt in the vase, the flowers will turn pale and stain the water.

Attention! Only white varieties are suitable for this method.

Sometimes ink is added to the water. After a 12-16 hour procedure, the queen of the garden can achieve the desired pure blue rich color. But ink consists of chemical compounds harmful to organic matter. The flowers will smell unpleasant and fade faster.

Advice. It is not difficult to choose the exact color of the petals. It is noticed that after dyeing they become a tone lighter than the water in the container.

Meaning

According to Rudyard Kipling, the blue rose symbolized death. After all, it was impossible to give it to a living bride, since such a flower does not exist in nature.

Then unusual flowers became a sign of an unattainable ideal, to get closer to which you need to spend a lot of effort.

In many nations, these flowers are subconsciously associated with “blue blood”, which flows in the veins of aristocrats and representatives of the royal family. Therefore, unusual flowers personify splendor, royal luxury and divinity - the qualities of people who decide the destinies of entire nations and states.

Japanese experts believe that an exclusive gift is the lot of the chosen few and signifies a person’s desire to lay the whole world at the feet of his beloved.

In ancient times, one could only see this flower in a dream. This is what this dream meant:

  • Cutting a flower is a harbinger of sadness.
  • Seeing a blue rose among bushes with red buds means suffering from unrequited love.
  • Broken or faded - an unsuccessful ending to the novel.
  • To receive blue roses as a gift from a gentleman is a prediction in reality of incomparable happiness from the love of the person who gave the bouquet in a dream.
