The most productive of the winter-hardy varieties is the Striefel apple tree.

The Streifling apple tree received this name due to its German name - Streifling Herfst, which translated means Autumn Striped. In Russia, the variety is also known under other names - Starostino, Obrezkovoe, Polosatoe, Shtrifel.

The apple has a characteristic color - covered with bright red stripes. The taste is in no way inferior to the famous summer varieties, but has one remarkable feature - it is resistant to frosts exceeding -25 C. Thanks to this, the apple tree is widespread not only in the southern, but also in the temperate regions of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland. Autumn Striped is included in the Rosreestr of the Northern, Northwestern, Volga-Vyatka, Central, Middle Volga and Central Black Earth regions.

Streifling originates from the Baltic states. However, exactly when the variety was obtained and how it developed is unknown. Autumn Striped is the result of random successful pollination. There are versions that claim that the variety was obtained in Holland or Germany, and only then brought to the Baltic states. However, there is no reliable information confirming the hypothesis.

Description

Autumn striped - a creation of folk selection , appeared as a result of accidental pollination. The ancient variety is found in many old gardens of the Central Russian Plain , the Black Earth Region, central and northern Europe, and the Baltic states.

I came to Russia from the Baltic states, and there from Holland. He is known by different names:

  • Autumn Striped (folk versions Striped Autumn and Autumn Striped);
  • Streifling (other options are Striefel, Striefel and Stiefel);
  • Livlyandskoe Grafensteinskoe (or as different - Livlyandskoe and Grafensteinskoe);
  • Autumn Streifling and Striped Streifling;
  • Trimmed or Trimmed;
  • Starostino;
  • Amtmanskoe.

Streifling is a tall, powerful tree. The root system is developed, the roots are well buried.

The spreading wide crown with slightly drooping ends of the branches has the appearance of an inverted cauldron. Strong dark brown branches are located almost parallel to the ground. The shoots are pubescent and brown.

The leaves are rich green, round or broadly oval, with “felt” pubescence. Reddish petioles grow from the branches almost at right angles and form dense clusters at the ends of the shoots.

The buds are light, pink. The flowers are large, cup-shaped, white, with a pink tint.

Fruits are formed on two- to three-year-old fruit twigs and on ringlets. The shape of the apples is broadly conical, round, with pronounced ribbing at the base. Various fruits are often found. The color of the fruit is greenish-yellow or yellow, with a blush in the form of frequent bright red stripes. Under favorable conditions, the average weight of apples is 140 g.

additional characteristics

Advantages and disadvantages

Autumn striped is valued for the following qualities:

  • Unsurpassedly rich harvests;
  • Delicious aromatic fruits;
  • Transportability of fruits;
  • Durability of the tree, bearing fruit for several decades;
  • Winter hardiness, ability to self-heal after cold damage;
  • Resistance to pests and diseases, including scab;
  • Responsiveness to watering and fertilizers.

The disadvantages of the variety are:

  • Late start of economic fruiting, slow increase in yield over the years;
  • The bulkiness of the tree makes it difficult to maintain and requires a large free area;
  • Frequency of harvest in old apple trees;
  • Short shelf life after removal;
  • Some dependence of fruit quality on weather conditions;
  • Weak resistance to drought.

Tree height

Apple tree Autumn striped - tall powerful tree . In adulthood, its height reaches 8-10 meters.

Streifling apple tree 8 meters high.

Crown width

The crown is spreading, up to 8-10 meters wide.

Productivity

The first fruits in rare cases appear 4-5 years after planting, usually at 7-9 years . After this, the yield grows slowly: 10 kg are removed from a 10-year-old apple tree, economically significant yields (80 - 100 kg) appear only in the 13-15th year of life. A tree older than 25 years already produces up to 300 kg of fruit.

Interesting! In the 30s of the 20th century, Oryol experimenters recorded a record harvest of almost 430 kg.

Self-fertility

Strifel is a non-self-fertile variety; pollinating varieties are required to produce fruits.

Tasting assessment

The fruits are beautiful, large, with an elegant color. The pulp has a very light yellow tint, under the skin is pink, coarse-grained, loose, juicy, with a piquant spicy aroma. The taste is sweet and sour, with a raspberry or wine tint.

Streifling apples.

It is noted that apples grown in northern latitudes are more sour , while those grown in southern latitudes are almost freshly sweet. Professional experts and apple lovers consider the taste of Streifling to be the best among autumn apples, on a 5-point scale - 4.5.

Frost resistance

Frost resistance is high, the variety is widespread in the northern regions.

