Description of the best varieties of Martagon lily, planting and care, propagation methods

Lilies are popular plants cultivated since ancient times. In recent years, a species known as curly lily or martagon can be found more and more often on sites.

Lily martagon (Lilium martagon), forest lily, Tsar's curls, Curly lily - a perennial bulbous plant. Without transplantation, it can grow in one place for about 20 years, and the bulbs retain their qualities for 60 years. The bulb is ovoid, scaly, similar to a cone; in light varieties it is golden-yellow, in pink varieties it has purple tips. The stem is powerful, erect, reaches a height of 2 m, slightly pubescent. The leaf blades are oblong, collected in multilayer whorls.

When does the Martagon lily bloom?

  • Abundant flowering occurs in June-July; individual flowers can appear until the end of September.
  • When cut, they remain fresh for a long time, but be warned, the heady aroma can cause headaches.

20-60 medium-sized drooping flowers bloom on one plant. The petals are strongly curved upward, like curled curls. Colors: white, pink, yellow, lilac (and even black) with specks. Most often they are pollinated by nocturnal insects, attracted by their amazing aroma; During the day, butterflies flutter above them.

The name of the plant is translated as “producer of Mars.” An ancient Roman legend says that Juno touched this flower, and then the god of War (Mars) emerged from it. People call this lily saran, saranka, Turkish lily, royal curls.

The martagon lily is not widespread, which is why it is shrouded in an aura of mystery. It would seem that the English name Turkish turban, Turk's cap, which means “turban” in translation, gives a reference to the East, but in reality everything is not so. The natural habitat of the martagon lily is the meadows and forests of the temperate zone of Eurasia. It can be found in Siberia, the Caucasus, northern Asia Minor and Mongolia, where it often reaches mountain peaks.

The plant is hardy and frost-resistant.

Description

Lily Martagon or curly lily is a long-lasting plant; it can be grown for more than 10 years in one bed.
Lily martagon description:

  • The height of plants is sometimes surprising. There are specimens up to two meters. On powerful, hardy stems there are whorled leaves that glisten in the sun.
  • Turban-shaped flowers surprise even experienced gardeners with their varied colors. There are white, yellow, orange, cherry, purple. But the beauty is not flashy, but rather graceful.
  • The flowers are spreading; one plant can have up to 5-10 large flowers with pronounced specks. Flowering begins in June and continues until the second half of July.
  • Most often, the Martagon lily is used for single plantings, but it also looks great in a group of plants. The main thing is to plant it in the background, carefully considering the design.
  • Lilies are frost-resistant, although there is nothing surprising here. After all, the ancestors of Martagon lived for centuries in the wild nature of harsh Siberia. Locals call the lily sarana, saranka, cuckoo's tears.

Landing place

When growing martagon lilies, you should recreate conditions close to natural ones. Most often they grow on forest edges: choose areas with sliding shadow or bright sunlight, but in the morning and evening hours. Well-moistened soils allow cultivation with constant access to sunlight.

The soil required is nutritious, with good drainage, neutral or slightly acidic. Loamy soils are excellent.

Curly lily reproduces by seed and vegetatively.

Diseases and pests

Martagons do not perceive viruses, but they often suffer from fungal diseases, botrytis, for example, which is difficult to treat. Prevention is carried out against such a disease and lilies are treated with a solution of Fundazol, Oxychrome or Fitosporin. This is done twice a year - at the beginning of the year and before the flowers appear. When the first signs of fungus appear, the plant needs to be treated with a preparation that contains copper.

Flowers are often attacked by lily beetles - small red insects that feed on leaves and stems. Chemicals against Colorado potato beetles - Commander, Tanrek, Corado and others - help to overcome them.

The lily fly is another danger for buds that haven’t even bloomed yet. At this stage of development they can be destroyed by the pest. For safety in May, it is better to spray the shoots with Aktara.

Growing martagon lily from seeds

Martagon lily seeds photo

This method of propagation is most often used by breeders to create new or propagate rare varieties.

