Dates for planting persimmons in the fall
Planting of persimmon seedlings is planned in the fall 1–1.5 months before the onset of the first frost. The tree is grown in open ground mainly in the southern regions of Russia. Here the first frosts on the soil occur in mid-December. Therefore, the main time for planting in autumn is the first ten days of November. For the middle zone and the Volga region this is mid-October.
If the autumn deadline is missed, planting can be planned for the spring - in the first half of April. In this case, the seedlings will take root more slowly, but on the other hand, they will definitely not suffer from frost. Thus, there are advantages to planting persimmons both in autumn and spring.
Variety of varieties
Today there are several hundred different types of persimmons in the world. However, they can be roughly divided into three completely different in terms of fruit size and plant frost resistance:
- Eastern – fruits 70-250 g, frost resistance -20..-24ºС;
- Virgin - fruits 35-100 g, frost resistance -30..-32ºС;
- Rossiyanka is an interspecific hybrid, fruits weigh 45..150 g, frost resistance is average, -23..-28ºС.
Planting Korolek (chocolate) persimmon is effective only in the south. This variety belongs to the oriental species, was bred in Japan and does not tolerate frosts below -22ºС. Therefore, it is not advisable to plant them in the central strip. One frosty winter night can completely kill the entire garden of these wonderful trees.
In the middle zone, the most popular planting of Rossiyanka persimmons and varieties derived from this species. They take root well and bear fruit. The fruits are sweet and medium in size. And their frost resistance is excellent for the “lower part” of the middle zone.
Closer to the north in the middle climate zone, it is preferable to plant Virginia plants. their fruits are not particularly large, but there are a lot of them
