Rose Shrub. What is so remarkable about this variety?

What are rose scrubs

Rose scrub is a completely new representative of modern hybrids. Its origins include climbing English roses, remontant and Lambert varieties. During the selection process, the plants were tested for resistance to diseases and low temperatures down to -40 degrees. As a result, scrub rose varieties survive in the middle and northern regions of Russia without shelter for the winter. Therefore, they are mainly planted in parks and squares, as well as on private farms.

The qualities of this group distinguish it from others:

  • unpretentiousness when planting and leaving;
  • high resistance to diseases and low temperatures;
  • various methods of landscaping, both single and group plantings;
  • strong growth of some varieties, with vines up to 2 meters;
  • beautiful appearance of abundant flowering, which can last from early summer until autumn;
  • variety of shapes and colors of flowers;
  • well-developed aroma, even compared to hybrid tea varieties.

What is the difference between scrubs and park and other varieties of roses?

Shrubs are not afraid of any frost, which is why they are widespread in the northern regions of Russia, where survival is simply impossible for ordinary roses due to their heat-loving nature.

Decorative roses

The shapes of their flowers and the variety of colors of scrub roses are not inferior to their other relatives, such as park roses, floribunda, grandiflora, and hybrid tea varieties. They have no less decorative value, and have found their adherents among landscape designers who successfully decorate park areas, garden beds and other places with them.

Important! Another difference between this type and the others is that scrubs are not suitable for bouquet cutting. Their beauty should be on the bush, not in the bouquet.

Caring for scrubs is more labor-intensive and requires considerable physical effort, for example, pruning bushes and watering them. But the energy costs are completely justified: plants take root much easier and are very resistant to various types of diseases.

Rose varieties scrub

On the Internet and literature you can find photos and descriptions of the scrub rose.

Several varieties are especially interesting:

  1. "Ansent Mariner" belongs to the English representatives of the group bred by the famous botanist D. Austin. Delicate pink flowers of large size cover the bush, evenly distributed throughout it. The shrub is round in shape, low, with dense foliage. Golden stamens are visible in the middle of the double flower. Flowering occurs constantly, throughout the warm period of the year.
  2. The Annie Duprey variety represents unique English scrub roses with lemon-colored yellow flowers and a citrus aroma. This variety is not afraid of black spot or powdery mildew. It can easily survive temperatures down to -25 degrees. A compact shrub grows up to a meter in height. It is only bad for prolonged rains, due to which the buds remain closed for a long time.
  3. One of the first varieties of the shrub species “Schneewithchen” is very common . It belongs to German selection and is characterized by good resistance to pests and diseases. Branched bushes stretch up to one and a half meters. They are abundantly covered with double white flowers, 6-8 cm in diameter. Continuous flowering has been noted throughout the warm season.
  4. Red, with a bluish tint, flowers of the Manstead Wood variety have more than 70 petals in one inflorescence. They hardly get sick and are very unpretentious. They have excellent frost resistance. The bushes are compact, low, up to 1 meter. They have a unique fruity plum aroma.
  5. The new ornamental shrub “Cinderella” fits the description of the scrub rose variety, and also has features of the wattle varieties of the plant. Tall, two-meter branches can cling to any vertical planes and supports. The variety is endowed with increased survival qualities in harsh climatic conditions. At the same time, it retains the gentle appearance of its heat-loving ancestors. Double flowers are white, with a pink tint, reminiscent of peonies in petal shape and size. The rounded cups of inflorescences emit a subtle apple scent close up.

How to plant scrubs

In order for the plant to be healthy and develop well, you need to choose the right shraba rose seedling. It must be dug up without damage and stored in an earthen coma. An annual bush is the best option to buy. The bark on such a seedling should be smooth, but with woody characteristics. Drying of the roots is not allowed. If some dryness is observed, then you can keep the plant in water for no more than a day.

Planting a scrub rose requires careful choice of location. Sturdy, low-growing varieties with dark, dense leaves and fade-resistant flowers will grow well in sunny, open areas. In shady places, branched plants with soft green foliage and inflorescences that lose their brightness in the sun will feel better. Small varieties of scrub roses can be arranged in rows, keeping the distance between seedlings at least half a meter. Tall shrubs should have room to grow up to two meters between plants.

A few weeks before planting, the soil is prepared, into which compost, humus and peat are added and everything is dug up. The hole, with an average depth of 50 cm, is well watered with water and fertilizers and the straightened roots are covered with earth. Then the soil around the seedling is compacted a little and sprinkled with humus or sawdust, after which it is watered. The best time to plant roses is early autumn or late spring.

