Hot, semi-sharp, sweet onions - looking for differences
All hot onion varieties are early ripening. They have good shelf life, a high content of essential oils and sugars, but at the same time they are less productive. Semi-sharp onion varieties have few external scales, and the flesh is not so dense and sharp. When harvested with special equipment, such onions are often injured and quickly become unusable. Peninsular varieties are considered medium-ripening and require more time to ripen. However, they produce a higher yield than spicy varieties.
Sweet onions have a wonderful taste and are often used fresh. They produce a high yield, but it is stored for a short time. Hot and semi-sharp varieties of onions can be grown in any region. In the southern regions, during the growing season the harvest can even be obtained from seeds. And in the middle zone and northern zones - only through seedlings or by planting sets. a brief description of
The countries of Central Asia are considered the birthplace of the red vegetable. However, the cultivation and breeding of new varieties began in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden - it was there that the “Crimean” and “Yalta” species were first obtained. Today there are many varieties of onions, but red ones are considered the softest and sweetest in taste.
How do red onions grow?
Red onions grow in two parts - above ground and underground. The ground part consists of long (up to 1.5 meters) bright green feathers, which are also eaten. Red onion leaves cannot be distinguished from other varieties.
The underground part of the onion has a round, flattened shape and is painted in a bright red-violet color.
Red onions can grow in almost all climate zones. The only exceptions are subarctic ones, where the soil is frozen, and therefore onion cultivation is impossible.
What does it taste like?
The taste of red onions is characterized by the absence of characteristic bitterness. Instead, there is a soft, islandy, slightly sweet aftertaste.
How is it different from regular onions?
The red vegetable differs from ordinary onions primarily in its appearance. Onions have a golden hue, while red onions have a rich, red-violet color.
Unlike onions, red onions are less bitter, their taste is mild and slightly sweet. This is due to the large number of antacids in onions.
The antioxidant content of red vegetables also differs from onion vegetables: the former contains double the amount of substances that prevent the development of cancer.

Refers to varieties with high yield and resistance to viruses.
Important! Onion sets “Hercules” bring up to 8 kg of yield per square meter of sowing, which its relatives cannot boast of.
Planting can be done in the fall, when there is no frost yet. The optimal temperature is 10 °C. It is better not to overwater the seedling. After all, if you exceed the moisture norm, the vegetable will not be stored for a long time and will quickly rot.

Weight loss
Red onion is actively used for weight loss. It activates metabolic processes in the body, naturally speeding up metabolism. The vegetable improves overall well-being, normalizes energy consumption processes, which together leads to excess weight loss.
Those who want to lose weight are recommended to add red onions to their food (in salads, soups or as an addition to main dishes).
Facial care
For many women, facial care is not complete without adding onions. For example, it helps in the fight against age spots (see video).
For oily skin
For oily skin, use a mask of squeezed juice of 2 onions mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice. The mixture is applied to the face for 15-20 minutes and washed off with warm water, and then washed with cold water. This mask normalizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands, fights acne, having an antimicrobial effect on the causative agent of the disease, eliminates oily sheen and minor redness.
For dry skin
To nourish dry skin, prepare a mixture of a teaspoon of onion juice and cucumber juice. They are mixed and 250 ml of chilled boiled water is added. The resulting liquid is applied to a sponge and wiped over the skin of the face.
With regular treatment, the skin will become more hydrated, elastic, and the complexion will be evened out.
For wrinkles
Since red onion is a powerful antioxidant, it is used to prevent and remove fine lines and wrinkles. To do this, prepare a mixture of equal amounts of onion juice, honey, white lily juice and white wax. The mixture is heated over low heat until the ingredients dissolve, cool, apply to the face for 60 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.
Against freckles
Those who are embarrassed by freckles on their face can prepare a mask from red onions to remove them.
To do this, pour a teaspoon of calendula into 100 ml of boiling water and leave for half an hour. Then add a teaspoon of onion juice to the liquid and wipe your face with the resulting solution 3-4 times a day. This composition has a pronounced whitening effect; over time, freckles become less noticeable.

"Carmen"
This is one of the Dutch varieties of onion sets, which recently began to be imported into our country. At the same time, he is very popular. One of its advantages is the speed of ripening, which ranges from 75 to 85 days. Normally tolerates storage throughout the winter. At best, you will get up to 2.5 kg of yield per square meter.