Retains fruiting even after critically frosty winters.

If freezing of shoots or wood occurs, which is possible in young trees, apple trees recover on their own in 1-2 spring-summer seasons.

Disease resistance

Autumn striped apple trees are disease resistant. Minor scab lesions are possible in cold, rainy years.

Taste qualities of the Striefel apple variety

The taste of apples is unforgettable. Tender lemon pulp is juicy, sweet and aromatic. It contains 10% sugar and no more than 1% acids. Due to the large amount of microelements, eating apples daily will have a positive effect on your health. 100 g of fruit contains 12% pectin, 130 mg of vitamin and a lot of fiber.

Benefits of Striefel apples:

  • due to their low calorie content (47 kcal per 100 g), Striefel apples are used in dietary nutrition, consumed during fasting and for weight loss;
  • pectin can reduce bad cholesterol, remove waste and toxins from the body;
  • apples have choleretic and laxative properties;
  • vitamins and microelements maintain vitality and strengthen the immune system.

When Streifling apple trees grow, they create comfort and a special, unique atmosphere in the garden. The plant has a particularly beautiful appearance at the time of fruiting - yellow-green fruits with stripes gradually forming on them delight all gardeners.

Calorie content of apples

Adherents of a healthy lifestyle note that apples are low in calories. Streifling contains 50-70 calories in each apple. The fruit size is average or slightly above average (100-180 g), but sometimes they reach 300 g. The high content of water and fiber allows the variety to be a light and tasty base for desserts.

Benefits of fruits

Despite the low calorie content, the fruits of the Streifling variety combine a lot of useful substances. Apples are rich in all known vitamins, except vitamin D, and contain potassium, calcium, magnesium, and manganese. The composition contains pectin, zinc and iodine, which corresponds to a set of elements for the full development of the body.

According to chemical indicators, 100 g of apples contains:

  • 12% pectin substances;
  • 0.57% titratable acids;
  • 10.1% sugars;
  • 8.3 mg ascorbic acid;
  • 280 mg of P-active substances.

Other Features

Apples of this variety compare favorably with others due to the unusual color of the fruit. During ripening, the apples are yellow-green in color, and subsequently bright reddish-brown stripes form on the glossy skin with a waxy coating. The taste is sweet and sour with a subtle spicy aroma, the flesh is yellowish, loose and juicy. The seeds are large, long, brown.

Reviews

For many decades, this ancient variety has been grown in gardens in the middle zone. Modern gardeners share their opinions about Autumn Striped.

Gennady. Tver region. “In our garden in the Tver region (more than 200 km north of Moscow), Striefel apple trees have been growing for 40-50 years, the trees are huge, they never get sick, they winter well. The apples are exceptionally large and tasty.”

Petr Petrovich. Bryansk region. “I live in the Bryansk region. The garden was founded in the 60s. The autumn striped apple tree (I affectionately call it the “striped apple tree”) bears fruit well, and the apples keep in the refrigerator for about a month. I noticed that in hot summers apples are very sweet. And if the season is cool - with noticeable sourness. The taste is special, crisp, and cannot be confused with anything else.”

Valentina Vasilievna. Moscow region. “Delicious apples, it’s not for nothing that our grandfathers loved Striped. Sweet and sour, juicy, with a wine flavor. The apples are large and beautiful, but it’s a pity that they don’t last long and become like cotton wool. I try to quickly process what we don’t eat. Juices, jam, marmalade - excellent! I also dry it, the aroma remains and it’s delicious. And what an extraordinary charlotte it turns out!”

Harvest and storage

Delicious apples of the Striefel variety do not have good keeping quality. Even with scrupulous observance of all conditions that extend the shelf life of apples, in December the fruits rapidly lose their quality and begin to rot.

Important! The delay in picking apples is directly related to a noticeable decrease in their ability to maintain their condition during storage.

And in order to preserve the harvest at least until December, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Start picking fruits from trees at the very beginning of September, without waiting for their final ripening.
  2. Store them in a wooden container in a dry place with a temperature no higher than +4°C and with good ventilation.
  3. During storage of fruits, it is necessary to regularly sort them, promptly removing rotten specimens.

An ancient apple variety that has managed to maintain its strong position in many European orchards for more than 200 years, in conditions of intense competition with new-fangled varieties, is capable of commanding respect for this alone. Every year, high yields of tasty and beautiful apples of the frost-resistant variety Striefel delight a wide circle of fans.

Features of planting and care

Generations of gardeners have passed down recommendations for caring for Autumn Stripers.

