A classic rose garden is the dream of many gardeners, but even the most experienced flower lovers do not always find the courage to arrange a rose corner on their site. So where do you start planning your garden?
Roses are considered one of the most capricious ornamental crops, which, however, does not prevent gardeners around the world from admiring the beauty of these flowers and being inspired to create their own compositions.
It should be noted that there is no universal instruction for arranging a rose garden that would be suitable for absolutely any area. However, it is still possible to highlight some general rules and stages of creating such a garden.
Decide on your garden style
Most often, rose gardens are associated with English-style gardens, but with a skillful approach, such a flower garden will organically fit into a garden in the French, Moorish or Chinese style. Less elaborate varieties can even be used in country-style gardens.
Don’t forget that the rose garden should fit harmoniously into the overall appearance of the garden and be combined with other functional areas. Dissonance with the other elements of the site will play a cruel joke on you, so before you take decisive action, think about what accents could be added to the existing picture.

Styles and types
Rose gardens on a summer cottage do not require much effort from summer residents if you approach their creation systematically. First of all, you need to decide how the flower garden will look schematically.

The main reasons for the death of young roses
You can design it in one of the following styles:
- Rose garden-parterre with regular layout. It is a large flower bed of regular geometric shape with decorative edging made of natural or artificial materials. The plants in it are arranged symmetrically, between their rows there are spaces paved or sown with lawn grass. Inside such a rose garden there may be one or several flower beds, for a harmonious combination of which roses of several shades are planted in each. Complementary are conifers and other crops with dim, but attractive-looking leaves. Other brightly flowering plants, except roses, are not used for such plantings.
- Landscape (landscape) rose garden. Suitable for small areas and does not require strict adherence to the order of arrangement of plant elements. The main distinguishing feature is the presence of rose varieties of various shapes, colors and sizes in combination with other flowering crops.

In addition, the rose garden can be of different types, which are divided according to several characteristics.
Depending on what varieties are used in plantings:
- romantic - the best option for a recreation area, which is characterized by a light appearance with flowers of delicate shades and looks great against the backdrop of tall plants;
- ceremonial - performed in the form of a bright and catchy composition of flowers with rich shades that contrast with each other. Crops with bright green foliage add elegance.
By location relative to the area of the site and the surface of the earth:
- one-sided - placed near a wall, fence or other structure and formed according to the following pattern: tall or climbing rose bushes are located in the background, medium-height ones are in the middle, ground cover is located along the edges;
- visible from all sides - suggests plantings of a similar structure, but coming not from the background, but from the center (supports are installed for climbing varieties);
- vertical - made from climbing winter-hardy varieties, supported by arches, gazebos or other small architectural forms;
- rose garden-rock garden - created from ground cover varieties that form a bright fragrant covering in the form of a continuous carpet;
- mobile - formed from rose bushes planted in flowerpots or containers from among the low, abundantly flowering varieties.