The bulb weighs up to 80 g on average, but with proper planting, good soil and favorable conditions, it is possible to get a bulb weighing up to 120 g. The “Carmen” onion set has a bright red color and an ellipsoidal shape. Inside the color is even more saturated, dark purple. The taste is excellent:
Therefore, it is added to fresh salads. This vegetable is useful for people with low cholesterol levels for regular consumption.
Description of the variety
Red Semko is a universal early maturing hybrid of the first generation.
It is used for growing turnips as an annual crop from seeds (read about onion varieties for growing from seeds here). Unilocular, with one or two rudiments. It has not very long green feathers with a medium waxy coating.
The bulb of this variety is round, level, with a thin neck, average weight - 80-100 grams. Under favorable conditions, the mass of the bulb can reach 120 grams. It has 2-3 tightly fitting dark purple scales. The pulp is juicy, white with a dark red epidermis.
The yield, subject to all growing conditions, is 4-5 kg/sq.m. These are indicators at the level of standards of such varieties as Red Baron and Hercules F1. Experienced landowners note among the features of this onion variety excellent ripening after harvesting, consistently good yield and long-term storage (unlike most other varieties of red onions).
Important! This variety is grown from seeds. To increase their germination, it is recommended to pre-soak them
Taste qualities
This onion variety has juicy pulp with a medium-sharp, pleasant taste. It reveals well in fresh vegetable salads, various marinades and sauces. Suitable for canned products; does not lose its structure during heat treatment.
Maturation speed
Red Semko is considered an early ripening variety. The ripening period is 90-95 days from the start of germination. The ripening rate before harvesting is 70%, after ripening in storage - 100%.
Growing areas
Red Semko is able to tolerate drought and rain and does not require special care, but it does not tolerate temperature changes well and requires long or medium daylight conditions.
This variety is included in the State Register for the Central Region. Therefore, the preferred growing areas for it are:
- Central.
- Middle Volga.
- Central Black Earth.
Important! The Red Semko variety loves light, loose, predominantly clay-sandy soil. But it is better to avoid loamy and acidic soil if possible or carry out abundant fertilizing
Red onion sets
The variety is highly valued for its healing properties, contains a lot of selenium, and has an antitumor effect due to the presence of quercecin. Bulbs in a two-year culture when planted as sets have an average weight of about 150 g. They are quite dense, juicy, purple in color, and store well. The variety is mildly spicy, has excellent taste and a pleasant aroma. Productivity up to 2.5 kg per 1 m² and above.
A very early variety, ripens in a maximum of 90 days. The average weight of the bulbs is from 80 to 120 g. The yield is consistently high. The bulbs are round, slightly crushed, and at technical ripeness - red-brown in color. It has excellent taste characteristics, juicy, aromatic, white flesh with purple veins.
The upper dry scales tightly cover the body, which allows the onion to retain commercial qualities and beneficial properties for 8 months.
To choose the right variety of red onion, you need to focus on your needs and taste preferences. At the same time, remember that semi-sharp and sweet varieties can be grown as an annual crop, while spicy varieties are best planted before winter.
There are several ways to grow onions: seeds (nigella), sets, selections, seedlings. Onions are grown in one-, two-, three-year crops. In an annual crop, a marketable bulb is obtained from seeds or seedlings in one year. In a two-year crop, in the first year small onion sets are grown from seeds, and in the second year commercial bulbs are grown from the sets.

Sometimes they practice a three-year culture, using selections (underdeveloped bulbs) in the third year to obtain large turnips. Growing onions from seeds is quite a troublesome task, and yet this is a traditional method for Ukraine. Every year, many gardeners buy a bag of seeds (nigella) and grow their own planting bulbs - sets.
Due to the density of the shell, nigella is pre-soaked or stratified. For sowing nigella, choose well-lit areas. The soil should be neutral (pH 6.5-7), well-drained, clay-sandy, fertilized. Before planting, it is dug up to the depth of a spade bayonet. Nigella is sown according to the pattern 45x3-5 cm to a depth of 1 cm, the norm is 1 g of seeds per 1 m2.
After the appearance of two true leaves, the seedlings are thinned out, leaving the plants at a distance of 2-4 cm from each other. The second thinning is carried out in the phase of 4-5 leaves at a distance of 4-6 cm. Further care of the crops consists of loosening the soil, watering (during the growth period) and weeding. To avoid constant weeding, you can use a special pre-emergence herbicide Stop*, designed to control annual cereals and dicotyledonous weeds in onion beds.