How to collect seeds

Seeds are mainly purchased at specialized sales points. To collect them yourself, you must first help with pollination. Using a brush, transfer pollen from one plant to another; the pollinated pistil must be wrapped in foil. Remove the seeds from the seed pods, dry them and place them in the refrigerator.

How to sow in the ground

Lily martagon from seeds in open ground photo of seedlings

In open ground, plants develop rather slowly. Sow small seeds shallowly, up to 1 cm, before winter or early spring. In the first year, a stalk 10-20 cm high appears with approximately one rosette of leaves. It even happens that shoots appear in the 2-3rd year of growth. Before this, the root system develops. Flowering can be seen in the 5-7th year of cultivation. Therefore, most often bulbs from seeds are grown indoors.

Growing seedlings

  • In the spring (late February-early March), the seeds are mixed with a nutrient substrate (sphagnum moss, charcoal, peat) and placed in a zip bag, kept at room temperature for 2.5-3 months, periodically ventilated.
  • When the bulbs are formed, the martagons should be kept in the refrigerator for another 3 months.

  • As soon as the leaves appear, they are planted in containers or planted directly in the ground.
  • Planting in open ground is carried out in the fall using the transshipment method, and is covered for the winter to protect it from frost.

How to plant?

Before you start a lily in your garden, you should familiarize yourself with the rules of planting and care, which are very important if gardeners do not want their work to be done in vain.

When and where to plant?

Planting is carried out at the end of summer, when it is still warm and not too hot. You can also carry out this procedure in early September. Choose a place where there are no strong drafts; an area under trees is perfect.

It is recommended to plant Martagon lilies near other lily hybrids. They are looking for a higher place so that the sun's rays reach the young plant. The wells are pre-prepared.

Preparation of planting material

They buy planting material in special stores and monitor the quality of the bulbs. It is very important to pay attention to this in order to have success after planting.

Damaged bulbs will simply rot in the ground. The surface is smooth and not too wet. Finding good specimens can be very difficult, since this variety is rare and is almost not on sale.

How to plant?

The planting process requires care and quality execution. Before planting the bulb in the ground, it is pre-treated with a solution of “Fundazol”.

The holes dug should be 2.5-3 bulbs deep to leave room for future young specimens and stems.

The soil dug out of the hole is mixed with mineral fertilizers and ash. Afterwards, humus is added to the mixture so that at first the plant feeds on substances from the soil.

The roots must be carefully straightened and inspected again for the presence of defects. The onion is sprinkled with the resulting mixture and humus is also added on top.

Water the planting site well and allow the water to soak in; too much watering will be harmful to the lily. With the arrival of cold weather, the soil around the planting site is mulched, but not covered.

Vegetative propagation

Martagon lily bulbs photo

Vegetative propagation involves growing bulbs from scales, as well as separating daughter bulbs from the main one.

Let's take a closer look:

  1. Separate several upper scales from the mother bulb, rinse, and treat with a fungicidal preparation (you can use a solution of potassium permanganate). Place in damp moss, provide warmth (room temperature is sufficient) and diffuse lighting. A new bulb will appear in about 2 months. It will be small - grow it in a wide container with nutritious soil, which is dug into the soil on the site for the winter (be sure to cover it with dry peat, leaves, spruce branches). In the spring, plant it in a permanent growing location. Flowering will occur in the 3-4th year of growth.
  2. Separating daughter bulbs is the most popular method. Dig up the bush, carefully separate the bulbs, and plant them.

Methods of propagation of the lily Tsar's curls

The curly lily is propagated in several ways:

  • leaves;
  • scales;
  • stems;
  • dividing the bulbs.

Leaves

The axils of the leaves contain seeds. After the leaves die, the bulbs fall into the ground, and after a year they begin to germinate. After this, sprouts with a weak root system appear near the main flower. And after another year, one leaf is formed from the sprouted bulbs. Only after 3 years the lily will begin to produce a stem. And when the plant reaches 5 years of age, a very beautiful flower will appear on it.

Scales

Using this method, you can get from 20 to 50 flowers from one planted bulb, so this method is considered the simplest and fastest. Scales should be prepared in spring and summer, and reproduction should begin in the fall. This method is characterized by dividing the bulb into scales. After separating the scales, they must be placed in a powder fungicide for a short period of time or washed in a pink solution of potassium permanganate.

