Zenkor: herbicide for chemical weeding - properties and application

Fighting weeds in the garden is not easy: it is enough to miss the moment of weeding, and the weeds will occupy the entire free area. At the same time, it is imperative to remove weeds, since they not only deprive crop species of moisture and nutrients, but can also serve as a source of spread of diseases and pests. Mechanical weeding is too long and tedious a process, so experienced gardeners prefer to fight weeds with chemical means.

The herbicide Zenkor was developed specifically for removing weeds in areas with potatoes, tomatoes and some other vegetables. This is a new generation drug that quickly destroys annual and perennial grasses, but is completely harmless to human health, the environment and seedlings of cultivated plants. In this article you will find detailed characteristics of this drug, as well as instructions for preparing a working solution for spraying weeds.

  • Description and composition of the herbicide Zenkor

    The product is produced by the German chemical company Bayer. Release form: concentrated suspension or powder. In retail, the concentrate is presented in ampoules of 20 ml, in powder form (20 g), in bottles of 100 ml, canisters of 1 and 5 liters. The main active ingredient is metribuzin (600 g/l).

    Systemic herbicide is intended for weed control on various garden crops: carrots, tomatoes, potatoes. After treatment, the solution remains in the soil for another 90 days, which allows farmers to grow and harvest crops without weeding. Weeds do not develop resistance to metribuzin; the drug is effective for many years. Herbicide Zenkor Ultra is not toxic to bees and other pollinating insects. The product is suitable for use in large agricultural farms and small gardens.

    When and how to spray

    It is recommended to spray beet plantings at a temperature of +10-25°C. If the temperature regime is not observed, the drug can have a phytotoxic effect on the beets themselves: its growth will slow down, and the tips of the leaves will become brown. Such symptoms disappear after a week and will not affect the yield in any way.

    Spraying after rain or heavy dew is also not recommended, since such treatment will not be effective.

    Important! It is prohibited to resort to agrochemical treatment of plantings if the beets are in a stressed state, which is caused by unfavorable weather conditions (drought, frost). It is also contraindicated to spray the crop if the air temperature is below +10°C or above +25°C.

    age of crop and weed:

    • if 4 leaves appear on the crop and the weeds are at an early stage of growth, it is necessary to carry out a one-time spraying using 3 liters of herbicide per 200 liters of working solution;
    • in the case when 2-4 leaves appear on pest plants, it is recommended to spray in two stages, calculating 1.5 liters of agrochemical per 200 liters of working solution. The interval between the first and second treatment should be 7-14 days;
    • To get rid of weeds in the cotyledon phase, it is necessary to spray three times, with an interval of 7-14 days between each. Consumption of the drug is 1 l/200 l of working solution.

    Doses are indicated per 1 hectare of crop area! The herbicide is compatible with any other pesticides (for example, Miura, Hacker, Pilot). A two-liter dose of the drug should not be used until 4 true leaves appear on the crop.

    Important! You can begin manual work only a week after spraying with the drug. Mechanized processing can be carried out after 3 days.

    Mechanism of action of the herbicide

    Zenkor Ultra has a selective (selective) effect: it destroys weeds without harming cultivated species. The active ingredient of the chemical, metribuzin, when it comes into contact with the plant part of the weed, penetrates the stems, leaves and roots, inhibiting the process of photosynthesis. Subsequently, the growth of the parasitic grass slows down, the drug contributes to its rapid withering. This allows garden crops to grow and develop freely.

    When contacted with vegetables, the chemical does not have a negative effect on them. Zenkor Ultra has a long active phase, affecting not only the living, green part of the weed, but also the remains of its root, which eliminates the possibility of re-germination of the weed.

    Popular means

    The retail chain today offers a large selection of drugs that help fight weeds in potato fields. Among the great variety of drugs, it is still possible to single out several names that confidently compete with their fellow fighters and are sales leaders. Here are the most popular ones.