Carry out zoning
If you are going to create a rose garden from scratch and have the opportunity to choose locations, think about where the vegetable garden, greenhouses and hotbeds, flower beds, recreation areas, playgrounds, etc. will be located. When arranging a rose garden on a “well-established” site, it often turns out that there may not be an ideal place for roses, and then efforts have to be made to select varieties that, on the one hand, would suit the characteristics of the area, and on the other, The owner liked them and fit into the given style.
Take time to plan the paths and do not forget that they should perform not only a utilitarian, but also a decorative function.
Processing and planting bushes
2-3 strong stems are left on the plants, the rest are cut off at the base. The roots are shortened to 20-30 cm. This will speed up the process of growing new ones.
If the plants are bare-rooted, place a small mound of soil underneath them. The roots are distributed along its slopes and sprinkled with soil. Water and add soil.
Specimens with closed roots are freed from packaging, lowered into a hole, covered with earth with humus, and watered well. After the moisture is absorbed, the hole is covered with peat or soil.
Consider small architectural forms
This issue is worth considering not only because rose bushes look very organic in combination with gazebos and pergolas, but because for some varieties of these flowers the presence of vertical support is a vital necessity.
First of all, here, of course, we are talking about climbing roses, which require mandatory support and therefore are often used for vertical gardening. In parallel with this, it is worth choosing in advance several design options for tying tall roses.
Rosary in modern design
Landscape design occupies one of the key places in the life of a modern person, because the time has already passed when dachas were used only as places for planting potatoes. Nowadays it is a place to relax both body and soul. And not the least role in this is played by the creation of beautiful flower beds. One of the best options is to arrange a rose garden. It can only occupy 10-20 m2 of space, but at the same time be the “highlight” of your garden.
The word "rosary" has Latin roots. Literally translated, “rosarium” means “wreath of roses.”
Indeed, the rose is the queen of the garden. She outshines the rest of the “residents” with her beauty. Growing this crop in the garden has turned into a whole science, it is so demanding.
There are several types of rosaries:
- a romantic or formal garden, viewed from one or many sides;
- vertical;
- alpine slide of roses.
Very often transitional and intermediate types are created.
As for the styles in which the rose garden is decorated, landscape and regular are especially popular. They are determined by the size of the flower garden and the arrangement of flowers in it.
Landscape rose garden
It does not have any strictly defined forms. You can create groups by combining them by color, height or type (short, bushy, weaving). This style does not require a huge territory. The rose garden can perfectly fit on 10 m2.
Regular style
A prerequisite for a regular style is the presence of the correct form of the rosary. Most often it is a square, circle or rectangle, with a edging made of small building material (chips of brick, marble or granite, small pebbles or crushed stone).
Often a lawn is arranged around the rose garden to better highlight the beauty of the flowers. A good solution is also to plant “architectural” cereals. They complement the overall look and create a rustic style. This way the roses look even more majestic.
And, for example, climbing and shrub roses are well suited for creating a hedge. Such a “fence” can be created both around the perimeter of your site and inside it, thus dividing it into zones. For internal “walls” it is advisable to choose small bushes up to 1 m high.
Decide on grouping criteria
If you are planning to plant a large number of roses, it will not hurt you to think about the criterion by which you will arrange them in plantings. This can be done based on:
- group affiliation (ground cover, miniature patios, floribunda, park, climbing, etc.);
- bud shapes (flat, pitcher-shaped, round, cup-shaped, pom-pom, rosette, spherical, etc.);
- shades of color (apricot, lilac, pink, white, yellow, etc.).
When choosing roses for group plantings, be sure to take into account the plants’ wintering requirements. This way, it will be much easier for you to carry out sheltering activities.

Roses Neighbors
The queen of flowers does not need flowerbed partners. You can create gorgeous compositions from roses alone. The gaps can be filled with lawn, and its emerald greenery will serve as a wonderful backdrop for flowers. If, when growing roses in the country and in the garden (photos of examples are in the article), you decide to add other flowers, then you should make a plan in advance.
- Bulbous. Daffodils, hazel grouse, and tulips are actively blooming at a time when roses are just awakening. At the beginning of June, the fading bulbous greens are cut off. The same is done with lilies, which are successfully located in the center of the flowerbed. If you need a border along the rose garden, the hosta is best suited for this role. A low green hedge will perfectly complement the planting of rose bushes.
- With annual plants. When creating a rosary at the dacha, flowers that are harmonious in tone are chosen as neighbors. The dominant plant should be brighter, and the additional ones should be the same color, but in a calmer shade. For example, marigolds will go well with red and burgundy roses. Instead of the latter, you can use cosmos and nasturtium. Light warm-colored roses are replanted with Veronica and Lavater.
Build a tiering system
When planning absolutely any flower garden, you should remember the golden rule of planting height placement - the closer the plan, the lower the plants. If we talk about roses, then in this case the tallest ones (climbing, scrub, tall varieties of park roses) should be located on the farthest background; behind them it is better to place shrubs of more modest sizes (these can be found in many groups) and, finally, in the front In plan, specimens belonging to the groups of the smallest roses are planted (miniature roses, ground cover, patio, polyanthus roses).
Preparatory stage
The best time to plant flowers is in October. This way the roses will have time to take root and bloom earlier next year. Planting holes begin to be prepared in July. First of all, they analyze the type of soil on the site, and then begin to prepare it.
The best soil for roses will be loam with a pH of 5-6. Humus is added to sandy soil, and humus and sand are added to clayey soil. First, the area is cleared of weeds, organic matter is distributed over the surface and dug up. If August is dry, the area is watered. It is advisable to use the sprinkling method.
After the soil has settled, about a month and a half later, the holes are prepared. Dig holes 40 cm deep and the same width.
The distance between the holes depends on the type of roses:
- between miniatures - 30 cm;
- patio - 50 cm;
- hybrid tea - depending on the variety from 50 to 100 cm;
- trunks and bushes - up to 2 m;
- ground cover - 2 m.
Too thick plantings will cause plant diseases. In addition, the bushes, being in the shade, lose some of their foliage, which will affect the overall appearance of the flower garden. Planting too sparsely can lead to the appearance of weeds and overheating of the grass under the scorching sun.
Choose a color scheme
Decide for yourself what color scheme your flower garden will be. It is better to decorate a rose garden that will be admired from afar in contrasting shades, while a flower garden placed in front is recommended to be kept in the same color scheme.
It is worth remembering that when choosing a color scheme, you should always be guided by the rules for combining shades. No matter how much you would like to plant roses with buds of different colors in your area, remember that a flower garden that is too colorful will look tacky. Even experienced landscape designers try to use no more than two or three shades in a composition. You can read about the basic rules of color combinations in our separate material.

