Why you can’t plant Christmas trees on your property: signs, opinions, tips.
Trees planted near a house or on a fruit plot are not only part of the landscape design, but a piece of nature, especially if your house is located in the city. The evergreen beauty does not change color throughout the year, and therefore will delight the whole family all year round, and its aroma will spread throughout the entire perimeter. However, not all trees can be planted on a summer cottage.
Most people are afraid to plant evergreen trees, arguing that green beauties can bring misfortune not only to the house, but also to its owners.
Why you can’t plant Christmas trees on your property, is this statement true?
Whether or not to plant spruce on your own plot is up to everyone to decide for themselves.
There are popular beliefs that make some people think about this issue, here are some of them:
- It is believed that in the summer, the tree takes away positive energy from its owner and from everyone living in his house. In winter, on the contrary, the tree gives off the strength and energy accumulated over the summer. If in winter a person lacks minerals and vitamins, it is recommended to walk near coniferous trees, and there will be no physical decline or vitamin deficiency. Bioenergy will charge you with positive emotions and energy for a long time. However, this is just what they say; it has not been proven from a medical point of view.
- The ancient Slavs believed that spruce brought only misfortune to households. For example, a woman in this house will lose the ability to bear children, and if she gives birth, it will only be a female child. If a single woman lives, it is believed that she will live alone all her life, or will die soon.
These are myths and false information. In past times, coniferous trees were not planted near residential premises for safety reasons.
Spruce trees are highly flammable, and any spark can cause a fire. Previously, many buildings were wooden, so fire destroyed them in seconds, and energy had nothing to do with it.
Typically the Christmas tree grows up to forty meters in height.
If such a tall tree grows next to a house, then in a strong wind the branches can block the chimney, which will lead to the death of the owners from carbon monoxide.
In Ukraine and Russia, few people believe in such superstitions, and Christmas trees are planted in almost every yard. Some trees grow for many decades without causing any problems to people.
About why you can’t plant Christmas trees on your property, about superstitions and signs associated with conifers - in the video:
Popular beliefs
- Before the funeral, the blind soul of the deceased, hovering next to his body, could get lost. Instead of flowers, the path to the cemetery was shown to her by fir branches, which were thrown all the way to her final resting place. On the Zaonezhsky Peninsula they covered the porch and floor in the house of the deceased. They were then collected and burned.
- Ancestors believed in omens that sharp needles prevented the dead from returning home. For the same purpose, the traces of the funeral procession were “covered up” with a prickly broom.
- Stretchers and coffins were made from spruce boards. This was a guarantee that the deceased would not go anywhere from there.
- Residents of Dmitrov near Moscow believe that the fir branches that decorate the front corner and walls of the house before the Trinity contain the souls of their relatives who have passed on to another world.
- Anyone who was not generous enough towards carolers was promised a spruce coffin with an aspen lid for the New Year.
- Coniferous trees were planted on the graves of boys and girls who did not have time to get married due to sudden death.
- Counting fir needles is the responsibility of devils and children cursed for sins against their parents.
Signs associated with blue spruce
There is one sign that came from Finland, where blue spruce was first planted by colonists. People considered it sacred and feared anger. During the harvest, the owner showed the fruit to the tree, and only then collected it.
Some believed that if one spruce branch died, then one of the colonists would also die, and this is what happened.
Of course, this could be a coincidence, but many took it seriously. This continued until all the colonists died. After the tree dried completely, the oldest resident died. However, their descendants remained alive. Since then, the tree has been considered a harbinger of death.
People who do not depend on prejudices and do not look at any predictions live freely and happily plant blue spruce trees, enjoying their beauty and decorativeness.
Planting site and seedling preparation
Particular attention should be paid to the place where the spruce will grow. It should be well lit by the sun. In dark areas the plant will not grow well, moreover, it may simply wither. The place for the spruce must be protected from the winds. The spruce root system is superficial, so strong winds can knock down the tree.
The soil must have good water permeability. Loamy and sandy loam soils are suitable. Loose soil is not suitable for this unstable plant. The condition of such soil is improved by adding clay or sand to it.
Young trees of short stature are chosen for planting. It will be easy to dig up without damaging the root system. In addition, the plant can be easily transported to the desired location. You need to dig up the tree together with a lump of earth; this is done carefully so as not to damage the roots.
Fungi live in the earthen coma, with the help of which the plant absorbs beneficial substances coming from the soil. This is very important for the future development of spruce. Roots with soil can be placed in a bag. The tree can be brought from the forest. But it is better to buy it from a gardening farm. When purchasing a plant, it is important to inspect its roots. They should be healthy and their tips should be white. This indicates their activity.
Is it possible to plant a pine tree in the yard of a private house, signs associated with pine trees on the site
Pine is a very beautiful and useful tree. However, due to popular beliefs, many are afraid to plant it in their yard.