Our advice
Plants in the beds are fed with mineral fertilizers (in the first half of the growing season, nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium, in the second - phosphorus-potassium).
At the end of August, before the start of the period of intense rains, the grown seedlings are harvested. The bulbs are dug up and left in the garden until the leaves dry out. Then they are removed, the sets are sorted, dried, packed in vegetable nets and stored until spring at a constant temperature of up to 15 ° C. The place for storing the sets should be dry, well ventilated, so that the onions do not dry out or become moldy.
Features of planting and growing
The culture is demanding in terms of light and humidity . The richest harvest of large bulbs ripens in sunny, well-moistened areas.
Is it possible to plant on the head before winter?
Although red onions prefer warm climates, some varieties (for example, Robin, Black Prince) are planted before winter .
Sowing time depends on the region : in the southern regions it is November, and in the northern regions it is September. Suitable ground temperature does not exceed +5°C.
Winter planting technology:
- Choose an open sunny area with well-drained soil. The earth is dug up with humus, mineral fertilizers, and ash.
- As soon as the soil settles, the area is leveled with a rake, furrows are made 6 cm deep. The distance between them is 20 cm.
- The sets are planted 8 cm apart.
- The soil is sprinkled and compacted.
- Water only after 10 days.
- As soon as frost sets in, the ground is mulched with straw.
Some gardeners plant several varieties at once to choose the one they like and prepare it for next year. This procedure will help determine the most winter-hardy onions.
Preparing for landing
Planting material is pre-soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate (pink) for 30 minutes. This will destroy pathogens. To speed up germination, the seeds are treated with a growth stimulant and placed in a canvas bag.
Soil requirements
The site for planting is chosen to be well-lit, with fertile soil (pH 7). If the soil is acidic, add dolomite flour.
Attention! The crop grows best in the place where cabbage was before.
The following fertilizers are applied for digging (per 10 liters of water):
- urea - 2 tbsp. l.;
- rotted chicken droppings - 100 g;
- manure infusion - 1 l.
Dates, scheme and rules of planting
The prepared material is planted in open ground 2 days after treatment , when constant warm weather has established (+22...+23°C) and the soil has warmed up well.
Planting depth : 1.5 cm. Pattern: 3x10 cm.
The seedlings are planted in furrows 5 cm apart . The distance between furrows is 24 cm.
Features of cultivation
In northern latitudes, early ripening varieties are cultivated . For planting, use seedlings or seedlings. These vegetables have a bitter taste.
Onions with medium ripening periods are suitable for the central strip . Seedlings are used as planting material.
In the southern climate, on fertile soil, all varieties grow . The taste of this onion is sweet or semi-sweet.
Nuances of care
Caring for red onions is standard . Watering is carried out as the top layer of soil dries, fertilizing - 2 times per season.
Advice! For long-term storage of the crop, the feathers of the plants are not trimmed.
Watering mode
Red onions are watered once every 7 days, at the rate of 5–10 liters of water per 1 m2 . At the same time, pay attention to weather conditions. If the summer is dry and the feathers begin to dry out, the frequency of irrigation is increased to 2 times a week. In rainy weather, watering is stopped.
In July, when turnips begin to ripen , the crop is moistened once every 14 days.
Watering is stopped completely 2 weeks before harvest : the vegetables are allowed to dry so that they do not rot during storage.
Loosening and weeding
Loosen the soil shallowly until the stems close together.
Weeding is carried out regularly : weeds take nutrients from plants.
Top dressing
Fertilize the crop twice per season:
- When forming bulbs, organic compounds are used. Prepare a solution of chicken manure (1:10) or liquid mullein (1:5).
- At the end of June, a composition of 10 liters of water, 60 g of superphosphate, 30 g of sodium chloride is applied to the root. The resulting volume is enough for 2 m2.
Disease and pest control
Most often, red onions are susceptible to a fungal disease - fusarium . It manifests itself as softening of the bottom of the head and death of the roots. The leaves turn yellow and the plant dies. Affected bushes cannot be treated; they are dug up and burned. For prevention, seedlings are soaked in fungicide for 30 minutes before planting.
In dry summers, plants are attacked by onion fly . She appears as soon as the dandelions begin to bloom. Insect larvae penetrate the vegetable through the bottom or base of the leaves, eating it from the inside. Tobacco is used to control the pest. It is mixed with water at the rate of 250 g per 10 liters, left for 2 days. The resulting product is sprayed onto the plants. For 1 m2 you will need 1 liter of composition.