Reproduction of lilies by scales

After this procedure, they need to be dried, and then placed in the soil at 2/3 of the height and covered with sand. The first shoots can be expected after 8 weeks. Over time, small bulbs are formed, which continue to grow to the size of an adult bulb.

Stems

Propagation by cuttings is carried out in a very unusual way. At the beginning of the procedure, you need to prepare a box that will contain humus, sand and peat chips. A piece of stem with a dormant bulb should be planted in this mixture.

If the stem is whole, then it must be fixed in a groove in a horizontal position up to 15 cm deep; the groove must be filled in so that the top of the stem remains outside.

When planting has been done, the soil must be moistened. After a month, a root will form at the stem, and bulbs will form in the axils. After ripening, the bulbs need to be separated and planted in the chosen place for ripening. It is important to remember that the box with the stems should be in a warm and bright place.

Dividing the bulbs

Dividing bulbs is one of the most difficult methods of propagation. This process is carried out only when the flower has grown greatly. Then it is dug up, divided into parts and planted in different parts of the garden.

When and how to plant

The most favorable period of time for planting martagon bulbs in open ground is the end of summer and beginning of autumn. Please note that the sprouts will appear in early spring - they may need protection from frost. First (a couple of weeks before planting), dig up the area, add rotted manure, leaf compost, rotted manure, wood ash and complex mineral fertilizer to a depth of 25 cm.

  1. Before planting, treat the bulbs with a fungicide (for example, foundationazole).
  2. Make planting holes, build a small elevation, place the bulbs, straightening the roots, sprinkle with soil (which was removed from the hole), add a mixture of soil and compost on top, water well.
  3. The planting depth of the bulbs should be 20-25 cm.

Planting martagon lilies in spring video:

How to water

The plant will require moderate watering, and the soil should be wet to the depth of the bulbs. Water as the top layer of soil dries out; do not allow it to become waterlogged.

Mulching and fertilizing

Mulch the surface of the soil with compost or humus. This will perform several functions at once: it will help maintain soil moisture, serve as nourishment for the plant and protect it from frost.

The plant needs feeding. Use complex mineral fertilizers. Apply the first in early spring (focus on the proportion of nitrogen); the second - during the budding period (add more phosphorus); the third - after the end of flowering (phosphorus fertilizers will be required).

In all three cases, you can use a solution: for 5 liters of water, 1 teaspoon of Kemira-lux and 1 ampoule of the drug Epin.

Trimming

At the end of flowering, trim the peduncle, and multi-tiered leaves will decorate the area until late autumn. At this time, the bulb strengthens. When the leaves turn yellow, cut the stem to the very root.

Description of the Guinea Gold lily

Lily Guinea Gold belongs to the most mysterious subspecies of lilies - Martagon. Little is known about them. They recently began to settle in Russian gardens. But the variety, bred from wild species, is characterized by a high degree of resistance to weather conditions, including negative temperatures up to 40 degrees, and moisture deficiency. Thanks to these characteristics, they can be grown throughout Russia.

Interesting fact! Martagons have many names. Curly, saranka, Turkish, two-row lilies. But if previously almost all varieties that had a turban-shaped inflorescence were called this, today they are increasingly divided into subspecies depending on the height of the bushes and the color of the buds. In terms of its characteristics, the Guinea Gold lily is closest to two-row martagons.

According to photos and descriptions of breeders, the Guinea Gold lily is a perennial shrub plant, reaching a height of 1.4-1.5 m. The stems are hard, rich green, with a slight pubescence of a grayish tint. Long and narrow lanceolate-shaped leaves are collected in whorls, from which flower stalks appear.

The Guinea Gold lily grows from bright yellow bulbs with close-fitting scales. Their diameter is 5-6 cm. Unfortunately, the tubers form a root system over several years, and only then the flower appears in all its glory. There is also a positive aspect here. A powerful root system allows the plant to extract nutrients and moisture from the deep layers of the soil.