DIY rosary. How to plant roses.
- If you are planting rose seedlings with bare roots, first place them in warm water for 12-24 hours. If you cannot plant roses right away, you can leave them for a week in a cool, dark place. At the same time, do not forget to spray the cuttings with water every few days.
- Dig a hole 30cm deep and 60cm wide. Make sure the hole is large enough for further root growth. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a shovel.
- Make a small mound in the center of the hole to support the roots in a stable position. Place the rose on top, making sure the bush's root collar (the point where the stems meet) is at ground level, or slightly lower for colder climates.
- Fill the hole with two-thirds of the remaining soil mixed with peat or compost. Press gently with your hands. Water the bush, let the water soak in, then fill the hole completely with soil. Tamp down gently and water well.
- Mulch the soil around the bush to suppress weed growth and retain moisture. Water 3-4 times a week until leaves begin to grow.
- Your roses will establish themselves faster if you spray the stems with water as often as possible. To thrive, roses need a lot of moisture, both for the roots and the top of the bush.
Select varieties
The correct selection of varieties for the rose garden is already half the battle. It takes gardeners more than one season to understand all the intricacies of caring for roses. That is why experienced flower growers recommend at first giving preference to non-capricious groups of floribunda roses, scrubs and, if space allows, park roses. Some varieties of climbing and hybrid tea roses have also proven themselves well. Although for the most part representatives of the latter group require increased attention. An approximate list of rose varieties that are resistant to disease and do not cause much trouble over wintering is as follows:
Climbing: Alchymist, New Dawn, Flammentanz, Laguna, Mozart's Lady, Parade, Pink Ghislaine de Feligonde, Purple Splash (Purple Splash), Rugelda (Rugelda), Santana (Santana), Vltava (Vltava).
Scrubs: The Dark Lady, James Galway, Crocus Rose, Grace .
Floribunda: Aprikola, Apricot, Easy Does It, Lavender, Leonardo da Vinci, Lions Rose, Meilove.
Hybrid tea: Nostalgie, Gloria Dei, Alexandr, Paul Gauguin, Big Purple.
Preparing for winter
Not all roses need to be covered. Old and specific varieties can easily overwinter on their own. By autumn, their bark becomes coarser, and the plants are able to withstand the cold. Modern remontant varieties need shelter.
Advice from experienced flower growers:
- In August, the bushes are fertilized with phosphorus compounds.
- The tops of the shoots are pinched.
- Starting in September, all excavation work in the rose garden should be stopped. This will reduce the likelihood of the kidneys awakening.
- In October, rose shoots are cut to a third of their length.
Just before frost, plants are covered. In terms of timing, this is approximately the end of October, November. The most suitable are spruce branches, leaves, sawdust, snow. First, you can cover the roses with spunbond, and then cover them with whatever material you have chosen. After the first heavy snowfall has passed, the plants are covered with snow.
Making a rose garden in your summer cottage is not that difficult. And it will bring a lot of pleasure. The main thing is to decide on the layout of the flower garden, think about what plants will be included in the flower beds. The rose is demanding to care for, but the efforts spent will be rewarded with lush flowering and admiring glances from everyone who manages to meet this beauty.
Choose companion plants
When decorating a garden, it is rare that a gardener will prefer to limit himself to one crop. For many years, roses were considered a completely self-sufficient plant that did not need neighbors. However, in recent years, mixed plantings, in which roses are harmoniously combined with other equally spectacular plants, have become increasingly popular.
Accent plants : cereals (fescue, miscanthus, etc.), conifers (arborvitae, junipers), foxglove, mullein.
Background plants : mantle, geranium, hosta, low-growing spirea, dwarf conifers.
Background plants : gypsophila, katran, astrantia, lavender, sage, heuchera.
Clematis, delphiniums, phlox and grapes are considered good companions for roses.