    Zenkor

    This is a fairly effective pre-emergence continuous action product, which makes weed control much easier. Its granules are highly soluble in water and kill weeds at the moment of germination. Zencor should not be used if heavy rainfall is expected over the next 2 weeks, as heavy rainfall will wash the herbicides out of the ground. But a little soft rain will only enhance the effect.

    The impact of Zenkor manifests itself within 10-15 days, depending on weather conditions: air temperature, type of soil and its humidity. The drug does not harm potatoes, but some early and mid-ripening varieties show signs of wilting. It also does not have any negative impact on subsequent plantings. The drug should be used when the potatoes have not yet sprouted, but the weeds have already appeared on the potatoes. Zenkor is a fairly effective herbicide, and in practice there have been no cases of weed resistance to the strength of its effects. It is most effective in the fight against ragweed, mustard, dandelion, and quinoa.

    Titus

    Treatment of potatoes against weeds involves the use of the drug Titus. This is a reliable protection of potatoes from weeds after germination. Titus suppresses weeds and prevents them from growing and developing. Climbing perennial and annual plants die from its influence. Weed destruction occurs through the surface of the leaves. Thanks to it, treatment with pre-emergence preparations is not required.

    Even one spraying with Titus is enough to kill weeds. Within 3 hours it spreads throughout the plant, and once in the ground, it decomposes and after 10 days loses its toxic properties.

    It is advisable to use the product on warm and humid days, but it works just as well in cloudy weather. It is very easy to use and is an excellent tank mix ingredient. Often, after insufficiently effective treatment with soil herbicides, Titus is used in addition to it. Additional processing must be done in dry weather.

    Antiweed

    The drug has collected a large number of positive reviews. It is universal and capable of destroying almost any type of weed. An area with weeds must be treated every 7-10 days. To completely destroy unwanted vegetation, it is necessary to carry out no more than 3 treatments.

    Panther

    The product is aimed at combating cereal weeds, which are not averse to taking over the potato plot. The area is treated with this drug once. The main advantage of the Panther herbicide is its resistance to rain, which appears within an hour after the end of treatment.

    Roundup Max

    The drug Roundup perfectly destroys wheatgrass and remains active in all weather conditions, from fog to drought.

    Chistopol

    This herbicide is especially active against thistle and birch, as well as wheatgrass. One treatment is enough to kill weeds. In addition, it can be used to destroy bushy plants.

    Totril 225 EC

    The product has a wide spectrum of action and successfully destroys various weeds, but it cannot be used in a greenhouse or after precipitation has fallen.

    Lapis lazuli

    An excellent drug that protects against weeds that parasitize potatoes and has a long-lasting effect on subsequently growing weeds. It is best to use “Lazurit” when the planted potatoes have already sprouted by 80%.

    By following the simple rules specified in the instructions for use of any drug of this kind, you will be able to get rid of weeds on your site without compromising your health. An area treated with a weed killer looks clean and well-groomed, and it does not require much effort or time to care for it. Gardeners wish you success in eliminating weeds and keeping your potato field clean. Good luck to you!

    What weeds does it help with?

    The drug Zenkor Ultra was created to combat annual cereal weeds and dicotyledonous plants: quinoa, nightshade, sow thistle, acorn grass and others.

    Dicotyledons have a powerful root system, which allows the plant to easily tolerate drought, frost, and sudden temperature changes. It is almost impossible to get rid of them by weeding.

    Important! Herbicide Zenkor Ultra effectively destroys dicotyledonous plants and prevents their re-germination.

    Chemistry or chopper?