Lily Guinea Gold is absolutely unpretentious. It grows on almost any soil, with the exception of highly oxidized ones. Plants can be planted in shaded areas, under trees, or near the walls of buildings and structures. It does not require shelter for the winter. What you should pay attention to when planting is the level of groundwater, since the bulb and roots of lilies are located at a depth of 25 cm, which can lead to soaking and death of tubers.

Storing martagon bulbs before autumn planting

High-quality planting material (bulbs) can be found on sale in the spring (bulbs from last year's harvest are sold in the fall), but autumn planting is preferable for the plant. To ensure that the bulbs do not lose their quality by the time of planting, they should be stored correctly.

  • Wrap each bulb in several layers of paper, place in a cardboard box and store in a dry, dark place with an air temperature of 2-8 °C.
  • Another option: plant in a container with peat, deepened by 20 cm, store in a cool room.

What you shouldn't forget

Now it's time to talk about the disadvantages of the martagon lily. Experts include the following characteristics of the plant:

  1. Slow bulb formation and poor budding. As a result, planting material becomes too expensive and unaffordable for amateur gardeners.
  2. With the onset of autumn, bare stems stick out unsightly in the flowerbed. But you can't touch them. Otherwise, flowering next year will deteriorate sharply. This nuance can be played up by planting other flowers with lush foliage next to the martagon.
  3. After planting in the garden, you should not wait for fruiting from the lily for the first 2 years.
  4. Replanting is destructive for this type of flower. They love familiar places.

Additional recommendations

In addition to general care parameters, pay attention to the following points:

  • The plant does not like transplants: the roots are often damaged and grow back slowly. Immediately plant them in a permanent place of growth; in one place they grow well for 20 years.
  • If planted shallowly, the plant will be stunted and the flowers smaller.
  • Usually, young bulbs “self-burrow” into the soil, to facilitate this process, the area should be kept loosened, and keep a distance of about half a meter between plants.

Description and characteristics

The plant is quite tall, its size reaches two meters. The petals of almost all flowers are curved back, which gives them volume. These flowers arrived in Europe many years ago, and new hybrids are still being developed, which are actively used to decorate gardens, alleys and parks. Usually the plants grow nearby, and they form something like bushes. Martagon lilies can grow in the same place for more than 10 years.

Also, cut flowers may not fade for a long time, but it is not recommended to place a vase in the house; the strong smell often makes you dizzy. There is a sugary sweet aroma. This hybrid can grow both in sunny areas and in the shade.

Lily Martagon in landscape design

Lily martagon in landscape design photo

Martagon lilies are self-sufficient in solo plantings: they will become a bright accent against the background of a green lawn (it is better to use varieties of red, orange colors), due to their tallness they will serve as a decoration for the background, and can be used to frame gazebos, fences, and ponds.

They fit into any design style and are combined with many plants.

Martagon lilies in garden design photo

White Martagon lilies look elegant against the background of coniferous shrubs and trees. Low thujas, cypresses, and junipers will create a sliding shadow, and fallen pine needles will become mulch for the lily.

Pink lilies go well with peonies, astilbe, ferns, and fuchsias. Yellow ones harmonize with daffodils, primroses, tulips, and bright shrubs: barberry, rhododendron, euonymus.

A spectacular, one might say classic, combination of lilies and roses is obtained.

Planting, care and propagation

When planting bulbs, you need to pay attention to choosing the location for the future growth of martagon. Such lilies feel great in the shade of tall trees. They do not like direct sunlight. Therefore, it is recommended to choose shaded areas for planting.

Shaded areas are selected for planting. The illustration for the article is used under the standard license ©dachnyedela.ru

All other parameters of the landing site are not important. Saranka is not afraid of winds, drafts and frosts. It easily tolerates even the lowest temperatures. No wonder the flower grows well in Siberia.

The soil can also be anything. The plant feels great on light sandy or peat soils, and on heavy clay substrates. Acidic, neutral and alkaline soil is suitable for locusts.

The procedure for planting bulbs must be carried out carefully. The root system of the locust is very delicate. The roots break off easily.