Landing

Deadlines

Apple trees are planted in early spring or early autumn. Gardeners note better survival rates of autumn plantings.

Technology

For the apple tree, choose a large area, protected from the winds, with well-moistened fertile soil.

The pit is prepared in advance: 1-2 weeks before planting in the fall or before the onset of winter if planting is scheduled for early spring. The size of the planting hole is about 1 m in each direction and deep. Complex mineral fertilizers, compost and rotted manure are applied.

Sprinkle the top with clean (without fertilizers) soil. A strong long stake is driven into the center; it will become a support for the young tree.

A seedling is placed on the resulting mound so that the root collar is slightly above the edge of the hole, the roots are straightened and sprinkled with clean soil. The soil is carefully compacted and the planting is watered abundantly, using 3-4 buckets of water.

In open ground

Attention! When choosing a planting site, you need to remember the wide crown of an adult tree and take care of sufficient living space for the apple tree.

The Autumn Striped apple tree variety does not tolerate drought. Therefore, it is important to maintain sufficient soil moisture and the soil must be well drained. Too dry air is also undesirable. To retain moisture and structure the soil, a layer of mulch is formed around the trunk.

Features of cultivation

When growing a Streifling apple tree you should:

  • Provide good moisture, regular and abundant watering;
  • Plant apple trees on the site - pollinators;
  • Periodically apply mineral and organic fertilizers.

Important! The variety is responsive to fertilizing and moisture, and responds with an increase in the number of large, tasty fruits.

Agricultural technology

agricultural practices :

  • Watering,
  • Loosening,
  • Feeding,
  • pruning,
  • Prevention and treatment of diseases,
  • Pest control.

Autumn stripers do not require special care. The main conditions are abundant regular watering and fertilization.

are preferred :

  • Manure,
  • Compost,
  • Mulching,
  • Sowing green manure in the tree trunk circle.

Pruning and crown formation

Gardeners believe that the young Autumn Striped apple tree has no extra branches. From the first years of a tree’s life, it is recommended to remove shoots growing inside the crown, down from the main branches or parallel to the trunk. also need to trim broken, weak, dry, damaged branches.

Starting from 5-7 years, thickening shoots are removed. Formative and sanitary pruning is carried out in early spring before the buds swell.

When the yield of very old apple trees decreases, rejuvenating pruning is carried out. To do this, the crown is conventionally divided into several parts and heavily pruned in stages over a period of 5-8 years.

Pollinator varieties

The best pollinators of the Autumn Striped variety are recognized as:

  • Welsey;
  • Slav;
  • Antonovka;
  • Rossoshansky striped;
  • Padding.

Welsey.

Slav.

Antonovka.

The number of pollinator trees should be at least a third of the number of Striefel apple trees.

Vaccine compatibility

Professional gardeners consider the Autumn Striped variety to be the most compatible in grafting with most cultivated and semi-cultivated varieties. Some experts are confident that the best rootstock for Streifling itself is a rootstock of the same variety grown from seeds.

Reproduction methods

Autumn striped is propagated by:

  • Sowing seeds;
  • Seedlings with grafting, including on a seedling rootstock of the same variety;
  • Lateral layering.

Winter storage

For long-term storage, apples of the “Autumn Striped” variety are picked from the tree by hand, without removing the stems.

They are carefully placed in boxes; you can use wooden or plastic with good ventilation, or boxes made of thick cardboard. It is best to wrap each apple in paper or lay them in layers, shifting each “floor” with paper.

During storage, sudden changes in temperature should not be allowed.

In the cellar or other place where apples are stored, the temperature should be kept around zero. It is permissible to store fruits at home: in cool rooms or pantries.

Features of ripening and fruiting

The variety is characterized by some features of ripening and fruiting.

Beginning of fruiting

With proper intensive care, the first fruits can appear 5-6 years after planting the tree; such results are obtained in nurseries and experimental stations. The standard period for entering fruiting is 7-9 years of age.

Fruiting of the Autumn striped apple tree.

Flowering period

It blooms in mid-May , the exact timing depends on the characteristics of the region.

Deadlines

Fruit ripening

Depending on the region of growth, harvesting maturity occurs in the first half or mid-September.

Attention! It is important to pick apples on time: if harvested too early, the taste of the fruit will suffer, and if harvested too late, the shelf life will be affected.

Fruit storage

The fruits are stored in a dark, cool room at a temperature of 1-5 degrees . In favorable conditions, they retain their taste and commercial properties for up to 100 days (until mid-December).