    The arguments of opponents of herbicides cannot be ignored. But in large-scale agricultural technology, their supporters have a strong counter-argument: crop losses from damage to plants by mechanized weeding and the transfer of pathogens of plant diseases in the current overpopulated world are unacceptable. Not to mention the costs of unskilled labor in a global economy that jerks from crisis to crisis. There is only one way out: chemists should develop preparations that are increasingly safe and selective in relation to cultivated plants; well-trained agricultural technicians on large areas must carefully observe the consumption rates and regulations for the use of pesticides, accurately linking them to current local conditions. However, owners of small plots may also need chemical weeding. A weekend dacha is an obvious example (by the time you leave again, everything is overgrown there again), but it is not always desirable for rural residents to wield a hoe. How much area for potatoes is needed to feed a family in your area? 6, 10, 20 acres? How much time and effort will be left for other necessary household chores after manual weeding? Herbicide Zenkor, due to its high safety for this class of pesticides, allows us to solve this problem, as a result of which it is approved for use in private household plots.

    Advantages and disadvantages of the drug

    Zenkor Ultra has virtually no disadvantages, except that a small part of the product may remain in root crops of early varieties in the form of pesticides, but these substances do not pose a threat to human health. Also, the effectiveness of the drug is significantly reduced on light soils that contain less than 2% humus. On soils treated with Zenkor Ultra, melons, beets, onions, garlic, lettuces, peppers and all types of cabbage cannot be planted next season. These plants are not compatible with metribuzin.

    Advantages of the drug:

    • the ability to cultivate the field before planting root crops;
    • impact on a wide range of weeds;
    • convenient release form, ease of use;
    • no pungent chemical odor;
    • control of weed germination after treatment.

    Herbicide Zenkor Ultra even affects plant residues of weeds, preventing its re-germination.

    Early potato varieties

    Zenkor can be used on all potato varieties without exception. However, to treat plantings of early and super-early varieties, it is necessary to carefully approach the dosage of the chemical.

    completely abandon pre-emergence treatment in the case of cultivating the following varieties:

    Foliage chlorosis is one example of side effects from herbicide use.

    It is extremely rare, but there are cases of slowing down the photosynthesis of potato sprouts after watering them with a herbicide. In this case, the disease is observed in the form of mild chlorosis, the color of the leaves slows down, and the plant develops more slowly.

    Crops on light, sandy soils are most at risk.

    Preparing the soil before processing

    Zenkor Ultra against weeds is used on previously prepared soil. The active ingredient of the drug is better absorbed in loose, moist soils. The earth is dug up, large breasts are broken, then the intended crop area is watered. The soil does not need to be moistened if it rains regularly in the region. In areas with arid climates, this preparation cannot be avoided.

    Important! You cannot treat the soil with a herbicide before rain - the drug will be washed off with water, its effectiveness will be significantly reduced.

    After the soil has been prepared in this way, it is treated with Zenkor, diluted in accordance with the instructions.

    Types of Zenkor

    The drug has been used by gardeners in many countries for quite some time, its effectiveness has been widely recognized.

    A common type of chemical in the past, Zenkor WG 70, was produced in the form of granular powder.

    The dosage form is different - both products are available in the form of a powder or a liquid suspension concentrate. The latter has the following advantages compared to powder:

    • Less long process of diluting the mixture.
    • Improved solution stability.
    • Absence of any sediment in the container.

    The composition of chemicals does not differ depending on their subtype, nor does their effectiveness. Zenkor is supplied in various containers :

    • Powder packets – 20 g.
    • Bottles – up to 100 ml.
    • Tanks – up to 5 l.

    Packages of larger capacity are used for processing large farms, small ones - for household plots.

    Instructions for using the herbicide Zenkor on potatoes

    To treat crop areas with the drug, a manual sprayer or automatic sprayer is required.

    The instructions for use of the drug Zenkor on potatoes provide for its action in several stages. For the first time, crops are sprayed several days before emergence. In this case, the height of the weeds should be at least 2 cm.

    The consumption of Zenkor Ultra substance depends on the composition of the soil:

    • chernozems – 0.6 l per hectare;
    • mixed soils - 0.75 l per hectare;
    • loams - more than 1 liter per hectare.

    The drug Zenkor Ultra covers the ground with a thin film that prevents the germination of weeds.

    Important! After treating the soil with a chemical, loosening and abundant watering are not recommended in order to maintain an airtight layer.