Types and varieties of Martagon

There are not many varieties of this flower, but still these specimens are worthy of attention. Crossing makes it possible to develop new hybrids, colors and find a suitable variety for each gardener, improving its general characteristics:

  • The most beautiful varieties are considered to be lilies called Maroon King, “Mr. RO Backhouse”, “Sunny morning”, as well as Canadian lilies.
  • Russian morning. The height of the stems reaches 80-110 centimeters, the flowers are medium in size. They are lowered down, and the petals are bent back and slightly curled at the ends. The color of the lily ranges from light yellow to bright orange. The flower begins to bloom in early summer and until the end of August or beginning of September. The smell is delicate, sweet.
  • "Henry". Lily comes from China. Quite a popular variety that grows in almost all gardens in the world. Thanks to the Chinese lily, it was possible to develop new varieties by crossing the plant with other oriental lilies. The height of the lily can reach up to 2.5 meters, the stems are very long and elastic. The foliage covers the stems completely and has medium-sized leaves. The hybrid tolerates frost well and rarely gets sick.

Suitable landing place

Lily Apricot Fudge

The unpretentious Martagon lily grows well mainly in the shade: under a tree, next to a bush, and in other places with a lack of sunlight. However, if you plant a lily in direct sunlight, the stems will not grow long, and the flowers will not be as bright and smaller than usual.

Important! When choosing a place for growing, you need to remember that Martagons can sit in one place for about 20 years.

Flowers love loamy soil with zero acidity. The bulbs are buried to a depth of 20-25 cm, which means that the planting hole must be deep (up to 0.5 m) and sprinkled with a specially prepared substrate.

The best time of year to plant the Martagon lily on your site begins at the end of August and ends at the beginning of September. When planting the bulb in the spring, the lily will bloom only next year. The first bulb sprouts appear on the days when the snow has just begun to melt. These leaves are still afraid of frost; at first they will need warm shelter.

Reproduction

Dividing the “nest” of bulbs. On the main bulb, in its bottom part, already in the first year, small bulbs are formed. They do not produce shoots, but with their help you can plant a lily. In autumn, the main bulb is dug up a little, small bulbs are carefully separated and planted in a pre-selected place.

Reproduction by children. Bulbs also form on the root part of the stem, sometimes called aerial bulbs. In the fall, they are separated without touching the main bulb and planted.

Reproduction by scales. Lilies are propagated by scales; this method is also simple. You can use it at any time, but it is advisable to do it in the fall or spring. The bulb is carefully dug up, the scales are separated, no more than a third, the planting material is ready and there is a lot of it. You can start planting, dig up the soil to a shallow depth, lay down scales, sprinkle them with sand or sawdust and water them daily. After a few weeks, the scale will produce a petal.

Reproduction from stem bulbs. Sometimes, lilies have small bulbs on the stem; they consist of small scaly leaves. They fall off, take root, sprout, they are collected and planted in a new place; the principle of planting is no different from planting simple bulbs. When choosing this type of flower propagation, you need to know that lilies will bloom only after two years. Among Asian hybrids there are many varieties that reproduce in this way.

Growing and propagation of locust and its hybrids

If we characterize the locust and its hybrids in general, then they are durable, winter-hardy, and slow-growing, especially the latter. The preferred planting time is early autumn. If the bulbs were purchased at a time not suitable for planting, they are sprinkled with slightly damp peat and stored in a cool place (at a temperature of +5 degrees). It’s better to plant them in a permanent place right away ; they don’t like to be transplanted, then for a year or two they grow roots, wither and don’t bloom. The whole company does not like bright sun and prefers to grow under the cover of bushes or in the light shade of deciduous trees, where it is cool and damp. These are plants for gardens in a free, rustic style, and if they have settled somewhere, they will be able to compete with their neighbors for space.