Streifling apples are stored in a cool, dark place.

Apple tree Autumn striped on a dwarf rootstock

By grafting Striefel onto a dwarf rootstock, the following qualities of the variety are improved:

  • The waiting time for the first harvest is reduced, the fruits are harvested already 3-4 years after planting;
  • The height of the tree is reduced, making it easier to care for;
  • The growth of the crown in height is reduced; it is only necessary to limit it in diameter;
  • Young shoots are less susceptible to overhead frosts.

Streifling apple tree on a dwarf rootstock.

In this case, you need to be prepared for the deterioration of other properties:

  • The root system of a dwarf rootstock is less winter-hardy;
  • Careful adherence to soil moisture regime is required, because the roots are located in the upper layers and dry out faster, and Autumn Striped does not tolerate drought;
  • The lifespan of the apple tree is reduced.

How to correctly: Striefel or Streifling apple variety

Streifling is a variety that has been proven over the years, widespread in the Central region of Russia and a number of former Soviet republics.
It was brought from the Baltic states. The variety was obtained without the participation of artificial selection using pollination. Included in the State Register of the Northern, Northwestern, Central, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth and Middle Volga regions. The Streifling apple tree variety has been loved by gardeners for decades, not only for its unusual color. The advantages of the variety are:

  • good yield (record recorded harvest - 429 kg per tree);
  • excellent taste;
  • suitability for consumption both fresh and processed;
  • smooth and even surface of the fruit, favorable presentation;
  • high frost resistance;
  • Slightly affected by scab and codling moth.

The disadvantages of the Streifling variety include the following qualities:

  • relatively late start of apple ripening;
  • frequency of fruiting;
  • relatively short shelf life of fruits;
  • poor drought resistance.

The most common variety is Streifling yellow, but there is a variety of these apple trees whose fruits are distinguished by a pronounced red color - Streifling red. In addition, gardeners grow Streifling on a dwarf rootstock.

Yellow

Streifling yellow when ripe has greenish-yellow fruits with wide red stripes. In November, by the time of full ripening, while in storage, the stripes of apples become brown, and the fruits themselves acquire a rich yellow color.

Apples of this variety are used fresh and are a good raw material for making juices.

Red

Gardeners know a variety called Streifling red. It is no different from Streifling yellow, except for the dark red color of the fruit. It is worth noting that apples reach a rich color by the time they are picked.

Streifling red is distinguished by the red color of the fruit

Some gardeners, in order to simplify their apple tree care, grow Streifling on a dwarf rootstock. The advantages of this method include the fact that it is only necessary to form the crown in width, since the dwarf rootstock will inhibit the growth of the tree by half. This grafting improves the winter hardiness of the plant, bringing the frost indicators to almost zero. But the biggest advantage is the earlier period of entry into fruiting than for apple trees on a seed rootstock - in the 3rd year.

Low trees are easier to care for and harvest

The Streifling variety has many advantages: winter hardiness, high yield, beautiful appearance and pleasant spicy taste of the fruit. With the help of pruning, you can give the apple tree the desired shape, and by feeding and watering on time, in return for your efforts you will receive more than one centner of tender and juicy striped apples.

The taste of Striefel apples has been known since childhood. But few people know that juicy apples were first grown in Germany, where they acquired the name Streifling, which translated means Autumn Striped. Over time, the variety became known in the Baltic countries, from where it spread throughout all post-Soviet countries. In the Soviet Union, the Streifling apple tree is called differently: Striped, Striefel, Starastino, Obrezkovoe.

Growing in regions

Autumn striped is zoned for most regions of the European part of Russia, including the Moscow region and the Leningrad region . The climate is most suitable for growing this variety of apple trees. The natural conditions of the Leningrad region are close to those of the Baltic region, where Streifling comes from.

In Siberia, the climate is sharply continental, and significant weather changes occur. However, even here they grow winter-hardy, wind-resistant Autumn striped , paying special attention to timely watering.

Advantages and disadvantages

It is worth highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of this variety. Let's look at the benefits first:

  • The tree survives frosts without problems, even very severe ones.
  • The fruits are attractive and have a pleasant taste.
  • Trees quickly get used to new conditions, due to which they can be planted in almost any region.

The disadvantages are:

  • Low yield - no more than 150 kilograms per tree.
  • Fruiting begins no earlier than 7 years from the moment of planting, and stable fruiting is established by the 10th year.
  • If the fruits fall from the branches, they will be severely damaged and become unsuitable for consumption due to their fragility.