How to beautifully decorate a rose garden at your dacha
Beautiful garden decoration with roses (photo)
It is believed that the rose itself is a decoration and does not need company. But the “queen,” as the rose is recognized, needs a “retinue” in garden design, where it is dominant, and this is not at all a bad option for the overall decorative perception.
If you are a big rose lover, you should create a rose garden in your garden. It is set up in a large open ground area. It is an independent composition that emphasizes the beauty of your site.
When decorating a garden with roses, the rose garden is laid out in a regular or landscape style in the form of a huge flower bed, which is cut into separate sectors by paths. A fountain, pool, sculptures, vases, arches, trellises, pergolas, etc. can be included in the overall composition of the rose garden layout.
As you can see in the photo, for roses in landscape design, the main background on which these plants are placed in appropriate groups can be a lawn:

Evergreens and deciduous shrubs are used to highlight and emphasize individual details.
In the rose garden you can imagine all groups of roses: hybrid tea, polyantha, floribunda, climbing, standard, ground cover, border, miniature and even potted. The goal of displaying the largest assortment of roses in landscape design should not be set. It is necessary to carefully consider and select groups and varieties of plants in such a way as to obtain the greatest decorative effect in the created colorful and voluminous composition.
Before you decorate your rose garden beautifully, decide on the shape of the plantings and the size of the groups. They are determined depending on the scale and nature of the layout of the rose garden; At the same time, the requirements for winter protection must be taken into account. The latter makes it necessary to plant roses in relatively small isolated groups of a simple configuration. Volumetric groups are created from hybrid tea, park and remontant roses in the background. Polyanthus roses should be planted in the foreground in garden landscape design, as they are distinguished by the most abundant and long-lasting flowering. The edge of the rose garden is lined with border roses. If the site has a slope oriented to the south or west, it is appropriate to plant ground cover roses.
Pay attention to the photo - when decorating an area with roses, taking into account the biological and decorative characteristics of these plants, you should not mix groups of rose bushes in plantings:
Groups of rose bushes in the garden plantings in the photo
Along with roses, perennials should also be planted in the rose garden, which will replenish flowering in the early spring and serve as a backdrop for displaying the decorative merits of roses.
Before you start designing a site, you need to carefully think through and weigh everything.
First, you need to assess the capabilities of the area, its illumination, soil conditions, and size. In the design of the site, roses should be given both a bright place protected from the wind and a sufficient amount of nutrition - they suffer if, for example, a tree growing nearby takes away their nutrients and creates shade. Other roses planted too close may also become competitors. Therefore, it is very important to foresee such moments in advance.
As for the design approach, the use of roses provides the broadest possibilities. This is a universal plant for design, and thanks to the huge number of species and varieties, everyone can find their own option that will make the site uniquely beautiful.

Garden landscape design: what plants to plant with roses
Knowing what plants to plant with roses in your landscape design, with the right selection of varieties and companion plants, you can create a wonderful mixborder. And in the spring, while rose bushes have not yet reached the peak of decorativeness, early-flowering bulbous plants - crocuses, snowdrops, scylla, muscaria, etc. - can bloom between them. In the summer, the beauty of roses will not be hindered by ageratum, aubrieta, and rezuha.
Genetically, roses are programmed to live a very long life. An example of this is wild roses (rose hips), whose lifespan is estimated at 500 years.
Cultivated roses, of course, live much shorter - up to 25-50 years, and under insufficiently favorable conditions, even less - 10-15 years.
And in order to extend the life of your favorite roses, enjoying their beauty, drawing strength and vigor from them, using their healing gifts, you must, in addition to proper care, correctly arrange and combine them with other plants.
A rose lover should know that all the colorful variety requires a certain system when planting.
Look at the photo - when designing flower beds with rose varieties, you need to have uniform spots, which should include at least 3 bushes:

At the same time, the overall picture of the rose garden looks like areas of pure white, pure pink, pure red or yellow roses in the photo
At the same time, the overall picture of the rose garden looks like areas of pure white, pure pink, pure red or yellow roses. Mixing different colors in one spot is unacceptable.
In addition, homogeneous spots should match each other in color. So, orange, purple, and pink roses do not go well with red ones.
Red roses in garden design can be separated from the same pink ones by white or cream ones.
Red color is classically combined with green, blue, lilac. Accepted combinations are light pink with light blue, purple with yellow and orange, blue with white.
However, there can be no clear recommendations for the use of roses in garden design. It all depends on imagination, taste and sense of harmony.