    Potato crops are re-treated 14 days after emergence. Their height should be at least 5 cm. The consumption of Zenkor Ultra herbicide is reduced by 100-200 g, depending on the composition of the soil:

    • chernozem – 0.5 l per hectare;
    • clay soil – 0.6 l per hectare;
    • heavy soils - 0.8 l per hectare.

    Important! Exceeding the dosage of the drug specified by the manufacturer in the instructions is strictly prohibited. This can lead to negative consequences for garden crops.

    Treatment is carried out in the morning or evening in dry, windless weather. During the day, when the sun is in its active phase, spraying is not recommended.

    Method of using Zenkor in powder form (15-20 g): dissolve in 5 liters of water, and it is the dry substance that is introduced into the liquid, and not vice versa. Then the solution is thoroughly mixed, allowed to sit for half an hour, and the sprayer is filled with it. The prepared liquid chemical is used to treat the crop areas.

    Zenkor Ultra anti-weed concentrate in the form of a suspension is diluted in a ratio of 10 ml of product per 5 liters of water.

    How it works

    After the treatment of weeds, metribuzin penetrates deep into the cell membranes of plants. The herbicide enters the weed cells through the leaves and root system. The active substance delays the movement of electrons, so necessary for the full process of photosynthesis. As a result, the weeds die.

    "Zenkor" is used for soil cultivation before sowing, as well as for the destruction of weeds in the pre-emergence and post-emergence phases. The final victory over weeds is celebrated 14-20 days from the moment the site is treated. "Zenkor" successfully copes with difficult-to-eradicate cereals, as well as broad-leaved and dicotyledonous pests.

    The following herbs cannot resist the aggressive agent: bristle grass, wild radish, most types of knotweed, stinging nettle, ragweed, chickweed, Virginian bug, sow thistle, wild oat, woodlice, hairy string, meadow chamomile, black nightshade, field foxtail, common barnacle and many other herbs .

    Processing time depends on the type of plant. In some cases, the soil is sprayed shortly before planting seedlings. For other crops, double treatment is suitable (spraying of sprouted weeds is added to the pre-emergence procedure). Most often, single spraying of plants that are in the active growing season is used.

    Toxicity and safety precautions

    Herbicide Zenkor Ultra is completely safe for human health, does not harm the environment, and does not accumulate in the soil. No negative consequences were identified during the use of spray liquid. Also, no accumulation of the chemical substance was detected in potato tubers after treating the garden with Zenkor Ultra.

    To avoid individual intolerance to the chemical, it is recommended to use a respirator and protective gloves during the spraying process. You should also wear thick clothing with long sleeves and long pants. This will prevent the substance from getting on the skin and mucous membranes.

    When preparing an aqueous solution of the herbicide, plastic containers are used, in which food products and drinking water will not subsequently be stored.

    Important! You cannot treat soil with Zenkor Ultra in greenhouses, only in open areas. In a closed room there is a possibility of increased concentration of the substance.

    Herbicide Zenkor Ultra is not intended for treating beds with early varieties of potatoes. The product completely decomposes 3 months after it gets into the ground. During this period, early potato varieties ripen, which leads to the accumulation of some chemicals in the tubers.

    The solution is prepared for single use and cannot be stored. The remaining product is poured into the prepared hole and covered with earth. Such a place for disposal of chemical waste should be placed in a distant part of the garden, and access to it by children, adults and pets should be limited.

    In what cases is it better not to use

    Considering the high activity of some crops to the drug, it is advisable not to use “Zenkor” on plantings of pumpkin, cabbage, and beets; peppers also do not like this drug. Easily getting this product on the vegetative mass of onions will destroy its crops, as well as garlic and lettuce. The substance should not be used on early potato plantations. The optimal distance from the beds with these crops is 15 m. It is not recommended to use the product in windy weather conditions.

    It is advisable not to use “Zenkor” in vegetable plantings.