How to care for scrub roses

The variety of species, beauty and unpretentiousness of these plants have made them the main ones in the floral design of parks, squares and streets. They are suitable for single plantings on lawns, as well as for creating arches and complex compositions in a classic style. Caring for rose scrub involves the need to cover young plants for the winter, prune them, treat them with pest repellents, apply fertilizers and water them. In the fall, after the flowering period ends, the bushes are pruned and tied to supports. As a protective shelter for the winter, you can use spruce branches, craft paper or agrofibre. The plant is tightly wrapped and tied until spring.

Features of planting in the ground

It is better to buy grafted seedlings in the autumn. After purchasing, the roots must be wrapped in moss or peat and wrapped in cellophane, storing the seedlings in a cool place until spring. Alternatively, they can be buried in a box of soil. To grow shrubs, you must follow some rules.

  1. Correct landing place. Such a site is a well-lit area, not blown by winds. The southern part of the garden area is ideal. It should be planted on loamy soil with neutral characteristics. Organic fertilizers must be added to the soil. Groundwater should lie at an average depth.
  2. Soil preparation. The soil must be thoroughly cleaned of debris, weeds, and stones. A couple of weeks before planting seedlings, you need to dig up the soil. And the day before planting, you should dig holes. Add one kilogram of rotted mullein and rotted compost to each hole.
  3. Disembarkation time. This factor is influenced by the different climatic conditions in which the rose is going to be planted. For example, in the southern zones, scrubs are planted in the first half of autumn. Thus, they will have time to take root before the onset of cold weather. In temperate climate zones, roses are usually planted in the spring.
  4. Landing algorithm. The seedling must be placed in a vase with water so that its root and stem are immersed 5 cm in water. Leave the seedling in the vase for 10-20 hours.
  5. Fertilizers must be applied to the intended planting site.
  6. Then dig a hole 60 cm deep.
  7. After a while, soil should be poured into the planting hole in a heap, and then warm water, at a temperature of approximately 16-21 degrees, should be poured into it, along with a humate solution. Then seedlings are planted there, straightening their root system.
  8. You should manually fill the young plant and shake the bush at short intervals. The soil should be compacted.
  9. Finally, the bush is darkened with spruce branches for a week.

Note! If you plant scrub roses in groups, do not forget to maintain a distance of 0.5-2 meters between them. It all depends on the volume of the bush.

How to buy a Shrub rose

Amateur gardeners can buy scrub roses in nurseries, as well as online stores, with delivery or pickup. Their ease of care makes them an excellent choice for landscaping, even for beginners. Some diseases and pests still affect these roses, despite their hardiness. A preventive inspection may reveal the presence of aphids, which are removed by spraying with laundry soap diluted in water or with chemicals.

At the beginning of an infestation, aphids can simply be collected by hand. To combat powdery mildew, bushes are treated with copper sulfate in the spring, before leaves appear. For the winter, bushes up to three years of age are covered with earth, leaves or wrapped in special fiber. Regular pruning of dry and barren shoots rejuvenates plants, improves their appearance and makes them healthier. Replanting with root pruning works well on old shoots. In spring, organic soil fertilizing is needed. It is better to water less frequently, but in large quantities, adding calcium and phosphorus fertilizers to the water.

Photos of scrub roses are varied and beautiful; you can find out what it is during the breeding process. Numerous varieties are beautiful in their own way, and each graceful, prickly beauty has its own fans. All varieties are distinguished by their splendor and abundance of flowering. The breadth of choice is also due to the wide range of colors. Almost all shrub roses have a strong, pleasant scent.

Rose care

Despite the fact that scrubs are considered a fairly unpretentious plant, the shrub must be pruned, watered, fertilized, covered for the winter, etc. in a timely manner.

  1. Watering. This group of roses prefers to grow in moist soil, but it does not tolerate stagnant water. Watering should be done once every 7 days. It is important that moisture does not fall on the foliage, otherwise they may be affected by fungal diseases. If watered incorrectly, the rose sprouts will be low and there will be a small number of flowers. After watering is completed, the soil must be loosened and the bushes hilled.
  2. Fertilizer. To prevent excessive evaporation of moisture, the soil can be mulched with compost or peat. In the spring, when the first shoots appear, nitrogen is added. In summer, potassium and phosphorus are added for active flowering and growth.
  3. Trimming. It is obligatory in spring: it is worth cutting off already dry branches, as well as some of the shoots for more intensive growth. It is necessary to cut the stems with pruning shears at an angle of 45 degrees. If a diseased shoot is discovered, it should be removed down to the healthy part. In the summer, you need to remove faded buds or part of them. This is done so that the next flowers will be larger.