Some believe that with frequent contact with pine, a person loses a lot of energy and vitality. Others say that if there is a pine tree in the yard, discord occurs in families, which ends in divorce.
They say this is because the tree grows alone and drives out all its “neighbors.” Therefore, it is recommended to plant this coniferous tree only in forests.
In fact, pine has a drawback, but it has nothing to do with signs.
Fallen needles oxidize the soil, which negatively affects the growth of other plants.
Therefore, it is not recommended to plant pine next to flower beds or in gardens.
Legends of ancestors
Remembering Baba Yaga and her hut on chicken legs, storytellers claim that it was built on spruce logs and stood on a spruce forest. This hut cannot be cut down, it will definitely take revenge. Here are the first negative points for you, because one of the signs says that after cutting down a spruce, a person dies.
Leshy lives near the hut and steals children who are lost in the forest. Having caught it, he forces them to count the pine needles that fell to the ground.
Spruce trees are evergreen trees, and therefore, it is believed that they do not sleep in either summer or winter. This was the reason for using conifers in magical rituals, supposedly the tree is always endowed with power.
Also, according to legends, suicides, sorcerers and witches, when dying, supposedly remain to live in the trunk of a coniferous tree.
Scientists' opinion on planting coniferous trees near the house
Scientists explain all superstitions logically.
Here are some of their arguments:
- Previously, spruce and pine trees were planted separately. This tree was expensive and very tall, since the branches of other trees grow sideways, but the spruce grows upward. Because of this, during a thunderstorm, the first place lightning strikes is the fir tree, hence the name “killer spruce” or “unfortunate tree.” When the owner wants to plant pine needles on his site, he must take this factor into account and cut off the top for safety.
- Houses in old Rus' were built from wood, which is considered flammable. The presence of a tall tree next to the house, which also caught fire quite quickly, naturally increased the threat of a fire from sparks periodically flying out of the chimney. This is also worth considering.
Scientists explain the loss of strength and energy by the fact that cutting down the crown of a Christmas tree requires a lot of effort and time. Using the same time, four ordinary trees could be cut down.
This explains all the myths and legends, so belief in superstitions is not relevant today.
We invite you to watch a video about the benefits of coniferous trees:
The symbolism of the Christmas tree
In pagan beliefs, this tree is a favorite refuge for evil spirits.
- At the whim of the devil, lost children find a place to sleep under him for the night.
- A brownie lives inside the branch.
- Devils may be hiding in the crown, dragging with them the souls of the so-called “hostage” dead - people who died suddenly or against their will.
For the Finno-Ugric people, spruce is a kind of portal for communication between the worlds of the living and the dead.
The tree was also considered prophetic. It could suggest whether it is worth building a house in the chosen location. To do this, we had to stay overnight under the tree. If a spirit came to a peasant in a dream, he could carry out his plans with a calm soul.
Spruce on the site according to Feng Shui
Feng Shui is an Eastern teaching according to which trees and shrubs that bear fruit or bloom are considered beneficial. The rest, including spruce and pine, have poor energy and negatively affect the condition of the human body.
Single Christmas trees that grow outside the yard are considered the most dangerous, as they will attract negative energy and imbue everything around them with it.
Feng Shui prefers pine over spruce, considering it more positive.
Coniferous plants in modern landscape design
Nowadays, many people do not know about signs, or do not believe in them. For people, a Christmas tree is associated with something positive, beautiful and festive.
Children and adults are often photographed near coniferous trees at any time of the year, and no one was harmed.
Superstitious people are considered weak-willed, because in the event of any misfortune or trouble it is easy to blame everything on a tree, a cat or other signs. Although, each person decides for himself how to live and what to believe.
Spruce trees are often used for landscape design, as they remain green all year round, and this refreshes the area and makes it presentable in any weather.
Coniferous trees can be pruned to create any decoration and shape; they go well with many plants if the fallen needles are collected in a timely manner. Such yards are always attractive and delight others.
So, if a person is afraid and believes in various signs, it is his right, let him not plant spruce. And if a person is free from predictions and superstitions, then he can rest assured that a coniferous tree does not carry negative energy and is absolutely safe!
Where did the belief come from?
Signs and superstitions do not arise out of nowhere.
In the mythology and traditions of the Eastern Slavs, Finno-Ugric tribes and other peoples, coniferous trees were given a special sacred meaning.
Spruce, without whose presence in the house it is impossible to imagine the New Year, was actively used in funeral rites.
This is the tree of the pagan god Veles, who accompanies a person during the transition to the other world.
Instead of a coffin, the Old Believers “runners” placed the dead in a hole dug under the roots of a large spruce tree. This was done secretly, without marking the burial place.
The tree, slightly turned out for this ritual, was returned to where it stood, having buried the roots with earth.
A mention of a funeral under a tree can be found in the Serbian epic song “The Death of Mark Kraljevic.” It also talks about the opportunity to look into a well between two trees and find out everything about your hour of death.