Martagons do not like bright sun and prefer to grow in partial shade. They will like light, loose, organic-rich and deeply worked soil. Regarding acidity, they disagree. If the locust itself is extremely picky, which has provided it with such a wide natural range, then the hybrids become more capricious, especially the later ones. Direct hybrids, including Backhouse, still grow on acidic soils, but complex ones, especially with the participation of Tsingtao, prefer alkaline ones, while on acidic ones they look frail, turn yellow early and get sick easily. Therefore, it is not recommended to mulch them with sawdust and peat, but preferably with leaves with the addition of ash. They plant deep, and make allowances for the “rule of three bulbs” for the high stem and stem roots, so that, in general, you get at least 20 cm. Wild locust is successfully crushed when planted very shallowly (about 5 cm deep to the top of the bulb), but it cannot bloom. There is no such information about Curly Hybrids, perhaps because no one mocked them like that. It is only said about them that they grow slowly, but if, nevertheless, a single leaf appears next to the stem - a signal of a baby - then it is planted in the fall. The method of propagation by scales, described in detail in any manual on lilies, is quite applicable.

Martagon hybrids in garden design

This class of lilies offers to decorate the garden with hardy, durable, almost maintenance-free plants. Martagons have rightfully earned the status of the easiest class of garden lilies to grow. They are planted not for a few years, but for decades. They are stable, not afraid of competition, dense planting, do not get lost, grow relatively slowly, and spend several years just developing a full-fledged root system.

Martagons are often called country lilies. They are great in country gardens, martagons are a real find for any landscape projects and imitations of wild plantings, gardens that rely on minimal care and natural areas, and are also an excellent choice for a modern garden that is looking for practical and effective solutions.

Martagons are used in groups and islands, in massifs and landscape thickets, in shady flower beds, mixborders and ridges, they are introduced into the design of water bodies and rockeries, and are used as flowering accents that enliven gloomy corners of the garden and lawns.

Martagons look great as a framing or lining plant for small architectural objects; they can be used as a camouflage plant and to soften sharp lines. These lilies are the queens of the middle ground. Even two-meter varieties look better not in the background, because elegant floating inflorescences create the effect of highlighting compositions and are most advantageous “in the thick of things,” surrounded by other ornamental plants.

Partners for martagons are selected from among the largest perennials. They are inimitable in addition to astilbe, rogersia, aquilegia, delphinium, aconite, hosta, ferns, basilisk, knotweed, volzhanka, and bluebells. Tulips, primroses and daffodils can be added to the composition as spring accents.

Flaws

  • The disadvantage of this species is that their daughter bulbs form slowly and bud poorly. As a result, planting material is expensive.
  • In autumn, tall stems that have finished flowering stick out in the middle of the plot, but you cannot cut them off, this will lead to poor flowering in the next period.
  • In the year of planting, and sometimes for young bulbs even in the second year, you will not see flowering. Luxurious flowering will delight you only in the second or third year.
  • Most varieties do not like to be replanted.

Martagon is planted in late August - early September. Due to the fact that lilies appear on sale in the spring and those who want to get different varieties have to purchase them at this time.

If there is no basement, the bulbs can be temporarily planted in glasses filled with soil to a depth of 20 cm. If the bulb sprouts ahead of time, it is planted in a pot for a while and then planted outside.

The bulbs of this species are large, so they are planted in the ground at three heights. The soil for planting is dug up with 1.5-2 shovels so that the roots get into the loose substrate.

The soil is removed from the hole, then only the top layer is returned to the hole. Apply 150 grams per square meter. mineral fertilizers, 2-3 cups of bone meal, the same amount of ash, 2 buckets of humus mixture. If the soil is acidic, add 200g of lime.

When the soil is prepared, begin preparing the bulbs. They are etched with a solution of Fundazol.

Now landing. Make a mound in the hole, place the onion on it, spreading the roots around, sprinkle the roots with soil and cover with a mixture of soil and sand selected from the hole. Flatten the plantings, add humus mixture mixed with soil on top, and spill with water.

Such careful manipulations are necessary because martagons are rarely dug up and replanted, therefore, the soil must be well prepared. To preserve nutritional properties for a long time.

There is no need to cover this species for the winter, as they tolerate frost well. You can only lightly mulch the soil to better cover it with snow. Make sure that melt water does not stagnate in the area, this can lead to rotting of the bulbs. If after reading you still have questions, you can watch a video about growing lilies.
